Away We Go
People rushing back and forth. Tears being shed and laughter being shared. Luggage being dropped, boots shuffling along the stone walkway alongside the train as smoke billowed above the mass of people hoping to get in the last goodbyes before sending their loves ones on their way to Hogwarts.ʙᴀᴄᴋᴅᴀᴛᴇᴅ : ꜱᴇᴘᴛᴇᴍʙᴇʀ 1ꜱᴛ 2019
What a sight.
It made John sick.
Not just homesick, but a weird jealous feeling he was not keen on experiencing.
John's family had already said their goodbyes last week before setting off to Germany once more, leaving the boy in Wales to prepare for his journey to the Platform and then to the wondrous castle where he would be living off and on for the next seven years. At least he hoped. Gripping his trunk tighter and continuing down the long line of other families, the boy strode head held high towards a less occupied spot in order to collect himself before boarding the train.
"Pardon me." Weaving in and out of people he made sure to give smiles and apologies when needed. It was the proper thing to do of course, although his traditional Pureblood upbringing still made him cringe internally at rubbing elbows with rowdy Muggleborn children. His well polished shoes blacked against the stones as he finally made his way up to one of the doorways. Not bothering to give a glance back as his babysitter Hilde was most likely watching his every move so she could successfully report back to his father. There was absolutely no way John would let word get back to his father about possibly being nervous boarding, possibly seeing tear in the boy's vibrant green eyes. It would be a sign of weakness. Not acceptable.
Offering a nod to one of the attendants waiting at the door who waved the boy in with one hand, John gave a well practiced smile. Hopefully there would be a quiet cabin for him to sit in and have some privacy before entering into a world of shared space... shared dorms... shared bathrooms... A shiver ran along the boy's spine. 'Fantastic...' Sliding his way inbetween a couple of others who appeared to be first years, giggling girls, John finally found a compartment to sit in.
Alone. How odd.... It almost made him feel sick once more.
He stood staring into the space for a quick minute... taking in the last couple days, the whirlwind of shopping and excitement from his family. Parties they had held to celebrate and show him off.. making him all the more anxious.
Now that he was alone. Away from all the noise. All the eyes on him... It almost felt too empty.
Entering to small space, John slammed the door behind him and took a seat, his trunk occupying the rest of the seat next to him, eyes glaring out of the window waiting for the train to finally leave the station.

Cormac was really late. For some reason, his father had insisted on using Muggle transport to get to the station, and by the time they finally arrived at the platform, every kid was already on board. He managed to climb in just before the train started moving.
As he made his way through the wagon, he noticed some of his friends already sitting in packed compartments. He cursed Muggle transport once again and carried on with his search for a spot to sit down.
Just at the end of the corridor, he found a compartment with only one kid inside. The boy had some very smart clothes on and his blond hair was nicely combed. If they were to sit side by side, Cormac thought his battered trainers would look kind of ridiculous next to the kid's shiny black shoes. He had never minded much about his appearance, mainly because the people he grew up with didn't care much either.
Wherever the blonde boy came from, they surely worried about it.
As he reached out for the door handle, the trolley lady tapped him on the shoulder. ‘Sweets?’ she asked. Cormac pulled out some coins from his pocket and chose a variety of lollipops and beans and chocolate. Then, he proceeded to enter the compartment.
“Hello, I'm Cormac,” he introduced himself, “Can I sit here? I've got sweets.”

"Maman, please," Bast groaned as his mother made another desperate attempt to smooth down his dark, wild curls. He didn't know why she even bothered: she had raised him for eleven whole years, and never once had his messy hair cooperated with her whims. The curls — her own fault, for dedicating them to his gene pool! — were just too stubborn to fall in line with her aims of making him look like a nice, neat, presentable gentleman. She would just have to settle for straightening out his cloak and brushing imaginary lint off his shoulders for the fifth time (which she did, promptly).
