Alfie gets his messy brown hair from his muggle father Solomon, a professor of Electrical Engineering at Cambridge, and his light green eyes from his muggle-born witch mother, Olivia. He likes to think that the mole under his left eye is all him, though.
While his father is a normal muggle, his mother is a first-generation witch born to a muggle couple. Olivia Robinson, née Smith graduated Hogwarts 13 years back and proceeded to embrace her muggle heritage by attending a muggle institute of higher education, University of Cambridge, where she met Alfie's father Solomon. After graduation, Solomon pursued a career in academia while his wife went on to become an Inspector in the Ministry of Magic's Department of Magical Education.
Magic was initially kept a secret from Alfie, his parents didn't want to break his heart by telling him that magic was real and that he was a wizard, only for his magic to never show up, particularly since he showed no signs of accidental magic for the first ten years of his life. Recognizing the boy's curious mind and his love of the natural sciences early on, his parents focused on giving him a good education and a normal childhood in the city of Cambridge.
It came as a surprise to all three Robinsons when upon accidentally touching an uninsulated component in one of Solomon's pet projects, Alfie's hand glowed like a flashlight and the electric components completely short-circuited. After calming their hysterical son down, his parents revealed to him his true nature, to much delight.
Alfie is inquisitive and curious, even for an eleven-year-old. His sharp mind took well to the STEM curricula of his muggle school, while his sense of adventure, typical to most young boys, has brought him trouble again and again. Although he doesn't like to admit it, his academic success can be partially explained by his hatred of ignorance. He dislikes both being ignorant about something and seeming ignorant to others.
It was that same sense of adventure that tipped the balance towards leaving his old life behind and embracing a new identity at Hogwarts.
