Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
It's nearly ten o'clock at night. Half of the 1st year girls that share a room with me in the Thunderbird Dormitory are up with some of the older girls. Right now, it's just me, a sleeping blonde, and a shrimpy little Asian girl. I'm ignoring them both. Carving on the posts of my bed. Vandalism, technically, something I shouldn't be risking considering what awaits me at home if I were to be expelled. But old habits die hard.
Besides, I've already leafed through my DADA textbook, defacing every page with a mention of Dark Magic. Even scrawled, in teeny-tiny writing, bits of profanity I picked up from my Muggle friends. My brow furrows. Was hanging around them illegal? I mean, yeah, obviously; we literally went around vandalizing, trespassing, and picking the occasional pocket. But from what I picked up while skimming through my history book, American wizards have almost completely cut themselves off from Muggles, or No-Maj as they call them.
Oh well. It's not as though I can change the past. As long as they don't find out about my probably risky broom rides (hey, I didn't fly near any Muggle settlements) and questionable friends, I'll be fine. Speaking of broom rides, I actually have that very broom with me. Some old thing, a Cleansweep maybe, that I found in the shed of whoever owned the house before us. Us being me and my Dark Arts obsessed, elitist mother. Anyways, I nicked her little bag with the Undetectable Extension Charm on it, shoved the broom inside, and plopped it in my trunk. I couldn't care less if I'm not supposed to have it: if there's one thing in the world I love doing, it's flying.
I finish the new decorations to my bed by tracing a cloud shape with the tip of my pocketknife, adding a few raindrops below it. It's my signature, rain because it was dumping buckets when I was born. As if I'd risk even my initials anyways.
The knife disappears into the inside pocket of my robes. Blue and cherry-colored. Disgusting things. What's wrong with black? Black would match my ginger hair much better, and it's good camouflage at night. But that's when I realize I'm being watched. Shrimy over there has her doe-like brown eyes fixed on me. Who knows how long she's been watching me? For all I know, she could've seen the whole thing.
I casually retrieve my larch wand, its smooth, carving-less wood rolling easily between my hands. Sure, I don't know any magic yet, but that doesn't mean I can't get something to come out. Brown eyes slightly narrowed, I watch, wondering what she'll do. Turn me in? Ignore me? I could use a friend, a partner in crime even, but I can handle an enemy just fine too.

Roleplaying as approved dNPC Karilyna Kawahara || @Bridget Collins (as Phylicia Stanwood)I'm wide-awake, slitting my brown eyes almost closed so I can fool whoever's in my dormitory, while at the same time watching every shadow around the small room. The asleep trick worked all the time at home, but then, my adoptive parents weren't hard to con. They probably didn't even care about me, in the first place. I don't even know why I'm in bed. A lot of the other first years and older girls are outside talking quite loudly, and there are only two girls with me in the room. It's my first day, so I don't really trust people enough to close my eyes--after all, when I finally decided to stop watching vigil over my parents back when I was two, people had taken me to America without my knowledge.
I'm incredibly bored--I brought stuff to do, but I don't dare to move, feeling like I'm glued to my bunk. I've already taken note of what's in my room. Trunks and belongings litter the floor, dancing light from a fire outside flowing under the door and into our room highlighting every darkened shadow. And the other two girls laying on their bunks. The blonde is obviously asleep, light snoring sounds escaping from her half-open mouth. The other girl, however, is evidently awake. What is she doing with a butter knife or whatever she's got there? The brunette (or at least that's what I think her hair color is) is trying to chop up her bed or something, using her knife to slice the wooden bedframe. Maybe she's actually trying to break her bed apart (who knows, right?) or just venting her anger, but one thing is for sure. Vandalism. Honestly, I have nothing against it, being a bad evil interesting child myself, but I do know when to stop. I do have to give it to that girl though, nobody will know for sure that it was her. Except me, of course.
I gulp as she looks up, narrowing her eyes at me. What did I do? I mean, yes, I was creepily watching her vandalize her own bed, but it wasn't like I meant to do any harm. I had no problem making enemies--or friends, for that matter--but this girl did not look like someone I wanted to cross. I had seen plenty of shady people in my time, but for my age, this girl definitely won. Actually, I was a good "shadiness" contestant, spending most of my time away from home and shutting myself in my room for days at a time. And I may look like a stick, shrimp, or midget (yes, I've been called all those names), but those people have not seen my martial arts skills.
And then the girl drew her wand. Great. What did this weird girl want? Honestly, I did not feel like starting a duel in the middle of the night. And besides, we didn't know any spells yet. Sure, I've done things that I shouldn't have done in a million years, but I know my boundaries. And trying to duel a stranger without knowing magic (not really, at least) was something outside of the box.
Well, what choices did I have? The girl already knew I was awake, and there was nothing I could do about it. Of course, I wasn't about to sleep with this girl watching me. So, grabbing my wand from under the covers (yes, that's where I keep it) and sat up. I couldn't deny the fact that I was obviously moving, but at least I was silent. Taking a deep breath, I slide out of bed and stalk over to the other girl's bed, bare feet padding silently on the cold floor. I almost froze, but kept going. What was I going to say? I'm not a coward, but it wasn't like I was dumb enough to get myself into an unnecessary fight. "So," I began, "My name is Karilyna." Might as well get down to the facts. And hope this girl didn't try to kill me.

