Periodic Mistakes

BOOM! Taking a few steps back, Gareth watched as the contents of his cauldron exploded and started overflowing onto the floor. Okay… I was not expecting that. Sighing, he checked his clothing for stains, and was pleased to find no significant ones. This potion, unlike the others, hadn’t even lasted through the first round of testing before blowing up. Oh well. At least I brought more with me this time. He’d only brought one bottle with him the day before, which, predictably, did not last for very long. Though, given the fact that he'd only ever done this sort of thing during class (in the muggle world, of course), the experiment was going considerably well.
On a sink beside Gareth was a worn-out leather satchel, which he often used to carry potions and ingredients. He'd found it to be more convenient than the boxes that he used for his other equipment. Reaching into the side, he took out an equally worn notebook, and began to jot down the results of the latest experiment.
Potion #3: Cure for Boils
Added ingredients: Baking Soda
Prediction: Will start bubbling like the others, not incredibly reactive?
Results:
- Bubbled then overflowed
- Extremely explosive - [why?]
- Did not break cauldron
- Continues to bubble when cool
- Heat is probably not a factor
Putting the notebook back in his bag, he picked out a fourth potion, a bottle of the Antidote to Common Poisons he'd made a couple days before. Just a few more to go. He then walked back to his cauldron, pulled out the stopper and poured in the contents of the bottle. As he recalled, this particular potion tended to stay relatively stable, even when brewed incorrectly. Then again, he was no expert at this, so the results were probably gonna be different than expected anyways. Really, anything could happen.
Hey, life has no meaning, but what else is new?

Periodic Mistakes
She was on her way to the common room, nothing but her wand on her, when she hears it. It sounded like an explosion - metal against wall. She looked around and found no one else there. A part of her wanted to turn around, surely if anyone was doing something that was not allowed it was best she wasn't part of it. However, there was also a part of her that wondered what caused the explosion, if someone was hurt.
She moved closer to where the sound was, there was a classroom on her right and she peeked inside it. She frowned, disappointed at the room's emptiness. She gives herself a moment to decide if she'll continue or turn back. Recalling her disappointment at not finding anything, she knew she was somewhat invested already and decided to look some more. Just one more, she said to herself, a promise to turn back if this next area was empty.
She moved closer towards the bathroom beside it, searching the door of any label but the door was obviously worn out and bore no label. She walked opened the door, walking as quietly as she could, not wanting to provoke anyone that was inside. The inside of the bathroom smelt of iron, much like blood, and old wood. It seemed to be abandoned long ago, which was understandable for an old castle. She shook her head in disapproval, it was entirely a waste of space. As she moved closer to the middle, her steps got caught into a puddle which was rapidly flooding the floor.
She used her mouth to hold her hand and raked her robes up to not get them wet, and followed the puddle to it's source. She noticed another person there, but was not close enough for her to recognise who it was. She moved inside one of the stalls and peeks to watch the student. She noticed the cauldron pieces surrounding him and wondered if that was what caused the explosion before. What are they doing, she wondered, also thinking of how to get closer without bringing attention to herself. If she was quiet enough, the person wouldn't have noticed her coming in and walking all over the place.

Periodic Mistakes
Gareth sighed. Of course the most unreactive potion would be the one to cause the most damage. These potions don’t follow the laws of chemistry AT ALL. One would have thought that there’d be at least some sort of rule with the reactivity of potions, but nope. Unfortunately though, he had a much larger problem at hand. His only cauldron was currently lying on the ground in front of him, in pieces, and he needed it for potions the next day. Of course, it would be too late to send out an order for another one, so the only solution here was to attempt to mend it using magic.
I think I remember how to do this… He’d read about the spell some time ago, while flipping through his charms book for spells that generated a lot of energy … It shouldn’t be too hard, right? Just point and say the incantation. Taking a deep breath, he pointed his wand at the mess on the floor, and performed the wand movement of the spell. “Reparo.” Instantly, the shards on the floor began to vibrate in place, and slowly gather where his cauldron used to be. He watched as they sealed themselves together perfectly, as if the cauldron had never exploded in the first place. Wow, that actually worked.
Before he could further admire the effects of the spell, he heard a sudden scuffling sound in what appeared to be one of the cubicles behind him. Whipping his head around, he saw that there was indeed a person standing in one of the stalls, almost definitely watching him. Especially since what he was doing here wasn’t even technically allowed in the school. Have they been here the entire time…?
Still, it’d be no use to pretend he hadn’t seen them, as they were most probably watching him as well. He just hoped that they weren’t here to prank him or spy on him. Some older students enjoyed doing that, for some reason, and that was why he chose the abandoned toilets on the second floor of all places to do this experiment. So, he decided that maybe talking was the best option. After all, they might be a regular student who just happened to wander by.
“You know, it was pretty smart of you to hide back there. The stalls are great protection from flying projectiles.” He grinned in their general direction, even though he wasn’t sure if they could see him from where they were standing. “But the explosions are over, so you can come out now.”
