Carson had never met his father. He’d never wanted to, either, until that fateful day in the trophy room. Sure, he’d been curious from time to time, but he’d never wanted to see the man. He’d run out on his mother the moment Carson had been born, with nothing more than a note.

Once Carson had realized that he was a wizard, he began to wonder. What if his father had been a wizard? Had he gone to Hogwarts? Was he a Hufflepuff, like Carson? Did he play quidditch? What if he had, what if he’d been the captain for the Hufflepuff team and—

Carson wasn’t going to allow himself to get his hopes up. He’d been trying his best to avoid his father’s existence since first year, and he’d actually lasted for awhile. However, upon his return in second year, he broke. His curiously was too overwhelming and it wouldn’t hurt to take a peek, right?

The room was dim, light glinting off of golden plaques and trophies encased in glass. Carson immediately walked over towards the pictures of past teams over the years, the names engraved beneath their pictures. He scanned the rows, going one name at a time. His was going to take awhile, but it was worth it. If he didn’t find anything, then fine, he’d look in the old student records. He’d just much rather find him here than anywhere else.

Maggie knew something was up with Carson the moment he’d sat down for lunch with her. She knew her best friend more than anyone in the world, and she wasn’t stupid enough to let him do something dumb on his own. So, when she saw him looking mopey and conspicuous in the hallway, she did whatever any other normal person would— she stalked him. Okay, that sounded a lot better in her head. But you get the idea.

She followed him to the trophy room, her confusion growing with every step. What on earth? Was he sad about not being captain of the Hufflepuff team or something? She knew he liked Quidditch, but geez, he didn’t need a fucking character arc for it.

She watched him move over towards rows of pictures of past teams, dating back to black-and-white. She narrowed her eyes as she watched him walk towards the middle portion of the rows, skimming the plaques with his finger.

“What on Earth are you doing, dingus?” Maggie asked, forgetting all previous attempted stealthiness and walking up to Carson. Noticing how down he looked, Maggie placed a hand on his shoulder, a new, concerned expression appearing on her face and replacing the earlier humorous one.

“You alright, Car?” She asked, leaning around his frame a bit to look him on the eyes. “Don’t give me that ‘I’m tired’ bullshit, either, I’m not stupid.”

Carson turned when he heard Mags's voice, his eyes going a little wide. He felt like a deer caught in headlights or something, like his mom had just caught him playing on his phone in the middle of the night. Maggie, of course, didn't remind him of his mother in the slightest, the two were practically opposites.

"I- I'm, er, just looking at the past teams for Hufflepuff." he explained, scratching the back of his neck nervously. "The old ones, I mean. They- they're pretty good."

After a brief moment of silence, Carson knew that Maggie wasn't falling for it. He wasn't even remotely worried about being able to trust her, he just- he didn't want to stress her out with his problems. Problem. His one problem that he just couldn't get rid of.

"I uh, I never met my dad." he explained, scratching his nose. "I thought he maybe, y'know, would be in here." he motioned vaguely towards the records, realizing now how stupid that sounded. The chances of him being in here were slim to none, and it'd be like finding a needle in a haystack if he even was here. There wasn't even a guarantee that his dad had been a Hufflepuff, let alone a Quidditch player. Or even a wizard! Carson could be a muggleborn, and he'd be searching for nothing!