The girl makes her way to my bed. Bare feet pad noiselessly across the floor, moving with that stealthy grace that rarely comes naturally. The mark of experience sneaking around and not wanting to be caught. She stops a few feet from where I sit crossed-leg on my bed. The dark-haired girl eyes me warily. She's carrying a wand.
Oh. Those two details confuse me at first, but then I get it. If she was in fact, watching me the whole time, she probably thinks several things things about me, none of them good. Like that I'm a vandal. And maybe a psycho. Which is probably at least partly true. But I do have boundaries. Hurting people is my mom's thing. Not mine, although I'm not above scaring them.
"So. My name is Karilyna." The way she said it was reminiscent of someone trying to soothingly converse with a rabid animal, ready for it to strike at any moment. Great. Well, at least I don't have to think of her as shrimpy anymore. Besides, yeah, she's small and skinny, but I've seen shorter.
"Good to meet you Karilyna. I'm Phyllis." I set my wand down. It's still in arms-reach, but at least it shows I'm not about to blast her. And if she tries anything, I'll probably have enough time to grab it, not that that would do much. We've more or less reached a deadlock. If we try magic, it'll probably just blow up our dorm room and get us both expelled.
As the next order of business I extract my pocketknife and dump it in my trunk. I considered tossing it to her (closed of course) so she could check it out, but decided against it. I won't stab anyone but who knows what Karilyna'd do, especially if she thinks I'm some sort of murderer. And I really should leave it in the bottom of my trunk. I actually, legitimately, really don't want to leave this place. My mom's not here to bug, so the only person I'll cause problems for is me.
"If it makes you feel any better, I didn't bring any matches." I instantly regret the words. I meant them as a joke, but chances are she'll take it wrong.
"That was a joke, sorry. I don't usually go around cutting things. Actually, I did at home to spite my mom, but I brought the pocketknife here for practical reasons, I swear."
I decide to move off the topic of potentially dangerous items. "Um... okay. So I like flying and stuff. Like on a broomstick. And I grew up in England, so that explains the hint of an accent. I actually don't want to be expelled, so if you could not tell on me that'd be great."

The mystery girl introduces herself to me, at the same time tossing away her wand and pocketknife. Good. At least the slightly psycho girl doesn't want to kill me. Slightly more reassuring. "If it makes you feel any better, I didn't bring any matches," the brunette says, startling me. I start to gulp, just as she hurriedly continues that it was a joke, and her pocketknife was only for practical reasons. I try to keep a straight face, but inside I'm smiling. Although this girl, Phyllis, had originally looked slightly menacing, it turned out she was just like me. I mean, it wasn't like I would consider bringing matches, but it did sound like something I would do.
I did bring markers (unwashable and washable), extra ink that I stole from home, glue, safety pins, and other "craft" materials. Pranking. I'm not exactly the best child, as proven by my choice of things I brought here to Ilvermorny, but I would never go that far. Matches, though, did sound interesting--while it lasted, at least.
Turning back to the girl, I listen as she began to further introduce herself. "'Kay," I said when she finished, "I like yellow. Quidditch is cool, I think. Well, better than classes, that's for sure. Cool, I've always wondered what it would be like to live in England. I was born in Japan and moved to America, but that's a long story..." I trail off. This girl looks like a future friend or even fellow conspirator, but I wasn't sure how much to spill. "Don't worry, I won't tell on you." I'm not a snitch--true, this girl was honestly kind of shady, but I wasn't the kind of person that told on people behind their backs. "Oh, and I hate these robes," I add. It was the truth. Okay, now, what was I supposed to say?
"Um--sorry I assumed you were creepy," I say, looking down and fidgeting with my robe. I hate apologizing, hate admitting I was wrong. But if I want this girl to like me, to be my friend, I had to start somewhere.

