It was an hour before curfew, specifically 21:02. Hailey sat in the grass, staring off into space as the wind blew gently through her hair. A grimace rested on her face but she was only lost in thought, wondering about things.
In her lap lay her trombone. Recently polished, the instrument glowed though there was barely any light now. She cared for it like a first pet, pampering it every time she had nothing better to do.
She called it Sophie, after her grandmother's cat, who passed away years ago. She always spoke of it fondly, though she didn't think anyone was ever listening. But Hailey always did. She decided to honor the feline by naming her brass after it.
Hailey lifted the trombone to her lips but didn't blow at first. She could see the moon high, high above her. It didn't wink or smile. It didn't seem particularly enchanting, like she'd thought. She expected a lot of changes but really everything about the world stayed the same since she discovered she was a witch. It just felt like she'd been blond before but now she could see.
A wave of frustration rushed through her and Hailey blew harshly into the trombone, letting out a crisp note louder than the crickets and the rustling trees and the everything, just
everything. She didn't care if anyone heard. She wasn't looking for attention, she was looking for...she didn't even know anymore.
She hated this feeling, this intense feeling like she was being hit by currents and couldn't escape. Every direction was wrong. There was no direction.
She was flustered.
I wonder if this is how every muggle-born feels... She really hoped she wasn't going crazy. She thought it would be fun, going from simple subjects like maths and reading to things like Defense Against the Dark Arts and History of Magic but it was almost worse. It was a lot to comprehend, having been told her life that magic didn't exist and then told that it was her entire world, that yes, dragons and phoenixes and mermaids and even
giants exist. She would be surprised if
aliens roamed the earth as well.
Hailey rested against the ground and closed her eyes. She straightened and crossed her legs, since she was wearing a skirt. Hugging her instrument close to her, Hailey sighed deeply. She turned her head to the castle, looking at the lights scattered along the great buildings and how beautiful the stars looked around it. Hogwarts was enchanting but often in all the wrong ways.
