...a hawkish middle-aged woman and a young boy in a worn ebony robe hurried along with the crowd, snaking their way through as best the could amongst the trollies and a sea of first year students. the boy's golden eyes glistened with excitement, glancing ever which way to take in the majesty of the train station. almost completely isolated within the walls of godric's hollow, the boy hadn't seen a sea of people this massive before. instead of fear instilled by the crowd, curiosity consumed his thoughts as he was dragged along by the hand through the station.
"hold still, marcello! you look like you've been attacked by a pack of imps. your mother would roll in her grave if she knew i sent you off looking like a vagabond. i still don't understand why you refuse to wear the robes i just bought for you. that robe you're wearing is barely being held together by a thread, i wouldn't be surprised if the wind snatches it up!" the woman beside the boy, now introduced as marcello, hissed in a stern voice as she fruitlessly tried to tame the messy mop of hair upon marcello's head.
it looked rather comical to see the woman standing on her toes, furiously fussing over a boy who stood almost there inches taller than her. marcello humored her, for he knew that his aunt was genuine in her affections, even if she had a peculiar way of showing it. the two bickered back and forth often, mostly due to marcello's stubborn attitude and habit of getting into more trouble than he could handle. the boy looked for any sign of annoyance in his aunt's pale grey eyes, yet he found nothing but concern and a hint of pride that managed to show through. suddenly, a sharp whistle from the hogwart's express sounded, interrupting his aunt's preening
"they were da's robes. besides, ma taught me how to sew. i promise i'll use the robes you got me once i reach hogwarts. i'll owl you every week, just don't send me any howlers if i forget." marcello explained, motioning towards the once-elegant robe he wore, as he escaped his aunt's grasp and clutched the handles of his trolley. the two shared a brisk hug and marcello was hurriedly sent along his way up the metal steps into the interior of the train.
marcello was thankful for the drop in noise level in the train compared to the bustling train station. the quiet atmosphere would allow him time to mull over the paradigm shift in his life. the young boy, along with several other students, filtered into the main cabin of the train. he peered inside one compartment, admiring the plush velvet seats and the beautiful view from the window framed with scarlet curtains. not wanting to interject himself in someone else's compartment, marcello found himself a quiet little space in the middle row. the boy tossed his bag on the floor and plopped himself down on the velvet seat, a content sigh passing through his lips.

How she had managed to wake up at 5 a.m. and still be late, Mira did not know. Maybe it had to do with the fact that it seemed impossible for her and her parents to be on time anywhere, but the reason for their tardiness didn’t really matter. It didn’t change the fact that she still found herself running across the station, hand clutched in her mother’s, while her father dragged her trunk behind him. They paused shortly before the passage-way between King’s Cross Station and Platform 9 ¾, both her parents trying to catch their breath, but the excitement of the adventures that lay ahead of Mira got the best of her and with an impatient pull on her mother’s arm, she started hurrying towards the brick wall, her dad close behind them. When she saw the Hogwarts Express, Mira grinned broadly. This was it, the beginning of her new adventure.
Before she could even turn around, her mother had pulled her into a tight hug which made the breath she had leave her body quickly. ”All right, all right, let’s not suffocate her before she even gets on the train,’’ her dad laughed. As Mira made to turn around to him, she was already pulled back into another hug by her mother. ”I’ll just miss you so much,” she said and Mira noticed a slight crack in her voice, indicating that her mother was starting to work up tears.
The last thing Mira needed today was her parents making a scene as she left for the beginning of some of the greatest years in her life. ”Mom,” she moaned, ”calm down. You’ll see me at Christmas and I’ll send you guys owls all the time. Besides, we’re already late and I really want to get on the train,” Mira continued, unable to hide the excitement from her voice. Finally, her mother let her go, but now she was faced with another problem: saying goodbye to her dad. Although she loved her parents more than anything in the world, she was just too excited to get on the train. Still, she let her dad hug her tightly and ruffle up her hair in an affectionate manner. “Don’t get into too much trouble alright,” he told her, although not completely convincing. They both liked their fair share of trouble and if there was any trouble at Hogwarts, all three of them knew that Mira was more than likely to have been involved. ”I’ll try, but you always taught me not to make promises I can’t keep,” she grinned, but at the sight of her parents exchanging nervous glances at her words, she became a little more serious. ”Don’t worry, I’ll try to stay out of trouble. I love you guys,” and with that (and one final, very, very bear-like hug from both her parents), she hurried onto the train.
On the train she encountered another problem. Since she had been running so late, most compartments were already taken up by other students and all of them seemed to be in groups already. Suddenly, Mira felt a first wave of nerves coming up as she realized that she was all alone now. It was just her, no one to help her out. She had to do it all by herself and as that realization hit her for the first time, the excitement she felt dwindled slightly. What if it would be like this for the rest of her year at Hogwarts? Of course, this was not a realistic fear, as fears of eleven year-olds most often aren’t. Yet, the possibility of her making absolutely no friends during her first year of Hogwarts seemed very plausible to her. She wasn't a shy child at all and never found it hard to speak up, but walking into this completely new part of her life, she couldn't help but feel slightly scared. When she finally did stumble upon a compartment with only one student in it, she was quick to open the doors to it. The boy already in it seemed alright and at least he was sitting alone. Perhaps, she hoped, they could be sitting together, less alone. ”Hey,” she began, not completely able to hide the tremble in her voice, ”is it okay if I sit here? Everywhere else is full of people.”
