A Tower of Tomes
Talia finds the Library after three hours of attempting to navigate Hogwarts' uniquely (and infuriatingly) complex corridors. Despite the hastily scribbled map on the back of her copy of Hogwarts, A History, it's apparent that the magical school is disinterested in the idea of giving her an easy time—and honestly, she hadn't been expecting it to be a cakewalk, but she wonders if it's too much to ask for one staircase that doesn't move every time she takes a single step towards it.
She's already feeling frustrated. Despite having grown up in a cottage that houses five magical siblings and several non-magical but equally chaotic cousins, everything about the wizarding world is still so daunting, so unnerving, and so intimidating that it takes her several deep, shaky breaths before she can even step inside her destination. She attempts to steel herself, clutching tightly at the strap of her book bag until her knuckles have gone bone-white, and it's only after she feels the anxiety ebb away from her bones that she finally crosses the distance between herself and the Library's threshold, keeping her head bowed until she's fully inside.
When she looks up, she can't exactly say she's comforted by the sight.
In any other situation, she would have been absolutely ecstatic to see the amount of shelves lining the walls and even forming walls of their own, but it hits her, in that moment, that she has absolutely no idea where to start. There are tomes everywhere: lined up on the shelves, stacked into towers on the floor, in the dusty corners of the massive cavernous room... some of the books look mundane enough, but some are gilded with flawless gold and some shiver and shake in their spots and some, she thinks, might try to bite her fingers off if she even attempts to reach for them.
Talia opens her mouth and looks around, thinking that there might be somebody she could ask for assistance, but even the massive Library is brimming with the bustle of students and elves milling about and extracting one academic material to another, and the noise hits her just enough that it's not loud but it's insistent and dizzying and overwhelming and too much.
There's simply too much going on around her, on the shelves and between them, that she feels her knees buckle under the pressure. She manages to land in a vacant chair, her book bag dropping to the floor—had somebody put it there? She doesn't know, she can't tell. The edges of her vision are beginning to turn a terrifying shade of gray, and she braces her elbows on her knees and puts her pounding head on her hands, rubbing frustratedly at her closed eyes with the heels of her palms.
"You're alright, you're alright," she chants under her breath, moving her touch from her eyes to her temples and rubbing there. Something in her skull begins to throb and she think she might cry, but she holds onto what semblance of stability she has left and takes a deep, trembling breath, holding it in her lungs for five seconds (she makes sure to count) before exhaling slow, and then repeating the exercise two more times.
It's all too much. She wonders if life would have been easier if she'd been born as a Squib instead.

A Tower of Tomes

The Library had become something of a sanctuary for Illowy. Save for an incident or two in her first year, hardly anything terrible ever happened in the library. It was quiet and safe, everything being there for mostly the same things; to learn and make themselves stronger. Something that Illowy could certainly get on board with. However, she still remembered her first time in the library. It's great and looming shelves of content could easily be overwhelming, there was no arguing that. At least, not until you got the hang of it.
The second year had tucked herself into a plush chair, her study work around her, when she'd taken notice of a young first year entering. Not exactly a special sight, but it was the way that she child seemed to turn white as a sheet the moment she looked around the vastly, seemingly endless chamber. Icy hues analyzed the child, how she clutched the strap of her bag like a lifeline, and seemed to tremble. It made her think of a ballet recital she'd once been in. A new girl who'd never had to preform on such a large stage, with such a large audience... she'd had the same look of fear on her face before she dropped on stage like a sack of potatoes.
Not exactly graceful for a ballerina.
Rising from her seat and leaving her book behind on the cushion, Illowy started over to the girl. She watched one of the house elves who's attention had been caught by the girl, bring her over a chair just before the child collapsed in it. Illowy gave a nod to the elf, reassuring it that she'd take care of the situation before it ran off to continue its work.
What in the world could have the girl in such a tizzy? After all, this was the library. Wasn't this place suppose to be like a drug to Ravenclaws?
The snake watched the girl fold into herself, muttering and mumbling as she tried to calm and comfort herself. However, when that seemed to not be working, Illowy decided it was time for this little fit to come to an end, "That's enough now." she spoke, keeping her voice soft, but her tone firm as she crouched in front of the girl, "We havn't even had exams yet, and you're already losing your head. Now, take a breath, get your color back, and lets get out of the middle of the walk way."
Illowy was never known for her tact. Even when her friend had been hurt the year previous, in spite of Illowy's warnings, she'd still called her friend a 'silly, stupid girl'. Of course, she'd meant it endearingly, and she was glad her friend wasn't more seriously hurt... but still. Tact was on her list of things to work on.
"Come now. Stand up." she ordered softly once the child seemed calmed down a bit, "Go sit." the older girl pointing to corner where she'd come from, the small nook containing a couple other chairs aside from her own, which still was still guarded by her belongings.
I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

A Tower of Tomes
Natalia freezes when a voice reaches her ears, gentle but steely with conviction. For a fleeting second, her breath catches in the back of her throat, and when she looks up from her lap and at the stranger, blue eyes glassy between her shaky fingers, she thinks she sees a familiar figure through her watery vision—she sees Cain, smiling crookedly at her, with those irises as dark as the midnight sky, hard with practiced discipline but twinkling nevertheless with a secret mischief that they've always shared between them, only them... but then the stranger speaks, voice foreign, and the vision fades away into reality.
At the older girl's command, the young Ravenclaw nods her head and takes a slow breath, forcing her lungs to steady and not wrangle the puff of air into a sob that would surely get her started again. The world does still seem like it might be spinning away from her senses, but she focuses her attention on the stranger and breathes, breathes until she can at least start to remember what her body feels like again.
"Sorry..." She tries to say, but the word comes out choked, quiet enough that she doubts the other would have heard it. The frustration pounds in her chest, but she nods anyway at the stranger's next few orders. Taking the strap of her book bag into her palm, she slowly gets to her feet and tests a step, careful not to let them buckle.
It feels so silly—she feels so silly, and she bows her head in shame as she wanders over to the corner the girl had pointed towards and occupying one of the vacant seats.
Should she say something? She isn't quite sure. Natalia has never been one to say much, especially not after subjecting someone else to what could have qualified as a meltdown, but she fears that saying nothing would come across as rude. In the end, she clutches her bag to her chest tightly and attempts to look at the stranger—not directly, but certainly in her general direction, and the young Ravenclaw hopes that it's good enough. "Th-thank you. I..." She stops, uncertain of what to say next, and it takes her another deep breath before continuing. "That happens often, I'm afraid—I'm terribly sorry you had to see that."

A Tower of Tomes

Illowy stood as the girl finally got to her feet, stumbling her way to the little nook of chairs. Once she was seated safely, Illowy went about returning the chair to one of the study tables and retreating back to her seat, picking up the book and tucking herself back into the chair, legs crossed under her. She'd resigned that the best approach was to let the girl be until she was calm enough to speak to her on her own. With that, Illowy simply returned to her reading as though nothing had happened.
It wasn't until the child spoke up once more that she glanced back at the first year with her cold gaze, "Its silly to apologize for something out of your control." she spoke plainly, "So long as your fine and got your wit about you in the end, that's what all matters. You're fine to sit there until you've got your head back." the older girl tucked a tress of long back waves behind her ear and re-situated herself in the over stuffed chair once more, balancing her notes on her knee and holding her pen and book in her hands.
"Though when you're ready, I'd love to know how a Ravenclaw, of all people, would be overwhelmed by books. Isn't that suppose to be better then sweets to you lot?"
I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.