"It's fine," he protested, ducking out from under his mum's questing fingers and turning his attention to his younger sister instead. Vi was just a few inches shorter than him, a tall girl herself, and her pale blue eyes and dark hair were a perfect match for his own. He pulled her into a quick hug, ruffled her hair swiftly (somehow she got the cooperative straight tresses), and took off for the train before either of them could drag him back. "Bye, I'll Owl!"
Diving onto the Hogwarts Express, Bast took a moment to straight out his posture and relax his shoulders. He loved his family, he did, but he was just about ready to get away from them; fleeing to the train was a bit undignified (his mum was probably having a fit on the platform) but necessary in this case. After checking quickly over his shoulder to make sure Vi wasn't charging after him for revenge, he strode down the way evenly, glancing into compartments as he went. Several of them were already far too loud for his taste — Gryffindors, probably — so he kept moving until he found a relatively unoccupied one with two younger looking students. From their missing ties and colors, he was betting they were first years, too.
"Hey," he said mildly, pale blue stare flickering from one boy to the other briefly. The distinction between the two was almost laughable, but despite the fact that Bast looked pretty posh himself, he had no interest in flaunting about like some poncy git in front of these boys. Other purebloods might feel the need to posture, but he did not. "Mind if I sit? It's quieter back here."
Although he was polite enough in asking, Bast didn't seem inclined to actually wait for an answer before swinging his trunk up into the rack above. What kind of arse would refuse, anyway? Dipping a nod to both boys, he added as an after thought, "I'm Bast. You alright?"note for americans: "you alright?" is the equivalent to "how are you?"

Angela was looking out the window as they drove to the train station, she had recently gotten accepted into Hogwarts and her parents were just as excited as her. As they got out of the car her parents walked her to the 9 3/4 platform "Go on honey, just run into it" Her dad Oliver had told her with a huge smile, his dark brown eyes shone with excitement but they were almost unseeable due to his chubby cheeks and brown shaggy hair covering them.
"Run into a wall?? I hope I don't get hurt, or fall" She thought and shook her head as she backed up with her trolley, closed her eyes and went running into the wall, she opened her eyes and looked around, there was a lot of people there. Soon after she went through the wall came her two brothers, Mike and Pete, and her mum and dad. "All ABOARD!" The conductor yelled out, kids could be seen boarding on but Angela looked at her family, her brothers were messing with each other and her parents were trying not to cry. She smiled and hugged them "I'll...um...Owl you?" She said questionably since she wasn't very familiar with how things worked there.
"I'm going to miss you so much!" Her mother Sky had tears in her eyes and held her tightly, she had the most beautiful green, emerald eyes and she had long brown hair as well. There was no telling where she got her dirty blonde hair from since neither her parents nor brothers had blonde hair and she clearly took after her father in the eyes division of her DNA. Her brothers looked at her and hugged her both, which was fairly unexpected, but she hugged them back and moved away. "I have to go but I will Owl you. Bye, mum and dad!" She yelled and rushed off onto the train before they could hug her again.
She walked through the train and looked for an open compartment and found a rather empty one with only two boys in there, she opened the door and looked at them "Um hello, mind if I join you, the other compartments are quite full" Her voice was soft and she was holding her trunk, completely understanding if they rejected her request to join they. She waited for a reply and scooted inside a bit more so the candy trolley could get by, "Sweets, ma'am?" She asked with a kind smile, Angela took a few bits from her pockets and got some chocolate as she returned a smile back to the lady and moved along

Away We Go
The trip to the train station was decent, even though it had definitely not been by her standards. Lauren had wanted to bring her father along, or at least her brother, but unfortunately because of dumb muggles-wizard communication laws they simply couldn't there to see her off to Platform 9¾.
She was stuck with her stepmother, who kept going on and on and on about the wizarding community, like she was the one who could use magic and not Lauren.
“...the goblins of Gringotts are most irksome when it comes to issues in the bank, so if I hear of any nonsense concerning the little amount of money I've placed in your safe...”
