How do you like my story so far?
SETTING

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
"Only when you first fly will you know the secrets of Felina. For when you are up there, the whole island spread out below you, you will realize something. We each are nothing but a single star in the sky, though some choose to shine more brightly than others."
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The great land of Felina.

It is one of a chain of four islands. The first would be Apean, (Ape-ee-on) a jungle-infested continent controlled by the Tailless, or humans. After that comes Mithica, (Myth-ih-cuh) which is rocky and mountainous. I suppose it would make an excellent home for many species, however, it has been infested with dragons for a while now. Fourth would be Eventide (Ee-ven-tide). Eventide is the only other island whose existence is verified by the Felinans, though very little is known about it.
And third from left to right is Felina. By far the largest and most diverse in ecosystems, it is full of life. However, there are the main specimens, and that would be Cats.

Its shape strangely appears like a winged cat, curled in sleep. The wings arch over the head and the tail curls around. This peculiar occurrence has been the inspiration for many a myth and legend. There are two mountain ranges, one on each “wing”. The top mountain range is the Wing Mountains. Much the Himalayan Mountains, the peaks are sharp and covered in snow. The lower mountain range is slightly warmer but highly windy. These are the Storm Mountains. However, they could hardly be called mountains now. (Though there is a long stretch of cliffs, called the Red Cliffs, further north) Erosion, over time, has worn them away until they are no more than rolling hills in a massive grassland, constantly washed by freezing drafts rolling down the Wing Mountains, which tower high above. The Cold Tundra is a freezing arctic wasteland on the "head". Full of rabbit holes, it's pretty inhospitable except for those who know all the tricks for how to survive. Sitting between the two comically thin "legs" is the Telk Bay. More of a jungle river then part of the ocean, it is warm and full of rainforest life. The "legs" and "shoulders" are part of the Biting Jungle, your average leafy, venomous, and carnivorous habitat. A rather large portion of the island's "body" is made up of the Plains of Fire, a massive savanna. It's very dry here, though muddy at some points, and on famine years the whole ecosystem is vulnerable. Lastly is the place that is last on purpose. The Felinans call it simply "A Forbidden Place". So little is known about it, it being forbidden, that it would be unfair of me to pretend I know enough about it to write a sentence.

So there you have it. A description of Felina. Only one question remains, the one you may be pondering. Who are the Felinans? That is hard to explain, my friend, for they come in seven different forms. Six of these forms are "Tribes". However, each of the Tribes has a few things in common.

1. They are cats. Like the animal. Cats.
2. Each Tribe mirrors a different kind of big cat. (Tiger, jaguar, ect.)
3. They are giant. Though each comes in its own size, even the smallest type is about the size of a fairly large car.
4. They have wings. Those things on birds.
5. They have elemental powers. Very cool.

Now that we have that straight, I think we should have a good look at the life of a Cat. (Author's Note: In reference to the species of the Felinans, the C in Cats should be capitalized to show that this is not a thing you would find on Earth)

It all starts as a Pair. I debated for a while whether or not to share this piece, but as it is important to the plot I'll throw it in. Pairs are exactly what they sound like. Two Cats of the opposite gender who decide to live their lives together. One thing should be added to this simple idea. Pairs of alternate Tribe members are even more illegal than a visit to A Forbidden Place. The children that may come to be from this are so dangerous that... we shall not speak of it.

Young Cats are called "Cubs" from birth until their first birthday. Depending on their birth Tribe, the way they are raised varies. Cubs are, if you haven't figured it out yet, the seventh appearance of Cats. You see, up until they turn five, they are as unextraordinary as possible. A misty shade of gray, the are the size of a kitten and lack wings and Powers.

Here are the six Tribes, their element, their wing type, their territory, and what their homes are.