I listen to Karilyna's introduction. From what I can tell, she's a lot like me. Likes Quidditch? Check. Not a huge fan of school? Check. Has a long and complicated backstory she'd rather not share? Check, although it could be long in an entirely different sense than mine.
"Thanks," I say with a grin when she promises not to tell on me. There's another thing--we both aren't tattletales.
"Yes. These robes are awful. This school takes after Hogwarts in just about everything but of all things to change they chose the robe color? I'd much prefer black."
I stop my rant. Karilyna's fidgeting with her robes, maybe trying to make them change color. Finally she blurts out that she's sorry. I blink once, twice. Wow, okay. I did not see that coming. It's not that I'm not one for apologies, but you shouldn't have to come clean about something you thought. Maybe she isn't just like me, but I make another mental list of why Karilyna would be an awesome friend and add 'Actually has a conscience' and 'Super nice' to the top.
"No, you're totally fine. I probably would've thought the same thing. But, um, thanks anyways."
It's clear that with that latest deep topic neither of us really knows what to say, so I go for something random to dissolve the tension and hopefully get a laugh.
"So, you got a nickname? Cuz' I'm not saying 'Karilyna' every time, it's too long. If not, I'm just gonna call you Miss Doe-Eyes, okay, because, no offense, whenever I look at them I picture a deer."

Good thing this girl agrees with me. Colored robes are the WORST. And then Phyllis--that's her name, right?--asks me about a nickname. Seriously? Miss Doe-Eyes is the best thing she could come up with. "Um, fine." I say. Honestly, this girl looks like she means business. Like, more than me. Might as well let her call me some stupid nickname and find one for her later.
Glancing at the strange girl, who is beginning to look like a fellow conspirator, I make up my mind. I mean, I gotta get somewhere with this. So I push on. "I like pranking," I start, "I don't know what you like, but I think we could be friends?" I end my statement with a question. Awkward? Yes. But I like getting to the point and just being upfront. Better than hem-ing and ha-ing until I stutter something out.
I already have several ideas for pranks. I mean, being stifled in my own room back at home gave me way too much time. And I have no problem sticking my nose into other people's business or getting out of trouble. I'm way too sneaky for that. Maybe my adoptive parents are just slow, but I'm not afraid to say that I'm pretty sly. "So, what do you think?"

Karilyna doesn't seemed too excited about her nickname, but she doesn't object. And she doesn't give me anything else to work with anyways, so what else am I supposed to call her? Her next few sentences surprise me again a bit, but okay. I like that she's not super wordy. I mean, I'm usually one for a bit longer spiels (okay, more like rants) but it's better than listening to her go in circles trying to make her point. Pranking, huh? Sounds fun. I'm not like the pranking queen or anything, but I've got a few ideas and something like that is right along my alley of fun. Besides, I've got a knack for not getting caught doing questionable things, so we could make a great team.
"Yeah. Friends. I'd like that. And pranking sounds fun. I haven't got any great ideas yet but we'll come up with something I'm sure."
Well, that's over. The girl I was worried about turning me in and getting me expelled or attacking me because she thought I was mental is now officially my friend and we've been talking for like, ten minutes tops. That's probably a stretch even.
"So, what are some of these ideas that I'm just going to assume you have?" Best to start planning now so we can give whoever this school's resident troublemakers are a run for their money.