The woman clearly enjoyed talking people's ear off, especially Lauren's. The young girl clenched her teeth as she glared out the car's window, counting to ten for the one hundredth time.
By the time they reached the station, it was more crowded than usual. As she understood, wizards has numerous ways to travel around, so she didn't understand why this place more busy than usual. Lauren and her stepmother grabbed her luggage and carried them into the station. She didn't bring much, she wasn't sure what the fashion was like at a magic school—she was figuring because of the robes it had to resemble something medieval, but she wasn't read to discard her entire wardrobe.
But did bring enough anxiety to power the entire world twice; she had been told a long while ago that she would be going to Hogwarts but the day had finally came and it was like all of Lauren's worries had decided to pounce on her. Her heart was nearing face but she managed to look collected, with a nonchalant face. Her stepmother sometimes gave her curious glanced, as if she were expecting her to be biting her nails and flinching at every oddity.
They came to the place. Lauren had pestered her stepmother until she finally explained how a platform three-fourths of something even existed. She was supposed to run through some walls, oblivious to muggles. Wanting to get it over with before she lost her nerve, Lauren braced herself and ran right through, realizing too late that she hadn't even uttered a goodbye to her stepmother. Oh well.
Lauren was hit with the blinding color and sound of a famous freight; the Hogwarts Express sat on the tracks before her, a crimson train whistling just loud enough to drown out the sounds of people all around. No, not just people, wizards. Lauren face broke into a grin as she looked around. There were so many of them, and she could just tell they were magic, and not just by some of their strange...ness. Lauren felt a little too plain looking at all of them, but decided not to think too much of it.
Lauren, not having anyone to talk to, leapt onto the train after giving her luggage. She looked around for a seat, which probably wasn't that hard to find, considering that she was early...or, perhaps late. Lauren glanced out a window and saw that the number of younger wizards had dwindled. She hadn't even noticed. Maybe she had gotten sidetracked while looking around. Nevertheless, students filled the compartments to the brim, almost, and she was beginning to wonder if she would ever find a seat.
She chose an empty compartment, not yet ready to speak to these other magic kids. She sat there for a while, or maybe it was hours, until Lauren heard some commotion nearby. She got up and peeked through the door: down the corridor she saw an elderly witch pushing a trolley. Lauren's eyes widened at the sight of all the candies and treats. Her hands slid into her pocket, fingering the coins she had. They were still very strange and funny-looking, the coins, but they definitely weren't worthless. She already saw other students using them to purchase the goods, which she was just about to do.
Lauren stood there, waiting to buy some. She took notice of some kids in their own compartment, exactly four of them. She watched them for a moment too long, then looked away, flipping her coin; wishing a little that she could make friends too.

Shortly after Cormac had settled himself next to @John Wolfe, another boy stuck his head round the compartment's door. Same fashion style as the blonde. ‘Proper pure-bloods, the two’, he thought. Rather than dislike, it was mostly envy he felt. Despite being the descendant of a long line of wizards himself, his family was nowhere as wealthy or prestigious as one would expect a pure-blood family to be. His trainers were fine, and so was his jacket, but he would swap them for a fancy cloak and a pair of black shoes in a heartbeat. This desire, though, was something he had decided to keep for himself. Nobody needed to know about it.
As the dark-haired kid came to sit in front of them, Cormac suddenly remembered seeing him at the platform: he was the lad whose mother had been desperately trying to give a beauty treatment to, just over a minute ago.
“I'm Bast. You alright?”
“Good, thanks. I'm Cormac, nice to meet you.”
He offered the compartment's new passenger a handful of Bertie Botts Every Flavour beans and spoke again.
“Your mum was doing your hair just now, wasn't she? My mum's crazy about my hair too. She can be a drag sometimes.”
Just then, a blonde girl appeared on the doorframe.
“Um, hello, mind if I join you? The other compartments are quite full.”
Cormac gestured for her to come inside and proceeded to shovel a bunch of beans into his mouth.
“Ah, blimey!”, he said as he spat the sweets into his palm, “I got a rotten egg one.”