1. Lion Tribe: Fire, their wings are covered in golden fur, they are the only Tribe that is social once reaching adulthood. They have no set home and are constantly on the move, wandering the Plains of Fire.
2. Tiger Tribe: Water, their wings are coated in shimmering rainbow scales like fish. They choose to live right on the banks of Telk Bay in Lodges, which are structures similar to what beavers build.
3. Jaguar Tribe: Earth, they have feathers in shades of blue and green as well as neutral colors. They roam most of the Biting Jungle and dwell in towering, multi-level treehouses.
4. Cougar Tribe: Air, they have wings that are much like bat's, with leather stretched over a frame. Taking the Storm Mountains and Red Cliffs as their homeland, many raise their young in totally safe eagle nests.
5. Snow Leopard Tribe: Ice. Curiously, Snow Leopards have no wings, instead, they simply run on the air. Because their Cubs lack a warm coat, they tend to live in snow caves similar to igloos that are surprisingly warm.
6. Panther Tribe: Shadow, their wings are, rather creepily, made of bones. They do not raise up their young, instead, they have adopted a survival of the fittest attitude, leaving the Cubs to survive on their own. Pather Tribe did not choose their territory of the Cold Tundra, rather, the other Tribes chose to keep them as isolated as possible.

And so, the Cubs grow. Once they reach the age of five, their parents fly them to a tiny island near shore known as the Place of Changing. Here, the Cubs sleep for a whole year and develop their wings, powers, and unique coat. Through this process, they are identified as a certain Tribe as chosen by the universe. When they wake up, the new Tribers are transported to their Tribe's Academy. The location of each one is a carefully kept secret, therefore, it is only fair that you discover where they are on your own.

At the Academy, they attend classes for seven years before becoming a full adult and setting out on whatever career they have chosen.

School Info:
-The standard classes are Flying, Magic, Studies, Nature and two Electives. When you get older you will also take Career Classes

"You new the stories better then anyone, and yet you never truly understood. Never truly believed. Oh, Tesel. Just because I'm leaving doesn't mean I'm gone."

Leset.

At the beginning of our story, she is five years old, and by the end, she is seven. What, you may wonder, happened in between? That is for you to find out later, for this is not about then, but before. (Author's Note: This information is from about a week before the story begins. Keep that in mind as you read.)

Backstory, Relationships, and Personality
Born to two loving, gentle parents from Tiger Tribe, Leset had a sheltered childhood. Not that she liked it. Constantly bouncing off the walls, she drove her younger sister, Tesel, crazy. However, the two shared a very close relationship and were always there for each other. As for her parents, Father was always the funny one and the provider for the family. Mother, on the other hand, was the keeper of order. (Or, as Leset would say, the keeper of everything that was the exact opposite of Leset)

Though she loved both parents dearly, who her favorite was was not only obvious but not hidden at all. Thankfully, this fact never bothered anybody.

There is not much else for me to say about her backstory and relationships, for, the truth is, though Mother and Father were excellent parents they were also very overprotective. So, I'm sorry to say, up until her 5th birthday Leset had never been out of the family Lodge.

Knowing three cats and one place for your whole life thus far is incredibly, incredibly boring, and this fact molded Leset into who she is. Talent-wise she is incredibly gifted. Practically a genius and athletically amazing as well, she holds a lot of potentials. I wish I could say the same thing about her social skills. Growing up with little interaction, she is actually antisocial and will distance herself as far from you as possible unless you two are, like, besties. In conversation, she is unintentionally a little self-absorbed and can say things she doesn't mean. Despite this all, she is also loyal and compassionate if you manage to break the wall she builds around herself. Lastly, she has a great dislike for rules and is bound to become a big troublemaker as she gets older. Brave, fierce, independent, explorative, and maybe a little insecure. That is how most Cats would describe Leset.

Physical Information
Bigger and less graceful than her sister, she is still undoubtedly very strong. Slim and sleek, she has way more muscles than a cat her age should have. As she is a cub, she has very little distinguishing features, though I am going to list them anyway.
-Even as a Cub, she is... beautiful
-Startling, deep amber eyes
-A thin scar runs down her front right leg, barely visible underneath the fur
-Large for her age, and strongly though slimly built too
-Long, nimble legs
-Powerful shoulders that will come in handy once she gets her wings
-Her coat is a darker and slightly blue shade of gray, like a cloud full of rain hovering on the horizon

Aspirations and Other Information
Leset hasn't stopped much yet to consider her future. She does want a job when she's done with school that involves some traveling and is, preferably, exciting.