@Bridget Collins
"Um, ideas?" I jump in right off the bat. Now that this girl--Phyllis--seems like a decent enough person and probably my friend, I have a whole list of ideas to prank people already. It's probably not a good thing, but it's pretty easy for me to just come up with ideas to annoy people. "I'm thinking wrecking someone's robes, short-sheeting beds, messing up trunks, switching trunks, and stuff. Nothing too fancy yet. But don't worry, I'll come up with some grand scheme soon enough."
It was true. Not to brag or anything, but even though I do sound (and look) kind of useless when I list off the most basic pranking ideas ever, I have more tricks up my sleeve than you could imagine. You could even call me the jack-of-all-trades, whatever that is. Also, being my first night and all, I don't exactly want to get expelled from a magical school before I can even learn anything. I mean, beats being back in Phoenix with two paranoid parents. And adopted parents at that.
"So, what do you like to do? Lemme just tell you that I'm kind of annoying, so..." I trail off, a little unsure of what I was about to say. Ah, why can't I stop rambling? Also, I wasn't about to lie--I thought it was better to just tell my probably-future-friend that I was annoying because well, some people don't enjoy the company of others who just poke fun at random things. Hopefully Phyllis would be different, as, well, I wanted to be her friend.

Karilyna, it turns out, does have ideas. A lot of them too. Well, not like a lot a lot, but still plenty to start us off. Although she seems to think they aren't that impressive, I think they're just fine. I mean, sure, the ideas are pretty unoriginal, but we can make it our own, and even if it's been done before doesn't mean it won't still annoy people.
Besides, Miss Doe-Eyes promises to come up with a grand scheme eventually. Who cares if I've got to wait a bit--the best ideas require planning. "Sounds great. And no rush on anything massive yet, because when we do actually do something huge I want to make it as memorable as possible. So future kids will talk about us like we're these legends or something."
"Um... pretty much what I said earlier. Flying, Quidditch. I don't prank a lot, but it's fun. It's not like I have a ton of hobbies or anything, but yeah, I'd say annoying people who I don't like could count. So you being annoying doesn't bug me cuz' it probably will be payback anyways. So yeah." Honestly, there isn't really a ton else I like to do. I wouldn't exactly list being sarcastic and making jokes and hanging out with friends as legitimate hobbies. And her being annoying? No problem.
I can hear the sound of giggling and failingly hushed whispers growing closer from the direction of the door, meaning the other girls in our dormitory are coming back. We can't exactly talk about pranks that may be pulled on them in front of them, so I motion to the door with a nod of my head, hinting that she should probably go back to her bed.
"Goodnight. See you around tomorrow," I whisper. Placing my wand on my nightstand, I pull up my blankets and fake sleep as the other girls come in. My last thought before I actually drift off is a happy one.
I have a friend.

Played as Karilyna Kawahara || @Bridget Collins
Legends? I didn't exactly have the best idea of my legacy here at Ilvermorny, the school of American magical kids, but I had a feeling I was not gonna be remembered in a positive way. I wouldn't mind so much being infamous as long it wasn't for doing something legitimately stupid, like getting expelled or something. I wasn't too keen on being kicked out either, as it wasn't like my adopted parents really wanted me back anyways. They always told me I was annoying, which I can't blame them for. Everyone tells me that.
"Quidditch sounds amazing," I agree. Had I already said that? Honestly, this midnight conversation was dragging on so long I was losing track of time--or maybe I was just tired. Maybe it was just the first day at Ilvermorny, away from home, that had gotten to me. I have to stifle a yawn as I untangle my midlength black hair with my left hand. I should be wide-awake, as I came from an earlier time zone, but jetlag has always messed with my head.
All of a sudden, Phyllis stops, jerking her head towards my bed. I snap back to attention, realizing that the voices, although lowered now, were nearing our dormitory, getting louder along with the not-so-sneaky footsteps. "Got it," I whisper as I dive dramatically under my covers, hurriedly closing my eyes in a serene, sleeping-type look. From what they had been talking about, it was obvious the older girls weren't too smart and wouldn't figure anything out.
As Phyllis fell asleep, the rhythmic breathing adding to the other sleeping girls', I cracked my eyes open. There was no way I would sleep tonight. However tired I was, the adrenaline made it much too hard for me to be able to settle into a state of rest. Anyways, I didn't exactly trust all of these people yet.Karilyna Kawahara leaves thread
