Rewriting the Future

Kerry took a deep breath as he walked into the library and looked around. It was absolutely beautiful and he had been looking forward to this room since he was old enough to read. Back home, he had spent hours in his father's library reading wizarding books and taking notes from them. He had always thought they were fiction and fantasy until the day that his father had explained his ability to set things on fire when he was angry... it was because he was a wizard too! He then started to take the books even more seriously and read them in preparation for receiving his letter to Hogwarts.

What he had not expected was for the sorting hat to call out "Hufflepuff!" He had been preparing for a live of blue.... where he was an Eagle and would rise with the other Eagles in Ravenclaw. He had packed blue clothes, wrapped a blue scarf around his owl Newt, and even read up on everything Ravenclaw. How had this happened? Had the sorting hat made a mistake?

The first few weeks had been spent trying to come to grips with his new reality. He had been ill-prepared for this. Classes were going fine, but he needed to read more. So, he found himself in the library this winter afternoon, in from the snow that was falling outside in the middle of November. He reached for a book from the shelf and went to find a cozy chair to curl up in. "The Legend of the Hufflepuff". He hoped that the house wasn't as strange as the name sounded...

Aurelia was looking for a place to just sit down and read but it seemed the only place she really could was the library and so she headed up from the dungeons to ground floor and into the Library. She pushed the big doors in, sucked in her favourite scent, the parchment and old books and continued further in.

As she fixed her cloak she headed down one of the aisles, just to check if there were any new books in the library, or even any books to do with Potions. She shrugged not finding anything and chose to go and find a seat to read her book.

Upon finally reaching a cosy area she spotted a boy, around the same age as her, he was reading a book about Hufflepuff, it was a little curious given the fact that he was a hufflepuff. She analysed him some more, she noticed his features and his long hair, he was easy on the eyes you could say.

She shrugged her shoulders and sat down on a comfy chair close by and opened her book. It was a book of first year potions and honestly she knew this book from cover to cover, but it didn't stop her reading up on the potions that it contained, she hoped to memorize all the ingredients.

Kerry sat on his cushioned chair and opened up the first book on his pile of books. He started to read, “A hufflepuff is known for being patient, fair, hard-working and nice. There is even a Hufflepuff Pride day. Sometimes, it is seen as a miscellaneous category, like a ‘catchall’, somewhere to put something that they have no place for. It is also someone who may be not particularly memorable with no notable characteristics.

Stopping, Kerry sighed and leaned back. “Well that’s just great,” he said to himself, not liking the image that was forming in his head. “There’s gotta be more to this story…” He then looked up when he saw a girl about his age. He felt himself being watched and as the girl went to sit down in a chair close by, he saw that she was reading up on potions.

“In for some light reading?” he teased as he held his hand on the spot where he’d been reading. "I hope it's better than what I'm reading, cos this stuff is downright depressing, right here." He sighs and looks over at her. She was cute, with her long brown hair and those eyes that were filled of interest and curiosity. He wondered what house she was in.

Peering over the edge of her book she couldn't help but smirk, "I wouldn't really call it light reading as I have read this book cover to cover, however I am reading with the goal of memorising potion ingredients and such so I rarely forget when it comes to applying my knowledge in class." Usually you wouldn't be able to shake her from her reading, however she wasn't fully immersed and she was pretty much hoping this boy would approach her or even message her.

Aurelia gently laid her book down on her legs and she focussed her full attention on the boy in front of her, he looked like he deserved it. "Downright depressing you say? I take it you're a hufflepuff and you're learning about your house then?" She asked with a smile.

"I am a Slytherin myself, but by the way your speaking and by the way you look, I assume Hufflepuff is not the house you wanted to be in." Her tone was soft and her smile was wide, she was good at analysing people and what they were feeling, she liked to think of herself as an empath of sorts. "Wanna tell me what house you actually wanted to be in?" The question was sincere and she was eager to know the answer.

Kerry blinked at her, impressed. “You’re going to memorize that entire book? All of the potions and ingredients and steps? That’s impressive…” He sighed a bit and looked from her to the book. “Listen to this… ‘Sometimes, it is seen as a miscellaneous category, like a ‘catchall’, somewhere to put something that they have no place for. It is also someone who may be not particularly memorable with no notable characteristics.’ I mean…” He looked up at her. “How can anyone be proud to be in THAT kind of a house?? There has to be more to this story.”

He ran a hand through his long black, wavy hair and looked over at her. “I thought I was gonna be a Ravenclaw, like every other wizard in my family. I just know the second I get home, they’re gonna tease me about wearing yellow all the time and being a sissy nobody that no one wants.” He was seriously taking the reading too much to heart, but he was struggling with this new identity.

“What am I supposed to do?” He looked through the book a bit more and said, “Listen to this… ‘The traits of a Hufflepuff are Diligence, Dedication, Fairness, Patience, Kindness, Tolerance, Modesty, and Loyalty.’” He stopped then and looked back at the girl. “Okay, well that sounds a little better,” he admitted sheepishly.

Smiling she closed her book, "Honestly I have a very good memory and so memorizing so many things shouldn't be too hard for me." She explained as she placed her book into the cloak pocket she had sewn in. She looked back over to him, "I completely understand why you would feel low about being in Hufflepuff especially with such a description as that.." She stepped out of her comfort zone again and placed her hand on the other students shoulder, "But!" She started, "That should not define how you feel you are as a person. While my entire family have indeed been in Slytherin, I'm not anything like them."