Main Characters: Tesel

"You can do it. I know you can. And if you don't, I'll still be here, won't I? Nothing anyone or anything could possibly do could throw me off a cliff and away from you. For, you see, I have wings."
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

She was the younger sister. The one in the shadow. The obedient one, who was willing to breathe silently in a quiet room, as to not draw attention to herself. And yet, she always had a feeling deep down inside that there was more for her somewhere. She found it, eventually. This, however, starts at the beginning.

Backstory, Relationships, and Personality
Although she hated her childhood as much as Leset, Tesel was always the eye of the hurricane back home. Her father was close to Leset, and, seeing that the "fun" parent was taken, she turned toward Mother. Mother was, perhaps, a bit more Teselish. Quiet, kind, but with a wild side hidden deep down. When they first really reached out to each other, things were really awkward. But then, a sunray shone through the clouds. Storytelling. She instantly became fascinated with the tales and legends of heroes and dragons and other islands on the far horizon. By the time she left the Lodge, Tesel knew every story that had survived the ages.

As for Leset, she felt a kind of compassion for her. Compassion was set in her very being. Not half as smart or bold, she was better at reaching out to others and finding them when they were in the dark. She was quiet, kind, caring, sensitive, and polite, but you must never forget she wasn't just some robot that was always happy and nice. There's a fire in there. Be warned. Leset was... crazy, and most certainly definitely annoying. But she was just lonely, and bored, and wanted to stretch her legs. Although she was a little bit less eager to get out there and throw herself into battle, they were not total opposites but rather had a lot in common.

A bit gentler and always ready to sit and listen, she also had a passion and interest for animals, plants, and other forms of nature. Though she hated being cooped up, there was always a bright side if you looked hard enough, which was her philosophy.

Physical Information
With a similar build as her sister, Tesel is lean but mighty. Her legs are really long, as well as her tail. A natural sprinter, jumper, and climber, she could often be found hanging off the ceiling just because it was the only thing around she could hook her claws into. Here are her distinguishing features as a Cub.
-Less pretty than her sister, but not ugly either.
-Eyes are small and dark gold
-Unusually long and strong claws
-Long legs and tail
-Strong and skinny body shape
-A medium-light gray fur color

Aspirations and Other Information
Tesel wants to have Cubs when she grows up. She is also intereseted in the career path of a Healer.

Section One
(Author’s Note: The “sections” will not appear in the rest of the story. They are just a way for me to organize events. Another Note: Some of this may not be the exact quality of before. I am simply getting my thoughts written down for now.)

As their fifth birthday, and therefore changing, looms closer, we meet Leset and Tesel. The two sisters have spent their entire life cooped up in the family Lodge. And although both are excited to be free, there is one small problem with their dreams. They include each other.

The night before her birthday, Tesel has a strange dream in which she, as a Cougar, is flying through the sky. A strange voice tells her to wake up and she catches a glimpse of a frighted-looking Snow Leopard and a ghost cat with a ruby set in his forehead before she wakes with a start. In the morning, the family begins the long trek to the Place of Changing, a small island set near the coast. Within a few minutes of their arrival, both sisters go into a trance before falling into a deep sleep.

Leset is the first to wake. She finds herself in a deep crater and at first, can not remember anything, not even how to walk. As things start coming back, she pulls herself out and meets Tesel. They figure out that Tesel has become a Jaguar and Leset a Lion- sworn enemies. Officials pull them apart and they forcefully begin to fly Leset to Lion Academy, which is inside Mount Roar, an active volcano. At one point she tries to escape but is captured and tranquilized. She wakes up in her new dorm room.

Section Two
Meanwhile, Tesel camps at the Place of Changing for the night then is taken deep into the Biting Jungle, where Jaguar Academy is located in the branches of the Great Tree. She is shown around the school by a friendly schoolmate named Frekla. The two become friends. After a sleepless night of missing her sister, she attends a day full of classes. Her memories Leset begin to slip away.

A few days later, Leset has settled in a began to forget as well. She has top grades in all classes except Magic, where she is the worst in the whole school, and a new crush, Yerral. The only thing dampening her spirit is Dominc, a troubled Third Year who seems to be following her. King Altabrazar, the Lion Emperor, takes a special interest in her and invites her into the Order of the Ruby, a sort of club for especially gifted students.