Finally it was Lauren's turn to talk to the trolley lady. She brooded over the choices, since there were a variety of treats the choose from, nevermind the amount of flavors. She sucked on the bottom of her lip, studying bee choices blissfully. She never really had a taste for sweets before but these magically enhanced ones were extraordinarily enticing.
She decided on a pack of jelly beans, a box of chocolate frogs, licorice wands, and a cauldron cake. Lauren paid for her items and hurried along, forgetting about that compartment for a moment. She sat in her empty one, putting her treats on the little table. She didn't even know what she wanted to eat first, but then decided on the chocolate frogs.
Lauren opened the five-cornered box and took on the frog-shaped chocolate. On the inside of the box was a little picture of someone with a name written underneath. “Jocunda Sykes...okay...” She had no idea who that was and didn't care at the moment. She studied the frog before popping it into her mouth. It was a little too big to be stuffing in there but she didn't care—the chocolate was delicious.
The young witch quickly opened another box, meaning to eat it's contents as well, but this time things were different. As soon as the top came off, the chocolate frog leapt out of the box and became hoping about. Lauren stared in awe, gapping at the little brown thing that was acting like something it technically wasn't. But then it came back to her, it was magic, of course. She couldn't be too surprised about such things now that she was going to a magic school.
She debated over going after it, since it was hopping dangerously close to the doorway, but she just shrugged and picked something else to eat. Lauren picked a cauldron cake. It looked like...a tiny pie, just with powered sugar sprinkled on top. Lauren bit into it and decided that it was good too, just not as much as the chocolate frogs. Sadly she had only bought two of each thing so she'd have to wait...
Or maybe...Lauren remembered that the other kids in the compartment right next to hers had also bought treats from the trolley. They probably had chocolate frogs, she figured that she could trade her owns sweets for at least one of them.
She got up and left her compartment. Lauren stood right before the doorway. She took a shallow breath and stepped forward.
She took in the students. There was one girl and three boys. They seemed to be sharing treats, which she was thankful for. It wouldn't look too weird for her to be asking random people to trade.
Lauren cleared her throat loudly. ”Hi, are you guys willing to trade?” She held up an unopened cauldron cake and some of her other treats, like a pack of jelly beans. “I only bought two chocolate frogs and one of them got away. Mind trading one for anything?”
Lauren was wearing a purple sweater with a white collar and a pair of jeans and sneakers. Her blonde hair was tied into two high ponytails. Her blue eyes gazed around the crowded compartment hopefully.

She nodded and put her trunk up on the rack and sat down next to Bast since there was no other place, she moved away a bit and looked at all of them. Pure-bloods, she thought of how she had been treated by them in the past and shuddered a bit. She giggled slightly when Cormac popped the jellybean in his mouth and almost instantaneously spit it out. She looked over at the door to see a female with blonde hair and a purple sweater "You have to ask him, I just joined them" She opened her chocolate and took a bite of it, the female looked like a muggle, she was happy to see a half-blood of muggle-born in the compartment.
She looked out the window as it started to move, it was her first time being on a train so it was a bit weird to her, she took a small notebook from her pocket and a quill her father gave her, she started to draw the people in the compartment which was weird since she had no ink but it was still appearing on the paper. Angela drew the male next to her first, then the two males across from her and finally the female in the doorway. She took another bite of the chocolate and worked on the details on the three males and one female, she was really good at drawing and when she finished she put it aside and closed the small book and returning the quill and the book back to her hoodie pockets.

Away We Go
John has been clasping his hands in his lap, awaiting the journey to Hogwarts and replaying everything his father had gone over with him. Things to keep in mind while away, an Owling schedule he was to keep up, when his family were going to be on holiday and to not write, general social etiquette... and of course the proper types of people his father wished him to interact with.. make connections most likely. A small spark of anger boiled in the pit of his stomach, nagging at him as he thought of the tension in his father's tone. He needed to expell some energy...
