It wasn't that Gem particularly fancied trouble, but he certainly liked people who seemed like they had the word "CONCERNING" written across their forehead in big, bold letters. The captain of the Gryffindor quidditch team seemed like just that, a real big jock with nothing more on his mind except tormenting the weak and sports. He was indeed Gem's opposite, albeit the fact they'd had no interaction aside from the very briefly written owls they'd sent one another. Gem had started it, only because at first, he wanted to see what the limit was before he got his head stuck up his ass, but that never happened. The reply back seemed creeped out, but it felt no different than passing a note into someone's desk like he used to do in primary school back in Sheffield.

Right now, he was sitting cross-legged, sort of near the great lake. He was chuffing on a newly lit cigarette, keeping polo mints in his pocket for when it was done-- he didn't need his breath smelling like Dunhill International when he was trying to make conversation. He'd wondered how it would go, for a moment, only because of how different the two were from one another. Opposites attract, they said, but they'd never mentioned being this opposite. He'd hoped for a conversation, maybe an arm wrestle he knew he'd lose but do anyway just because, or maybe they'd do something so unspeakably terrible that they'd be expelled from Hogwarts forever and being eternal shame to their families.

He hoped for the last.

What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.

Kyle wasn't really sure why he was bothering to meet this person who sent him an owl. It was most likely a trap to get him jumped...but if Kyle was being honest his knuckles hadn't been cut in quite some time and he was starting to feel like he was going soft, he honestly wouldn't mind getting into a toss up.

He shrugged off his robes and uniform before rummaging around in his trunk and grabbing a pair of dark denim jeans, a studded belt, and slipped on his usual black boots. He slipped on a black Dropkick Murphy's shirt with a tattered Irish flag and the words "Signed and Sealed in Blood" scrolled under the flag. To complete his look he grabbed his trusty leather jacket and he ran a hand through his messy hair to push it out of his eyes, though he knew eventually it would find its way black to blinding him once more. He couldn't wait until his hair was longer to do something with.

Long before he came up on Gem he smelled the Acrid smell of smoke and it made his face scrunch up. Surprisingly enough though, the closer he got the more the Smoke seemed to drown out the smell of the grass, the air, the flowers, the lake. Instead of being accosted by every smell within 100 yards he was only smelling the one smell. And honestly? It was almost refreshing, a relief to his senses.

Kyle rolled up on the guy with the cigarette, his hands rested in the pockets of his leather jacket. He cocked an eyebrow and examined the boy before him. "Alright. The hell are you 'sposed ta be, huh?" his Irish Accent was unmistakable, and there was a slight tone of hostility to his voice

Gem was pleasantly surprised when he heard twigs snap behind him, and a voice with a nice hostile ring to it. Had to have been Kyle, his voice really matched his face. He turned, the cigarette sticking out of his mouth, both eyebrows raised in question.

“Mm? Oh, Kyle!” He’d been practicing talking with a cigarette in his mouth, it ended up being pretty easy after some real focusing. Now, he didn’t even really need to think about it! “Sit.” He patted the ground beside him, reaching into his pocket to pull a cigarette and a lighter out, holding the fresh ciggie out to the suspicious newcomer.

He wasn’t sure if Kyle was attempting to establish a sort of dominance between the two, but Gem wouldn’t mind letting him think he was the alpha. For him, it never really seemed to matter who came out on top, it was too much work to worry about winning when you could lose and carry experience from it. It was really corny, but he’d been told that by Leland– and if Leland said it, it was probably true.

“If you’re worried about me planning on settin’ you up, don’t flatter yerself. I don’t think I could break a bone and not complain about it for years, and no one really wants that, aye?” He smiled, taking the cigarette from his mouth, holding it between his middle, index, and thumb. He blew a thin veil of smoke out on the lake, looking back up at the roughed up boy beside him, getting a real note of the way he carried himself. Certainly one of the bad boy types, not too different from the ones back at home, except this one could do magic and probably kill someone without panicking. He smirked at that thought, but only a little bit.

“How’re the games goin’, then? I don’t know much about quidditch, but you do. Roarin’ lions, huh?” He grinned, sucking up some more of that sweet nicotine to calm his nerves some more. He didn’t want his mouth to get the better of him, he knew Kyle would land a punch on his face without the bat of an eye.

Kyle eyed the other boy with a suspicious glare. He wasn't entirely sure if he believed the boy not trying to set him up or trick him or...SOMETHING...who knows. Kyle took the Cigarette but didnt light it, he ran it under his nose to take note of the unburning scent. It had a bitterness to it but it was earthy, nothing terrible. He wordlessly slipped it into one of his inside chest pockets before he rested his hands in his pockets once more.