When Frekla goes missing, Tesel goes out into the jungle to search for her. She finds Frekla racing through the jungle. She claims that her memories have been stolen and that she is going back to find her family. Tesel remembers Leset, and, confused, tells Frekla to continue on her quest. On her way back to the Great Tree, a giant anaconda captures her. Just when she is almost squeezed to death, a Cougar Triber finds her and rescues her. He tells her that he is a messenger come to warn the Academy that Mount Roar (he reveals this is where the Lion Academy is) has been surrounded by Panther Tribe.

The next day, Leset is deep in the middle of battle. She fights brilliantly but Altabrazar finds her and tells her to go back inside the volcano, where it is a little safer. While wandering the hallways, she is confronted by Dominc, who tells her that he loves her. She sharply answers that she doesn’t. Angry and hurt, he advances toward her. In a moment of instinct, Leset lashes out and leaves a charred, smoking wound across his face. Terrified, she flees through the school and runs into Tesel, who has traveled for miles and miles to find her. They escape and decide to head for the Wing Mountains.

Section Three
While wandering through a forest, they realize they are being followed. Tesel recognizes the messenger from before. She realizes he is young, about their age. The messenger says his name is Akmir and that he can take them to his village. They agree. Tesel doesn’t trust him very much and her sister seems uncomfortable about something, but Akmir is at ease, chatting away.

They arrive in a Cougar Tribe village. Akmir tells them to have their magic ready since the streets are sketchy, and Leset bitterly replies that she has none. After hearing her story, Akmir realizes she is a Channeler, which is a form of magic thought to be dead. He leads them into a dark alleyway and they get surrounded by Panther Tribe Cats. Akmir tells the sisters about his harsh childhood then admits to them he turned them in for pay. However, as the enemy cats move in for the kill, he realizes he has made a mistake and the three of them fight off the Panthers.

That night, Tesel has another dream. In it, she is wandering through the Cold Tundra. Leset is with her and they talk. Suddenly, Dominc but with bone wings appears. The ghost cat leads them into a kind of enchanted mist. When Tesel wakes up she and Leset realize they had the same exact dream. This is supposed to be an ability of Cats born to parents of different tribes. They realize that Mother must have actually been a Jaguar. Akmir thinks her description of the mist fits what he knows about A Forbidden Place and Leset figures out that the ghost cat is Altabrazar.

They fly for two days down to A Forbidden Place, which turns out to be a massive stretch of desert caught in a never-ending rainstorm. They find Altabrazar waiting for them. He explains that he had found an enchanted gem that allowed him to enter their dreams and that there was something they needed to see. He leads them to a place where a massive amount of Panthers are camped, waiting for the perfect moment to invade Felina. They decide to separate and get help. Altabrazar says it makes sense for him and Leset to go to Lion Tribe, and Akmir and Tesel to Jaguar Tribe. However, Akmir insists he goes with Leset and, amused, they agree.

Section Four
Tesel and Altabrazar meet Frekla and a few dozen other students surviving in the Biting Jungle, calling themselves “Abel Pastor Animarum”, or Animarum for short. Animarum agrees to help them fight off Panther Tribe.

After arriving at Mount Roar, they find the volcano split in half, half its inhabitants dead, and the rest barely alive. But, after a very rousing speech from Leset, they summon their strength and agree to fight back.

The two groups meet near the camp and charge into battle. The events here could take up several chapters. This is what happens:
-Leset battles Panthers
-Tesel takes the role of medic
-Leset is pinned by Dominc, the new Panther Emperor, but is rescued by Akmir
-Yarrel flees and Leset scoffs
-Frekla dies
-The best Panther warrior dies and the army flees

The story ends (Well, the end for now, I’m planning to make this a trilogy) as the United Army rests and sleeps while Tesel stays on watch.

Side Plots

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
"So what if I'm only six? So what if I shouldn't exist? In a few days, Panther Tribe is going to invade, and I'm going to fight back with or without you. Because no matter how much this world hates me, it is my home as well."
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The story is incredibly complex, with at least seven subplots, so I'll put my favorites in here. As a side note, many of these are mentioned in the main plot. Stripped down, the core of the story is that two sisters of opposite Tribes are trying to stop Panther Tribe from invading.

