Ruthie was stubborn, perhaps more stubborn than she realized as she crossed through the Hogwarts grounds, holding her right hand close to her chest under her robes as if they could provide some kind of makeshift protection. With each step she took away from the Ancient Runes classroom, she felt better, but the pain was still there just under the skin like a wasp sting. Leaning against the wall, she considered her options. 1) Sleep it off. This is probably the route that most people would take and it was the route she would have taken if she had been afflicted by any nature element like a wasp. But this was wax. 2) Go to the hospital wing. That just felt dramatic. She wasn't dying or anything. She just needed a balm or something til the pain subsided. And that was what lead her to the third option. 3) Go find some herbs and make a balm. She'd just worked with herbs while making her faux candle, but that had obviously gone extremely well. She was going to find different herbs.
And that decision was what led her here: walking out to the greenhouses in early evening. She didn't think it would be busy unless a class was letting out, and even then, she didn't care. She'd find her way around and pick up something useful along the way. What was useful she wasn't exactly sure, but maybe someone left a herbology textbook lying around somewhere.
Stepping off the dirt path, she pressed her good hand against the door and let herself in. Quiet it was in this first greenhouse, not that she could see a lot. The glass that encompassed the space dark and foggy, clogged by years of plant life roughing up the panes. Indeed, the vines were tall and thick, climbing up the metal supports they called home. The long central table held box planters of dirt and growing organisms while shelves along the glass walls held the smaller plants and phials of crushed ingredients. In the center, above all this, was a rounded chandelier with little holes from which it could sprinkle water instead of light.
Never having had a class here yet, Ruthie was unsure where to begin. She stepped forward, keeping her hand hidden again and eyes out in front of her as she walked on the right hand side around that central table. Slowly, she began to pick up the phials on the shelf as she walked and hold it close to her eyes to see if it was anything she recognized from her seaside jaunts at home. Or better yet, what had her mum, Claire Greer, used whenever the girls came home with cuts and scraps? Was it Heather or Juniper? Until her memory clicked in, she would just be staring at plants and reading labels, hoping for something like 'good for burns.' Somehow, she doubted that might exist, she kept at it, picking up the pace with each bottle.
That is, until a vine wrapped around a column interrupted the shelving. As she was stepping forward, she stretched for the next bottle, a pinkish ornate glass piece with greenery inside. But as she did so, her foot knocked into a vine on the floor she hadn't seen, but she broke the fall by grabbing onto the adjoining shelf with her bad hand. "Merlin's beard," she said as she regained her steadiness and grabbed the phial, hoping it was worth the trouble. Unstoppering it, she held it up to the light, the limited light that there was in the greenhouse, and tried to make out what might be inside. Finding remedial herbs alone was more work than the Ravenclaw had realized, but she wasn't about to give up and walk all the way back to the castle to sleep it off.

♦♦♦Julie was beginning to believe that her feet would never stand still on the ground long enough to really feel that the earth still lay beneath them. Restlessness paired in a dueling dance with unfathomable curiosity and drove her time and time again from places that were familiar, fostering a need to know everything. A feat that was statistically impossible, even if she managed all seven years searching every single day for something new and fascinating she doubted she'd be able to discover all there was at the school. Still, she smiled as she wound a familiar path down the steps from the entrance hall with a hopping gate and a hum in her heart, she would try. The cooling air hit her cheeks and neck, and she took in a deep satisfying breath of it, invigorating her already perpetually energetic body to take the steps two at a time.
There's a tree that moves an' creaks all on its own
A mistake in the making. The back end of her trainer caught the front of the final step and slid down, causing her already questionable balance to go off kilter and send her weight backwards. She landed on her buttocks with her melodious hum keening to a small sharp squeak, her legs sprawling out in front of her as she winced. "Well done ya dozy kitten." She grumbled good-naturedly to herself, repeating the words her mother would often grant her whenever she caught the bad end of her luck-ness monster, leaning back a bit to let the pain fade before scrambling back up and heading further into the grounds. Her trainers lead her towards the greenhouses, her curiosity about the monstrously scary plants meant to be housed in some of the restricted glass buildings making her pace fast but measured. She never imagined how a plant could be seen as scary, and she simply wanted to peek in the hazy windows to see if she could glimpse one or two, not daring to break a rule by actually going inside one. Morally speaking, Julie always wanted to do what she knew was right, but she was also a philomath, and that intense love of learning would drive her to the edges of what others would consider good manners.