How were the games? well the first game was in just a couple of days, so he didnt have an answer to that just yet. "Ive been practicing since last summer. I know im ready" he offered a shrug "If my team aint, they are gonna have a real bad time until the next game to make sure they are. There is no weakness on my Pitch." he looked from the boy out towards the lake for a few minutes, amazed that he couldnt really smell the water over the smell of the smoke. It was sort of nice not being assaulted by all the different scents of the lake. "Kyle is for the parents. Lads back home call me Rook"

Gem watched Kyle stuff the cigarette into his coat pocket, glancing back off across the lake. He'd remembered saying that the water was beautiful, and then his friend said he was gay for saying that. He had no idea what was gay about saying water was pretty, but maybe it was. Maybe he was gay for saying that.

Oh, so he was taking the captain and coach lead, huh? Interesting. It was like watching a gruff dad speak about his two sons, proclaiming the fact they'd never, ever fail, no matter what. He wondered how he'd act around his kids, if he ever had any. He'd probably beat them senseless if they spoke out of turn.

"Kyle is for the parents. Lads back home call me Rook."

Gem lifted his head a bit, turning it to face the blue-eyed brute next to him. He almost wanted to smile, and he did, a bit, the corners of his lips flipping up a bit. Maybe it was fond, but it was more of a smirk than anything. He wasn't letting down any walls yet, that'd require him to be prepared for some roughing up... he was too tired for that, today.

"Is that an invitation, laa?" He mused, pressing the cigarette back between his lips, flicking his lighter on and off, rekindling the flame that had blown out of his poison due to a small breeze. "Right, then, Rook. I'm Gem, an' you can call me Gem. The kids back n' Sheffield called me... hm, gay, fag, birdboy, idiot-- ye know, the classics?" He winked at him, pulling his knees back up to his chest. "Me cousin would bully em' back, though. Charlotte? She'd beat the devil outta them. Got e' strongest fists I've ever seen, she does. I'm a bit scared of what she's able to do. Y'know, one time, she broke a kid's elbow over her knee. If that doesn't make ya raise a brow, I dunno wot will."

He squinted, thinking about how she really liked to pick to people, watch people be picked on. Christ, if her and Kyle spent any time together, the school'd be in shambles. He almost grinned at the thought - almost.

"Say, ya haven't happened to 'ave met her, have you?"

"Is that an invitation, laa?" the other boy said said while holding the cigarette in his mouth. Gem, he said his name as well as a number of other words. Given the way they were used he could tell they were supposed to have negative connotations, though Fag stood out. He probably was called that because he smoked alot?

Then the boy began to go on about some girl named Charlotte who liked to fight other people and apparently once broke someones elbow. If anything he was more interested in meeting her, but for now the boy held his attention. Or perhaps it was just the fact that the smoke kept the rest of the overpowering smells at bay. Maybe a little of both?

Kyle rand a hand through his hair to push it out of his eyes, though the mess would almost always inevitably find its way back to where it currently sat once again. "Cant say I have. Only girls I really hang out with is Quin and Muppet, Unless you count Magpie but were blood" he offered a slight shrug and gave the boy another glance. He seemed to be an alright sort, and didnt seem to be overly timid or afraid of him. Most likely because he hadnt been warned by older students to watch out for him.

Then Kyle got an idea. A way to really test how alright he really was. "Alright Smolach, Up on yer feet. Heres whats gonna happen" Kyle moved his body as if he was taking the stance he used in boxing but he didnt bring his fists up. instead he took his left hand and slapped the side of his face by his jaw twice. "I wantcha to hit me. Hard as ya can. Yeah? y'aint gonna hurt me"

"Alright Smolach, Up on yer feet. Here's whats gonna happen,"

Oh no, that put a bad taste in his mouth. Watching Rook stand up and get in some fighting stance or whatever - that scared the shit out of him, he wasn't sure what he was trying to do, but when he elaborated, he sort of froze up. Man, he couldn't just make friends with one wack job without them doing whacky shit? Of course not.

"Ehm, is this some kinda test of yours, mate? Cos... if this is joost an excuse to beat me up, I'm- aw, fuck it." He stood up, flicking the bud of the cigarette off into the lake, making a few steps towards the slightly taller boy in front of him. Man, this kid had problems. Had he ever heard of therapy? Considered it, maybe? He looked down at his hands, all bony and faintly muscular because of all the guitar he played. He was a little guy, Kyle was a huge sunuvabitch. One hit in the face, and he would be a vegetable the rest of his life. He knew it.

