Brielle smiled as she entered the Owlery. Maybe it was the distinct aroma of the room, the smell of fresh envelopes and glossy wax seals. Or perhaps it was the fact that she would be opening a lovely letter from her mother in just a few seconds from then. Whatever it was, it filled Brielle with a sense of happiness. As she entered the room, it was a small simple space with a wooden desk in the very back. There were small cubby holes lined all up and down the walls, some owls resting inside of them. Dimly lit candles stood on their mounts as the hot wax dripped to the floor, leaving a dried puddle that no one will ever bother to clean up.
She approached one of the holes slowly, her finger running up and down the wall as she searched for the letter G. As she found her stack, she skimmed through the papers quickly, anxious to open the letter from her mother. Once her hands had held the last letter in the stack, her face fell at the realization that it wasn't hers.
Had it been placed in the wrong spot? God knows these owls aren't the brightest. She wondered as she frantically searched other mailboxes for what was meant to be hers. As the desperate girl's eyes read each name in search of her own, she sighed as she registered the fact that it hadn't arrived.
Her mother couldn't have forgotten to write, could she? Brielle asked herself as she made her way to the dusty table, taking a seat in the old chair behind it. She didn't know if she was angry or upset.. maybe she was both. Upset that her only communication with her mother had been ruined, and angry that she was probably at home forgetting all about it.
She placed her arms on the desk delicately and buried her head into them. What a fantastic day ruined.