Side Plot One: Frekla's Story
Frekla is Tesel's best friend. She's over-talkative but kind, and the two do everything together. Until the day Frekla goes missing. When Tesel catches her deep in the jungle, she claims that they have been somehow made to forget their family. Though this is never brought up again, it is, in fact, a tactic the Academies use to ease the pain of separation. However, Frekla sees this in a negative light and in between the jungle encounter and Tesel's plea for help, she loses her sunshine and rainbows attitude and becomes a strong leader. During the Pather siege on Mount Roar, she sneaks a couple dozen students out of the school. After her enthusiastic speech about keeping their memories and living as a team, most of them agree and they form a kind of secret organization deep in the wilderness called Abel Pastor Animarum, or Animarum for short. During the battle at the end of the book, she dies bravely protecting her troops.

Side Plot Two: Dominc's Rise to Power
As Dominc is one of the four characters whose point of view we get in the story, his life is much more explored then Frekla's. In fact, a lot of her life probably won't make it in. Dominc is a third-year student. He has a rough childhood as the son of a very criticizing father, but he remains strong. In his third year at Mount Roar, he spots a beautiful Cat named Leset. She has her eyes on Yerral, and his frustration increases. During the siege, he confronts Leset and tells her that he loves her. Her short reply that she doesn't breaks his carefully built wall. He steps forward threateningly and she lashes out with her claws. Being an unknown Channeler, she has fire in her claws and leaves three deep, burnt wounds across his face. As his emotions begin to slip away into darkness, he heads north on foot for Panther Tribe territory. By the time he arrives, he is nothing but a shell. The Emperor has just died, and Dominc begins giving public speeches about how they could rule the continent. At first, the others are wary of the fact that he is a Lion, but his inspiration wins. In a very painful magical ceremony, they turn his wings form fur to bone, marking him as a Panther. They then make him the youngest Emperor in history. For the rest of the series, he and his army are the antagonists. But, as I hoped to hint at through this paragraph, there are always two sides to every story.

Side Plot Three: Leset's Magic
In the world of Felina, every cat has elemental magic. But the way they use it is different. Much like Tribe, it is not chosen by the user. The two types taught at Academies are Shapers and Throwers. Tesel is a Shaper, meaning she can move and change the shape of the earth. (Earth being her element) Leset, on the other hand, has absolutely zero luck with magic. It is only until well into the story we discover she is a kind thought to be extinct: a Channeler. This kind has the magic inside of them, whereas the others draw on an outside force. It is also the most powerful type of magic. This power is something Leset will struggle with in the third book, but for now, it is just kind of cool and improves her already great fighting skills.

Side Plot Four: The Alternate Tribe Parents Scenario
It has always been accepted as fact that Cats born to mismatch Pairs are evil and dangerous. This is not true, but it does grant unusual and incredible abilities that can be used to do wrong. This is the reason that Leset and Tesel can share dreams. Their Father is a member of Tiger Tribe and their Mother a Jaguar who chose to disguise herself in the hopes that no one except her true love would ever know. Though the sisters will use their talents for good, or at least try to, there are still others that deem them untrustworthy. There are even some that believe they should be killed. In Leset's speech, she admits this fact. Though many choose to follow her, she also has to escape from a mob of Cats trying to lock her up. This is another side plot that will be more important in the other books but also solves a mystery.

Side Plots Five & Six: Altabrazar's Influence and Akmir's Love
Altabrazar is sharing this paragraph because he is not much more than an honorable mention. Though his interest in the sisters is definitely outside of the main conflict, and his role as a mentor for them, as well as the fact the United Army wouldn't have been formed without him, he, unfortunately, doesn't get much of the spotlight. Just a wise figure looking out for two young heroes. More intimately tied to the story is Akmir's love. He is the second (and thankfully last!) to be drawn toward Leset. Though his interest only amuses her at first, she gradually grows to share his feelings. During their flight to the Fire Plains, he admits that he likes her as more than a friend and she says, to quote almost word for word, that they should just survive to see the sunset tomorrow before they worry about that. It is when he rescues her from Dominc that she fully realizes how much she likes him. Aside from his very cute couple situation, Akmir has had a pretty tough life on the streets. It is easy to forgive him for betraying them at first if it was only to be able to buy another day's worth of food. It's up to you to decide if his good deeds owe up to his bad, but as a supporting character, he isn't going away any time soon.