"Uh... right. All right, I'll..." He pressed his lips together, curling his hands up into a tight fist, keeping his thumb outside so he didn't break it if he hit Rook too hard. God, that sounded funny. Hitting Rook too hard, he almost grinned, yeah, right.
He remembered watching his dad fight someone at a bar cause they'd called him something he didn't like, and he went at them like a wildcat. All bite, no bark-- well, maybe some bark. There was a lot of cussing. With an anxious exhale, he adjusted his fingers, trying to think of some motivation that he wouldn't make an ass of himself in front of someone he was attempting to be friends with. He remembered how Charlotte taught him, put half your weight into your legs, and the other half into the punch, and it should be fine. Don't lose sight of your target unless they're quick as balls, in which case, you need a gun. He could basically hear her voice in his head, the snorty giggle, and then her punching him right in the face afterwards.

So, he did just that.
He twisted his arm a bit, aiming right for wherever Rook had slapped - his cheek - and there it was, the collision was jarring, that was for sure. He hadn't ever really needed to hit someone, he was quite good at choking or punching people in the throat hard enough to get away, but in the face? He'd never ever done that. It sent prickles down his arm, made his muscles tighten up for a second, and he even winced. Damn, were his bones made of iron or something? Should he even apologize? He should apologize.

"Hey, I'm - I'm sorreh, I-" He didn't even know what to say, he felt kinda... bad. Though, at the very same time, it sent a rush of excitement down his spine and even had him grinning, no matter how badly his knuckles ached from that. Fuck, wait, that actually did hurt a lot, what?

Kyle stood there watching the other boy, waiting for a a punch or for them to wuss out. The boy looked conflicted, taking his time and closing his hand into a fist. From the looks of it this gem guy might actually follow through.

Then, it did. A quick swing of the fist brought it around to connect with Kyle's cheeks without a smack. His head turned with the blow, because Kyle knew better then to try and act tough and hold his head still when you could instead disperse the momentum, and he took a slight half step to to the left before adjusting his footing back to how it should be. Kyle laughed and brought his hand up to rub his cheek.

"No need to be Sorry Smoloch, that was a pretty soli-" Kyle cut himself off suddenly and without warning. Right as he did be rolled his shoulders, turned his hip and pivoted his feet to put as much power behind a punch of his own with his left hand right towards the center of Gem's facein retaliation. His blow was thrown with the precision of someone who had throw that punch a hundred times and had the power of someone who spent many days during his time at home punching a tree with pillows tied it. Both of which are actual things Kyle had done. "BOOM! Always expect the counter attack mate!" he laughed

For a second there, Gem thought Rook might actually show him mercy and --

No.
Those things about your vision going all blurry, the stilling shock of a punch in the nose - it was all true. Immediately, he felt wetness drip down his top lip, his hand flying over to cover his nose. Shit, was it broken? What would he do if his nose was broken? That'd be horrible. He'd keeled over by that point, the blood dripping down his wrists, getting the sleeves of his shirt all dirty. He grunted, tears pooling up at the corners of his eyes, dripping down his cheeks involuntarily. It hurt, it hurt like a bitch, but it was also an indescribable amount of fun.

He felt himself smile next, removing his hands from his face. Ow. It was a sinking pain, but it wasn't enough to keep him from getting all excited about it.

"You motherfucker!" Gem wheezed, immediately launching himself right at his new friend, tackling him right down to the ground. He didn't do anything, just kept Rook's wrists pinned while blood dripped down his chin and got all over his shirt. "You nearly broke me nose! How's that fer a first date?!" He couldn't keep from laughing, his head hanging off his shoulders limply. He was probably getting his red mess all over Rook's clothes, but he sort of deserved it.

Kyle shook his hand and laughed, he saw the blood running down the other boy's face and part of him felt bad but what's a scuff up with out a little blood huh? Besides, most of his interactions this year were with a girl. All chatting and and walking and blah blah BLAH. And where did that lead? To him and She will shall not be named getting into a blow out and a big yelling match. If he had his way that loser with her camera and him would never speak ever again. She was ashamed of him and he was annoyed with her. This is why he shouldn't hang out with Girls, they were all drama. What happened to the good old days where him and Duke would just fight and cause trouble.

"You motherfucker!"

Kyle was pulled out of his thoughts just in time to get speared, knocking the wind from his lungs as he was tackled to the ground, his wrist's getting pinned to the ground in the tumble. Kyle was not one to be kept down that easilly though. Kyle squirmed some to bend his knee and bring his boot up to rest on the diaphragm area of Gem's torso. "Bugger off Tosser!" he chuckled and he pushed as hard as he could to force Gem up and over his head with his leg to get out from under him. Once out from under the bleeding boy Kyle quickly scrambled to his feet and reset his footing. "We gonna do this, were doin it right Smoloch! C'mon, Gimme yer worst!" there was an excited gleam in his eye. This was the kind of Rush he had been missing Since his best friend...went away. The chance to get into a good matured fight with someone also seemingly having a good time was exactly what the doctor ordered.