The dwindling sunlight brought her closer to the metal and glass buildings, catching on her deep blue long-sleeve that still smelled of myrrh, and her now dusty jeans turning them both a darker shade of almost purple in the light. The rays shone through the dingy panes, and she pressed her face up to the outside of the closest building to peek inside, seeing the reaching vines and obscure flora growing from a menagerie of planters and soils. It was fascinating and she bounced from pane to pane trying to catch profile views of every kind and sort of plant in the first house to see if anything looked scary. Finding nothing of the sort, most of the internal inhabitants being the leafy tops, she moved on to the next building with a smile fixed on her face. This time however the interesting being inside was not some sort of carnivorous plant, but a human girl browsing the shelving of the dimly lit hothouse, and promptly tripping over a root. Worry etching over her features, Julie bolted around the side of the building to the door, hopping inside without much ceremony. "Ye alright?" She asked, walking over toward her and only then noticing the girl's wrapped hand, her blue yes roving the haphazard bandage and then returning to the blonde girl's face. "Did ye get bitten or sommat?" For the time being she'd forgotten her manners of introduction, a slight worry line creasing her forehead as she stopped a few feet from the other.
Do ye think for the ball it'd like a suit or a gown?

Squinting, she was trying to sort out what the pink bottle might hold inside--hopefully something useful. The inside was green with little spots of white from what she could tell. Holding it up to her nostrils, she drunk in the scent: sort of tart and acute. By the colors, she could recall two things her mum would pick up that had that kind of white flowering: Chamomile and Feverfew. Both had medicinal qualities, but she couldn't remember the differences and she definitely couldn't tell them apart, especially now while she was a little preoccupied with the pain.
Ruthie was about to stuff the bottle into her pocket in case when she heard a voice from behind her ask if she was alright. A bit startled, the Ravenclaw fumbled with the glass before turning her head, feeling her face flush at the prospect of being caught by a professor. There was a rule she vaguely recalled reading somewhere that being in the greenhouses after dark was not exactly allowed, and with her search not yet complete, she could be pushing towards darkness. But the person who stood by the door was not a professor. Instead, it was a girl, one who looked close to her age and who appeared friendly enough. For a fleeting moment, Ruthie wondered what she was doing here--a burn seemed legitimate, what was her excuse--but it didn't matter. It mattered, instead, that she was helpful. "Almost," Ruthie said, extending the phial in front of her new companion, "Smell this." It was brazen to trust someone she just met, but she didn't really have a choice. Navigating all these specimens, identifying them, and crushing them into a balm was a lot of work when you only had one fully functional hand.
As she waited for the girl's appraisal of the plant, she noticed her step in closer and eye her bad hand. At first, she brushed her robe over it, but the sleeve soon fell away to reveal this minor monstrosity. Swollen all over and with purple patches, the hand was most affected between the thumb and index finger, where she had been holding the wax. Some of the wax residue even managed to tag onto her wrist and the inside of her robe sleeve. As her breath quickened, she realized she'd have to come out with it. She'd have to tell her, this girl she hardly knew and yet in a moment who had been given more of her trust than anyone else she'd encountered at Hogwarts yet.
It was just then, in that realization of vulnerability, when the other girl breached the question. "It's a burn," Ruthie explained, raising her hand for the girl to see, "a wax burn. I was helping make candles for the Ancient Runes classroom and, em, I'm not very good with wax or cauldrons..." Her voice trailed off after she'd relayed what she felt was the necessary information. Looking down at her hand she felt it resembled the color of a doxy's wing--or at least of the illustrations in the books her mother had used to teach the girls of the magical world.
Gosh, how great it would have been to have had her mother here; she'd know what to do. Her mother would know what was in that bottle, know if it was harmful or helpful. "What do you smell?" She beckoned to her new companion, praying a second opinion would aid her in finding some kind of soothing ingredient. If she seemed rude or impatient, it wasn't intentional; it was the result of her current condition. It was a condition that stopped her from fully explaining why she needed to identify the contents, why she was ravaging in here so unhinged, or even who she was. Instead, tired and occasionally wincing if she accidentally rubbed the burned hand against the shelving, her eyes glistened in this low light as she stated at this girl, waiting for her assessment. Waiting, though she was reluctant to verbally admit it, for help.