"Oh, of course I can. And the views are magnificent indeed. But I must warn you, the journey is just as beautiful as the destination. I guess that counts for life as well."
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

He had a hard life growing up. And he did almost hand them over to Panther Tribe. But who is Akmir really?

Backstory, Relationships, and Personality
Akmir's mother abandoned him on the streets of a town in Cougar territory when he was just two years old, and after that, he survived by stealing food and selling things he found in the woods. When his Changing grew closer, he decided to stay. He went to a sheltered spot in the woods and slept for the year. When he got back, nobody could recognize him of course, and he pretended to be a lot older than he actually was.

Akmir had a few scrappy street friends, but they weren't very close. He is generally mistrustful of most Cats, especially older ones or rich ones. In fact, the closest he ever felt to someone was Leset. They aren't exactly the same, him being slightly more held back, but there are similarities if you know where to look.

He has a soft, serious voice, the kind that would better fit someone at least five years older. He's tough, and not much gets under his skin. However, he tends to distance himself to others and only really becomes his funny, cheerfull self around Cats he knows very well. He's also cunning. This fact has led him to a life of regrets, but he'll do what it takes to stay alive. Though Akmir usually puts himself first, he is very loyal and a great traveling companion.

Physical Information
Akmir is a member of Cougar Tribe, so he resembles a tan and rusty red-brown cougar. He's smaller than your average cat as well. His wings look a lot like bats, and one is slightly crooked. His eyes are strange, like a mix of gray, jade green, and brown. His whole body is crisscrossed with scars. He carries himself in a smooth, confident way.

Aspirations and Other Information
Akmir likes to envision himself living with Leset. Though he was a little uncomfortable with the fact that she was from another Tribe, all doubts went away when he found out about her parents.

Secondary Characters: Dominc

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
"I'm going to break it to you. Each and every one of you is useless. Useless alone, that is. But together, we are unstoppable."
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Oh, Dominc. The villain, the bad guy, the antagonist. He changes a lot over the course of our story. The goal of this description is to describe him before... and after.

Backstory, Relationships, and Personality
As you will know if you have read the "setting" portion, Lions are the only Tribe to live in a social environment as adults. In this extremely complex way of life, there is a dominant male, called the Lord. His mate is the Regina, and their eldest son is the Prince. The Prince inherits his father's position. All other children, their children, and loners who choose to join make up the rest of the Pride. Growing up in Akra Pride, Dominc was a nobody until his older brother was killed by a pack of wild dogs, making him the new Prince. However, his father, Akra, seemed to view this death as his son's fault.

Therefore, Dominc grew up in a very pressuring environment. He could never seem to please his father and his mother did nothing to help him. He did his best to remain strong but was nonetheless happy to be sent off to Lion Academy after his Changing.

Before the incident, Dominc was strong, brave, eager to prove, and hopelessly in love. However, after his wound, he began to grow bitter. During his long trek up to Panther Tribe territory, he had no one to talk to except the voice of his father in his head. Before long, he began to believe he was useless and that he never would be loved until he did something amazing. Something, perhaps, like ruling Felina. And so, all emotions left him and were replaced by a ruthlessness that would stop at nothing to achieve his goal.

Dominc was very close to some of his schoolmates, as well as with his subjects as a king. He has the air of a leader and is loyal as well, therefore attracting many followers. Even as a general in a bloodthirsty army, he left no soldier to die on the battlefield with untended wounds.

Physical Information
By his third year, Dominc was a thick, muscled Cat with a large and dark mane. Now, however, he was three black scars slashed across his face. They cut across his left eye, blinding him on that side. He has also become so scrawny that you can count his ribs. He has an aura of power around him and his working eye is solid black, with no white or other colors.

Aspirations and Other Information
He dreams of being the ruler of all of Felina. What else can I say?
