Ouch.

Carmillia Snippet peeked in through the classroom door. She had gotten lost on her way to the classroom, but she had predicted this and left early. A few other students were already working, and nobody seemed to notice her. Carmillia was quite content with this and found a cauldron with no one using it. By glancing around, she assumed they were making candles. Carmillia had never made candles, but surely it wasn't that hard? She took a deep breath and instantly recognized the scent of juniper, next to the lavender. She felt inside her robes for some mint leaves she had found on school grounds. She hoped they would make a nice smell. Carmillia had read a book about candle-making once, and knew that she had to dip the thread in the wax multiple times, but she couldn't remember any other details. She had read the book because she was running out of things to read in her small library. She found it quite boring, but as she gazed at the candles now floating around the ceiling, she decided candles were pretty cool. She wondered why hot wax wasn't melting onto the floor, before deducing that it must be some sort of spell. She then wondered why they couldn't use magic to make more candles. Carmillia dropped the thought, deciding that she would learn about that sort of things when classes started. Now to focus on the task at hand.

Ouch.
Millie sprinkled the leaves in and watched as they sunk to the bottom of the cauldron. “Well that won’t work...” she whispered to herself. Using lavender instead, Carmillia squeaked as a drop of wax landed on her thumb. Hoping no one had heard her, Carmillia continued on. She picked up the thick piece of string and dipped it into the melted wax. She pulled it out and watched the liquid drip back into the cauldron. Then she repeated the process. Making candles seemed quite tedious, and Carmillia began to daydream. She remembered her father’s words to her as she left. “Study hard! Stay out of trouble! Write to me as soon as you get there, okay? Remember, you can come home whenever you need to. And make sure those owls aren’t getting bumblefoot!” Carmillia would have rolled her eyes at her father if she didn’t love him so much. Instead, she pecked him on the cheek and scooted onto the train before he could change his mind. Her father was overprotective, but Carmillia knew how he worried, and how lonely he would be without her.

“Ouch!” Carmillia hadn’t been focusing and another drop of wax had splashed onto her forearm. She winced as she flicked the already dried wax off. She had completed two candles by now, the second significantly neater than the first. This time, Carmillia was sure she was unheard, as the classroom had filled up with more students, and chatter had blocked out any other noise. Carmillia went back to work, trying to ignore the irritated spot on her arm. She had so desperately wanted an owl, but her father said she would be too busy with her schoolwork to take care of one.
