Is this the right place to ask a question? My story has two main characters, does anyone know if I need to write 2000 words?

I'd say writing 2000 per character while definitely useful in the long run,
isn't necessary.

To be safe you could write 1000 for one character and then what ever you please for the second?

You will need to write at least 500 words per character if you have more than one main character. Since they are supposed to be the focus of your story there should be a certain level of effort involved in those characters to set them apart from other (side) characters in your story.