♦♦♦The entire idea of finding some sort of scary sentient plantlife that had the capability to do some wacky things was abolished from her mind as she saw the other girl in such a state. She seemed impatient, though Julie did not in the slightest find that offensive or frustrating, her brain immediately triggering to the help them with whatever you can mode. When the girl proffered the bottle, the Hufflepuff wasted no time in dipping her head down a little, eyeing the green and white flowered plant that was oddly familiar to her. She inhaled with her mouth slightly opened, remembering something Mum had taught her about using your tastebuds and your nose when you were trying to identify something. "Tha's Feverfew there." She spoke assuredly, the tangy and sharp scent so much more distinct than its twin by appearance Chamomile, which was appley and much much sweeter. "S'good for headaches, but I doubt yer hand's got a noggin." This she said with a joviality, a wide and encouraging smile on her face as she attempted to sort in some levity to the girl's predicament.
Her partner, the wind is trussed all in flowy lines
The girl attempted to hide the hand, and Julie's head cocked to the side with a quizzical expression working its way through, but failed and the robe fell away from it and showcased the issue in glaring reality. A low whistle left Julie's lips as she stepped closer to the girl, stopping at about a foot away and forgetting completely about personal space bubbles, her face now fully and intensely attentive. Blue eyes tore away from the garrish sight of what must be absolutely and dreafully painful to seek into the girl's own ocean eyes, listening raptly to the explanation of what kind of burn this was. "Musta been a curse on the door-frame. I was up there a while ago, fell right on me face as I walked in the room. I'm sorry this happened, I'm gonna help alrigh'?" She attempted to plant an encouraging pat to the girl's shoulder before her eyes were cast around the shelving for two distinctive plants that were the only thing she could think of. She looked at the ground and planted her feet on the vines that covered the floor, and had tripped up the girl she was now hell bent on helping, using it to give her a few extra inches of height to check the shelves.
The last time she had needed to sort out herbal remedies had been on the one camping trip she and her Mum had been able to go on. It had been her 10th birthday and her Mum had earned an additional stipend as part of a contest at the place where she worked, and utilizing some well-earned days off they'd gone up into the forests far away from Inverness to try their hand at camping. Dad had refused to go, but Julie had scrounged through all his old fishing gear and survival books from a time back when he bothered to care about actually accomplishing things, and had read the book on useful plants and remedies they were useful for on the drive to their camping spot. She didn't have some sort of amazing memory, but on the second day her Mum had burned her hand by pouring boiling water over the back of it, and the scramble to sort out a poultice from the book had been ingrained in her brain from the panic of wanting to help her. It was definitely going to pay off today.
She looked down at the girl, a reassuring smile working through the worry on her face as she remembered that half the battle was keeping the injured from thinking about their pain. "What we need is Lavender and Aloe, and honey but I dinnae think they have honey out here." Her eyes went back to the litany of bottles and clinking noises accompanied her hands as she pawed around the shelves. "Wha's yer name? I'm Julie!" Again, trying to distract the wounded party from her own pain, but also curious to get to know the girl, more clinking happening as she found a bottle with what could be lavender towards the back of the shelf. Surprisingly she wasn't toppling the whole thing over, and with an excited whoop, she pulled the bottle of purple flowers to her, unstoppered it and inhaled. Definitely Lavender.
What to pair? Thought the Tree.

Ruthie was impatient. It wasn't a natural trait she held, but rather a free trait created through the current experience and environment. Her eyes widened and her breath quickened as her companion held the bottle to her nose and sniffed. The diagnosis: Feverfew. Ruthie's eyelids lowed into a somber blink, as she tried to recall what the herb was exactly good for. Headaches, the brunette revealed with a smile on her face and sharp highland accent from the few words she spoke. The prospect of being the company of a fellow countrywoman brought Ruthie a reprieve of calm. If there was anyone should felt she could trust, it would be a fellow Scot.
A soft whistle seemed to flow into the greenhouse when her companion caught a glimpse of Ruthie's hand. Surprise, perhaps, was what her companion was experiencing. Was it that bad? That shocking? The Ravenclaw had had her fair share of scraps and bruises while exploring Skye and the small fishing village her family lived in, but never had she had an experience with wax.
