Exploring Plant life
Taking place on August 3rd
Santario woke up this morning and decided to tour the parts of the gardens and greenhouses that were available to them during the camp. She knew she would be spending a lot of time there with herbology and she wanted to have the layouts memorized before the first class if she could. So with that she got dressed in her muggle clothes simple black jeans with a few well work holes in them, a grey shirt, and her over jacket. She would be leaving her camera bag in her cabin not feeling the need to bring it with her when she just planned on getting her hands dirty.
As she left the cabin and made her way over to the gardens, she pulled her hair back into a French braid not wanting it to get in her way while she inspected the plants that grew on the grounds. It was a beautiful day sunny but not to hot with a gentle breeze that kept you cool. When she arrived, she marveled at how much bigger it was than her own garden at home. It was then that her lips spread into a large smile and she started slowly walking through the plants every once in a while reaching out and gently touching the leaves of one here and there. She would stop and take note of a plant that she did not have in her garden looking over how they were planted and if this was a heavy morning, afternoon, or evening sun plant.
You couldn’t be a potions master if you didn’t understand your ingredients or the how, when, where, and why of them. Those who thought differently were ignorant and would never succeed in the field. So she made it one of her missions to know everything and anything she could about the ingredients that she worked with. Really it was the same with her cooking know your ingredients and they would never let you down.

Exploring Plant life
Jake hadn't been having a very good time at camp.
He had spent most of the first nights crying and homesick, and the days sticking as close to Grace Foster's side as he could. But she liked to play and explore, and he was still thinking about how new and scary and different everything was. It was only today that he had finally dared to venture outside of his comfort zone - all by himself too. The mysterious castle still loomed in the distance, but he wouldn't be going there for a whole month - which felt like a very long time to the ten-year-old boy. Instead he could only explore the grounds.
The target of his exploration journey today was the greenhouse and the gardens. The gardens sounded nice...Jake liked plants and nature, and it seemed like a safe place to be. Nothing bad ever happened in gardens - usually it was a place that not even evil things could touch. Being alone wasn't so fun, but he made the most of it, taking his sketch book. He would find a nice tree to sit under, and then he could draw some of the things that he'd seen so far. Drawing had always been a soothing task for Jake.
When he got there he was so amazed by the things that he was seeing (Some of this stuff was clearly wizard plants - magical fantastical things that stunned him) that he barely even noticed he wasn't alone until he practically bumped into someone.
The boy looked up at the much taller girl, and suddenly felt his mouth close tightly. "U-um h-hi....s-s-sorry...." he mumbled. "I um...I d-didn't mean to...um...I mean...I was just walkin'," he said softly, fidgeting uncomfortably and staring back down at his feet.

Santario had become aware of the boy when he entered but she had just paid him no mind and figured that if she just went on her way then he would go on this. She was here for the plants and to get away from people however as she was inspecting the soil to see if she could tell if anything was added to this particular plant or not she noticed the boy got close too close and she side stepped to avoid him bumping into her even though he seemed to stop himself just fine. At first, she turned her piercing blue eyes onto the boy but then he started stuttering an apology and any anger that she harbored over the almost bump went away.
“Don’t even worry about it.” A voice quiet and soft as a feather drifting across a breeze. “It’s easy to get lost in the plants. It’s peaceful here.” She noted his sketch book and how short he was, and how he stared at his feet. It seemed this boy was just as antisocial as she was but his was paired with fear that was not something she related with because she wasn’t afraid of social interaction, she just found it extremely hard to relate. “So uh, you like to draw?” She asked in a way that was less like a peer to peer question and more of almost an older kid to a child realistically it was just her not having great conversationalist skills with people her own age.
She at this point bent back down to continue to examine the soil that she had been looking at before trying to once again determine if they had used any other fertilizer or plant food on it.

Exploring Plant life
When the girl first spun around to look at him with fiery blue eyes, Jake almost let out a frightened whimper, but as he tried his best to say sorry, she seemed to change. Her voice became quiet and she told him not to worry about it. But how could he not...? He had seen her eyes before.
She said it was easy to get lost in the plants, and that was true...he hadn't even seen her. Then, she must have noticed his sketch book, because she asked him if he liked to draw. Nervously, slowly, Jake nodded his head, and clutched his book a little tighter. Some boys had asked him that at the park once. Asked Jake if he liked to draw, and then when he said yes, they had taken his drawing from his hands, ripped the drawings out and threw them in the mud. Jake had cried. They had said the question different from how she had, but he couldn't forget her eyes...and the way she'd looked at him. Until he knew more, the fear didn't leave his own dark brown eyes. His mouth for the moment remained closed. But he kinda thought the older kid (or, at least Jake thought she was older, since she was much bigger than he was and seemed to be) wanted him to answer.
"Um...y-yes..." the little boy said softly. "Um, I...I do it a lot..." It was almost hard to hear him, but in the peaceful garden his voice carried well enough. "I...I thought I c-could find a tree to sit by, and then I could try an' draw the garden...." he explained shakily, his heart beating quickly.