Standing he lowered his trunk from the seat and managed to push it under the seat. Most likely there would be a train attendant and he did not want to be told one more thing by an adult today. Especially in regards to proper luggage handling and allowing others to sit in the compartment.
John sighed heavily and unbuttoned his jacket, sliding his arms from inside the sleeves and resting it neatly on his lap as he sat back down. Now all that was left to do was wait.
His green eyes flicked to compartment door as movement shuffled just outside. Trying to not visibly grit his teeth together, John stared at the door frame as a boy came into the small space, blue eyed and looking eager as ever. A bland expression crossed John's face as he looked him up and down, sizing the boy up.
“Hello, I'm Cormac... Can I sit here? I've got sweets.”
He most certainly did, green eyes scanned the boy's hands seeing the wealth of candy he held. Nodding at Cormac, John stood and held out a hand almost mechanically from constant practice of proper social greetings. "It is nice to meet you, Cormac. John Wolfe." He would shake the boys hand if the greeting was returned just as another entered their space. Messy hair.. except more put together than Cormac.
John shook his head as the newcomer asked about joining them, not that the boy even bothered to wait.. He thought of the reaction his father may have at that and resisted the urge to huff audibly. Anymore people and John wasn't sure how he was going to handle being squeezed in. Not to mention the wrinkles it may cause his jacket if it had to be crumpled to one side. He couldn't agree more however, it did seem a lot quieter back here compared to the rest of the train.
Deciding if the boy would not do with formalities, perhaps John would forgo it. Why waste his time and he had already been mid greeting with Cormac as it was. John finally took his seat before anyone else could arrive, Cormac choosing the spot next to him. He didn't want to end up having to leave or feeling shut in. I got here first... A small voice in the back of his mind sounded irritated. Pushing the thought to one side, he ran a hand through his hair untangling it and making sure it was still in proper condition.
A small voice made John's eyes shoot back towards the doorway. Another?! Just how many people were going to shove their way in? He let everyone else chatter on for awhile and sat quietly observing. Fending off an eyeroll at Cormac's sudden statement of his unwelcomed flavor of Bertie Botts. A huge reason as to why John never tried them. Surprised and unexpected things was not something he enjoyed... candy or otherwise.
It seemed like another person was just outside their compartment partaking of the sweets cart. Lovely looking pale-blonde hair, something familiar to him as most Purebloods he had met in Germany were of the same look. It felt nice to see something that reminded him of home. He wondered if she was Pureblood or.... Muggleborn.. Looking back to the window, John tried to block out any of the conversation the others were having. Just how long was this trip going to be...
”Hi, are you guys willing to trade?”
It must have been the other girl who had just been at the cart... Re-folding his coat on his lap and turning to look at everyone else who still seemed enthralled with their sweets, he noticed it was her. Jeans and sneakers... Maybe she wasn't a Pureblood afterall. It wasn't an outfit he had seen most don that shared similar blood as he did in the Wizarding World.
Any offers of treats and sharing... trading, John just gently shook his head to and held a hand up with a quiet tone, "No thank you." Typically he would be made to engage in some sort of conversation with the others by his mother but.. she wasn't here. She couldn't force him to open his mouth and yet her voice prodded him to speak up. Green eyes narrowing slightly he just returned his gaze to the outside world. Perhaps they would just think him shy. That was perfectly fine with him. Until they touched on any worthy topic, John wasn't sure he was inclined to speak his two sense.
Out of the corner of his eye he noticed the girl sitting next to Bast drawing. He had picked up a hint of what he assumed was a Welsh accent in her tone. Something again, familiar to home. Well... his second home anyway. It didn't seem any of the others were going to really let the other girl in right away so John cleared his throat and stood up, offering the girl his hand. "Pleasure, I'm John. You can take a seat with us if you'd like." A politeness to his voice as he gave a smile before taking his seat once more after the greeting, trying to shuffle over so the girl would have some space.
If this train ride was as long as John expected... he may as well let himself enjoy it.