Removing her hand she listened to the next traits and smiled softly, "That's another good thing, and also, I've heard that Hufflepuffs are insanely loyal, and that's a trait to be proud of." She gave him a warm smile and realised she hadn't even introduced herself, "I am Aurelia by the way... Aurelia Blake. Its a pleasure to meet you..." She trailed off waiting for him to give his name. Once he gave his name she held out her hand to shake his, "Try not to let your house define you too much, even though its not where you wanted to be, it could be key to where you go and who you become."

Kerry smiled at the girl, growing more and more impressed by her. “Well, that must come in handy… I wish I could memorize things that easily.” He himself had always struggled with memorizing things, especially names and dates of history. “Maybe I could borrow you to study with sometime… I have a feeling that you would be able to help me a lot.”

He then looked over at the girl and tilted his head. “You’re not excited about being a Slytherin either? What is your family like then, if you’re not like them at all…?” he asked, suddenly curious. Maybe the hat did make mistakes once in a while.

He listened to her as she told him what she knew about the Hufflepuffs and nodded softly. “Yeah, that definitely makes sense… I never wanna see anything happen to those that I care about. If anyone hurts my little sister….” He shook his head at the thought. “She’s eight… I would defend her like crazy, you know?”

Then she said her name and he smiled. “Aurelia… that’s a very pretty name,” he said honestly. “I’m Kerry. Kerry Byrne,” he introduced himself. His voice held that thick Irish accent that he was known for. She was right in her wisdom. “Yeah, you’re right. I am just… trying to embrace it now, you know? There’s nothin’ I can do about it so I might as well accept it. And hope my family won’t tease me too much for it when I go home.”

She listened as he spoke and smiled softly, "I'd love to assist in studying, just let me know when you need help and I'll be there. You can owl me pretty much any time if you don't see me around first." She held her hand out for his Hufflepuff book, "May I?" She asked.

Whilst waiting for him to let her look through the book she took a deep shaky breath at his next question, "God I hope you judge me for this..." She started "My family are all dark wizards or previous death eaters, in fact my parents are currently in Azkaban for crimes against muggles, muggleborns and half bloods." She looked down and sighed, "I'm nothing like them because I don't want to be, the things they've done, the prejudices they have, I could never be anything like that.." She explained before looking back up at him. She scanned his expression, trying to see if she could tell how he was feeling but for once she couldn't read his expression.

Aurelia nodded as Kerry spoke and smiled, "I have a sister to! She's 9, she relies on the only member of our family who didn't step down the dark side, she's 7 years older than me, she just recently finished Hogwarts and she was also a Slytherin." She explained. "I understand that you wanna protect her, I am the same with Naila my little sister."

Aurelia felt the heat raise to her cheeks when he told her that her name was beautiful, she finally noticed his strong accent, "Oh are you from Ireland?" She asked. "I really like your name by the way, its unique and fits you. Also, I'm sure they won't tease you that bad its not like you could have predicted that you'd end up in Hufflepuff so maybe they will take it easy on you."

Kerry smiled as he looked at Aurelia and said, “Thanks, I appreciate that. We’ll be study partners…” He nods, handing the book towards her as he feels his thumb brush against her fingers briefly. Electricity shocked through his arm as he blinked, looking from his hand to her. Well that was new. “Did you feel that?” he asked nervously.

“I won’t judge you… we all have a story for how we got to where we are. Sometimes we can’t control the past.” He listens then as she talks about her family. He frowns, hearing that her parents were in Azkaban for crimes that they had done against muggles and half-bloods. He cringes a bit, but doesn’t fear her because of this. He set the book aside and took her hand in his. “Auri…. If I can call you that… I won’t judge you for what your parents did. I can already tel you’re different.”

He squeezed her hand gently as she talks about her little sister and smiled a bit. “Maybe our sisters will get to come to Hogwarts together and be good friends like I hope we will be…” He blushed as she said that she liked his name and he strokes her hand with his thumb, then leaned back. “What did you want to look up in the book?” he asked, changing the subject back to the discussion at hand.

Aurelia also felt the sensation and blinked, a little confused as to what exactly that sensation really was. "Y-Yeah I felt it... What was that?" She carefully took the book and placed it on her lap, thumbing through the pages, hiding the blush on her cheeks from the sensation that just occured.

Hearing that he wouldn't judge her made it all that much easier when it came to confessing the truth about her past and her family, he watched as he moved the book out of her lap and she smiled softly as he took her hand, "You can call me that I don't mind." She listened as he spoke and nodded her head in acknowledgement, "I am really happy you think that way as I am not usually welcomed and as such I don't really have any friends here at Hogwarts yet." She admitted as she uncomfortably rubbed her neck with her free hand, a little ashamed to admit that she had no friends.

Feeling him squeeze her hand caused her heartbeat to race slightly, what was this feeling? She had never felt something like this and she most definitely didn't understand it at all, "I hope we can be friends to." She admitted in a softer tone than normal. "I'm sure my sister will have a much easier time making friends than me she's just that kind of person." She said, she then leaned back into the comfy seat and looked over at him again once she was comfortable, "I just wanted to see if there was anything in there that would make you feel better about being a Hufflepuff but it seems to be quite the depressing book." She laughed softly.