Her companion suggested a cursed door frame and maybe there was one. Ruthie nodded lightly, thinking that idea was a much nicer one than her not being able to control the wax in a cauldron on her own. "Alright," she replied, as her rescuer stepped up on the planets to reach the shelf above. Clearly, she was better at identifying plant life that Ruthie had been. "How do you know so much about plants? Are you reading ahead in Herbology or something?" she asked, curious about her helper's origins. If she had by some stroke of luck come into a gifted student, she was grateful. Or if she had just enjoyed exploring, as Ruthie often did, that would be a welcome alliance too for surely she would have some experience of getting out of sticky situations.
As the other girl went looking for ingredients, a feeling of helplessness began to creep in across Ruthie's skin. And she didn't like it. Coming all the way out her on her own had been an act of anything but helplessness, and she struggled mentally to find the place between helping oneself and letting aid come to assist her. Leaning against the middle table, she wrapped her fingers around the edge. Even simply bending it didn't sit particularly well with her right hand and she pulled it away and back in front of her body.
Lavender and aloe the other girl searched for while commenting that honey would also be useful, but unlikely to find in the greenhouses. "I'll look, maybe there's a bottle amongst all of this..." she searched for a word to describe the planters that took up the majority of the central table, "I'll just look." Turning away from her partner in this minor crisis, she looked across the table, which seemed large than when she had just been focusing on the shelving. The planters were large and wooden, not well-kept, but kept enough. They seemed to be home to variety of different living creatures: some were flowering, some seemed to moving despite the still air, and some were young vines like those on the floor. Amongst the planters were occasionally an abandoned garden tool like a hand shovel or a trowel. She prayed for an abandoned bottle of honey. Ruthie would have to keep a sharp eye and perhaps walk around the table, which she started to do, meandering slowly as she heard her companion introduce herself from where she stood, examining bottles.
"Ruth," the Scottish girl replied, slightly above speaking level to account for the clinking of glass, "But my friends call me 'Ruthie.'" She turned to face the girl as she said that, offering Julie a light smile as a way of thanking her for her efforts. She didn't have to stay. She probably shouldn't have stayed. But what ever propelled her to--from pity to straight-up kindness--Ruthie was grateful for it. With her head turned, she noticed the girl smelling one of the phials. "Anything?" she asked.

♦♦♦The taller girl was used to having to navigate things like this it was more her element than she'd had in quite a long time, her need to help pushing her brain into overdrive and definitely interrupting her ability to carry on a proper conversation through her focus. "How do you know so much about plants? Are you reading ahead in Herbology or something?" Julie grinned at this, getting a better handle on the familiar accent and shaking her head, leaning back to look at the other girl. "Nah, I nicked a survival journal from me dad before I went campin' with Mum and she got 'erself a bad burn. ." She answered with a slightly sheepish tint to her smile, rooting back around to see if there was any aloe to pair with the lavender. Her eyes narrowed at the back of the shelf as she saw specimens of all sorts and varieties that were far and beyond the capabilities of the small handbook that was the source of her primary understanding of plants. She blinked a few times, finding none of the large wide leaves with spikes that she was searching for, she turned to look at the blonde girl.
On it donned a fine dress
"I'll look, maybe there's a bottle amongst all of this... I'll just look."
Julie cocked her head to the side, nodding and renewing her grin in full force to reassure her countrywoman on her directive. "Aye, have ya seen Aloe before?" She asked, curious about the other's experience and worried about the growing pain that she assumed was occurring in the burned hand. If she couldn't find Aloe she worried about what to do, as the salve she knew required Aloe, Lavender, and honey to function properly and disinfect the wound. If it was bad perhaps it was a trip to the hospital wing in the waiting, but as the smaller girl was here rather than up there odds were she wanted to avoid the hospital beds. Julie didn't blame her as a slight shudder ran through her body at the mere thought of a place that looked anything like a hospital, though she was sure that Hogwart's on ward was nothing like the one she'd been in during her grandmother's failing health. The pristine walls and the antiseptic smell always gave the girl the chills, and wearing those gowns? Out of the question!
She blinked back to reality, concluding her search of the upper shelf and navigating down the roots with all the poise her mother would be absolutely flabbergasted to learn she had. Her trainers didn't even squeak as they hit the peaty floor of the greenhouse with extra gusto, carrying the Hufflepuff towards the other girl and the planters there. A thought crossed her mind with worry, what if they didn't have any aloe? "Ruth, But my friends call me 'Ruthie.'" Julie beamed, nodding her head in the affirmative and grinning like she'd just been told the happiest news in the world. "Hope its nae presumptuous if I say its a pleasure ta meet ya Ruthie!" She replied, her nose scrunching as her expression brightened and she flashed the girl a soft wink. At the other's questioning word, Julie proffered the bottle of lavender with a light but graceful flourish, handing it over to her stoppered and safe. "Lavender, one part o'a three part salve. Jus' need ta find Aloe to mix it with so it heals the burn. Honey's good for healin' and disinfectant but I dinnae if there is any, but if we can find the aloe should do well enough!" She said, joining Ruthie near the potted plants and looking for the customary tall spiky leaves indicative of the plant she sought. "Hope ya don't mind me askin', but why no hospital wing?" This question was asked as her head was behind a rather leafy looking plant that had big enough protrusions to hide the sheepish expression on her face, curiosity winning out over manners though she worried it was an overstep.
Away it sashayed with the wind

Herb Hunting
Herb hunting was more exhausting than Ruthie expected it to be. At home, the knotgrass poking out of the pebbles seemed so commonplace, she didn’t need to think about collecting at all. How lovely it would be to be out on the fishing village shores again.
Her companion seemed to also be outdoorsy in some respect if she had had an encounter with a survival journal before the age of 11. That was good. If after all this, she could have a friend with whom she had something in common, that would be nice. Might prevent future run-ins through the greenhouses alone. Camping did suggest the outdoors were a reprieve, not a way of living. “Rotten luck,” Ruthie replied, considering the pain that Julie’s mother must have endured on this camping trip. Funny how a simple injury can turn a fun adventure into something much more urgent and dangerous. “And lavender and aloe fixed it, then?” she asked somewhat rhetorically. In her head, she was trying to recall if her own mother had ever had an incident like that. As a botanist, Claire must have had some unfortunate run-ins of her own, even if the girls were too young to understand.
As she turned back to the table, she looked around and heard the worrying question about recognizing aloe beyond a label. "In a bottle,” she admitted, “My mum’s a botanist so the house was always full of plants, mostly local to the Fife coast.” It was one of her favorite things: wandering about her mother’s study, picking up bottle after bottle and twirling the samples in the light. It was so fascinating that she often snuck in at night just to catch a glimpse of the shinning colors. She tried to recall the bottles of aloe. Being from Sudan and similar regions, it was something her mother had imported because it was a common ingredient in salves and potions. It was a sort of spiked plant, green with light speckles. The vibrancy of the green depended on the bottle it was in. It wasn’t exactly an uncommon description, but she felt confident enough she’d be able to get it if it was there.
A large sigh escaped her lips as Julie confirmed that she had, in fact, found Lavender. That was a third of the way there and a major step forward. “Thank Merlin,” she said as a dull pain ran through her hand. What had once been sharp was calming, if only just. Maybe time was part of this healing process after all. As she pulled her robe sleeve back over her hand as she turned her attention back to the table, she heard Julie ask about her decision not to seek formal help. “Isn’t the hospital wing just for serious things?” she answered the question with a question, “Besides, it’s just kind of embarrassing. Making a candle shouldn’t be hard.” She smiled lightly as if to convey she didn’t want this information out into fold. Ruth ‘Wax-Burn’ Greer did not sound like a nickname she wanted following her around for the rest of her first year at Hogwarts.
She looked briefly over at Julie, but her head was behind a plant. All the better as it cut out personal concerns. Ruthie had to focus on the planters in front of her. Some of them sat quite tightly next to one another. As she walked around, she noticed a glimmer of glass poking out among the planters. Leaning against the table edge, she took her good hand and extended it out and reached for the glass. Pulling it out, she found something green, but flowering. But as she’d grabbed, she’d unknowingly knocked another bottle in her direction. It was smaller and more compact, but the insides—green, spotted, and pointy—looked right. “I think we might be in luck,” she said as she un-stoppered the bottle, assuming the leaves would have to crushed in order to be used in the salve. Not quite a potioneer yet, she eagerly awaited her companion's instructions.