Santario observed the short boy who seemed terrified by her though she had not meant to do so that was just her face. Her eyes were also sharp and calculating as if she were trying to figure out the where, when, and why of every person she met; which she was. “It’s good to have a skill. I can’t draw to save my life. Gardening, cooking, potions, and photography are my passions, so I understand that creative spark.” She decided that she would not be able to tell what was in this soil before school started, she would just have to wait until she met the Herbology professor to find out their tricks of the trade.
She stood up straight and looked back at the boy again before motioning just to the right of them. “That hill there has a great view of the gardens because it gets the green houses behind it.” She offered the suggestion whether the boy decided to take it out not as of no consequence to her. “My name is Santario by the way.” She offered as she now started to look at a different plant something she had not seen before. She was curious as to what this plant was that she didn’t have in her garden at home. She started to mentally note the physical details of the plant with it’s blue green leaves and stark purple veins it truly was beautiful.

Jake listened to her skills. Some of them he understood, but one of them was definitely magic. He had read about potions in books, but the only kinds of potions that they had in real life was medicine. He wondered then if it was true - that witches and wizards made potions in cauldrons with black cats watching nearby. If he wanted to learn more about potions, she probably knew about them...and he half wanted to ask...but shyness won out in the end and Jake stayed quiet. He wasn't sure what to say.
Instead he watched as she pointed out a nice spot for viewing the garden. Was she giving him a place he could go to draw...? It was nice of her, and that surprised him...she had seemed scary at first...maybe she wasn't so bad after all? Then she introduced herself, and this was something Jake actually knew how to respond to, so he rushed to do so.
"Um...Jake..." he mumbled, blushing once again. "I-I mean...I'm Jake. Jake Morris."
There. He had introduced himself. As the girl began to study the plants (therefore looking away from him) it was easier for him to feel a little safer, and the boy dared approach a little more, because the plant she was staring at was absolutely beautiful and the colors had caught his eye. "What kinda plant is that?" he asked her, captivated.

As he introduced himself, he would be able to see a smalls mile play at the corners of her lips if he were looking at her face. “It is a pleasure to meet you, Jake.” She almost never stated her surname unless speaking to a professor. Her first name was so unique it would be rare to bump into someone who had something that similar that it would matter. Come to think of it she didn’t even know what her name derived from. She assumed it must be something with luck because her mother always called her, her lucky little bean, not that she would admit that to anyone here that she knew.
When he asked her about the plant she stared at it for a moment longer before looking at him. “Well to my best guess it might be a Flutterby Bush. Watch how it quivers when my hand gets near it.” She moved her hand closer to one of the colorful sprouts that would eventually bloom in some many years. “They only bloom once a century and if we are lucky this one will while we are at school. If not then we get to admire their beautiful colored sprouts.” Looking back at Jake again if he looked at her he would notice that those normally sharp sapphire eyes no longer held any trace of annoyance, but maybe even some joy. She enjoyed plants and finding her in the gardens or near plants was one place to find her in a great mood.
“So, how are you liking summer camp so far?” She inquired she herself had only been there a couple of weeks and she still mainly kept to herself. She didn’t meet a lot of other first years there and she was more or less ignored by the older students. She wondered if it was because they didn’t know where her allegiance lied; which house did she hold her heart in. Although to her it didn’t matter much she viewed loyalty in a much different way than everyone else seemed to.

Jake nodded his head slowly. Was it really a pleasure to meet him...? No kid had ever said that to him before - not even Grace had said that - and he didn't know how to respond to it. "Um...th-thank you," he answered awkwardly. Luckily, they were soon distracted by one of the most amazing plants Jake had ever seen.
The flutterby was its name, and it was fitting since it sounded a lot like butterfly - a colorful insect. "What do they look like when they bloom...?" he asked in spite of himself, still fascinated by the plant. After all, if that was what they looked like when they'd merely sprouted, then they must look absolutely amazing when they bloomed. He wondered if Santario knew the answer, and if she did, if she would tell him.
Jake blushed, not sure how to answer her next question. "I...I don't know..." he mumbled sadly, looking down at the ground. He couldn't say anything else...if he did, she might laugh at him. He knew that everybody ELSE was enjoying camp. Grace was having a great time it seemed like. Sometimes when he was with her he even did too, but nothing could be worth the pain every night when he realized he wasn't inside of his own bed, and was so far from his parents and a hug and kiss goodnight. There couldn't be anything in the world that was worth that...even if he had found some new feelings with Grace as well - feelings the socially-isolated boy had never felt before - like the joy of laughing with another kid. "It...it had some good parts..." he answered. "I think I made a friend..." he mumbled. H didn't know why he was talking so much. Maybe because if he said the good parts, he wouldn't have to say the bad parts, but unfortunately Jake's sadness reached his eyes.

San had never actually had the privilege of seeing one in full bloom before, in fact, this was the furthest along she had ever seen one in general. “Unfortunately I do not know. I’ve never had the privilege however I would have to assume they are very beautiful because some people will buy them to plant at weddings and such. I assume there must be some master gardener somewhere who’s family just cultivates them.” It is what would make sense to her and if she had known what they truly looked like she definitely would have told him she had no reason not to.
She noted the flush spread across his cheeks though she was not sure the reason why. His stammering started to pick up a little again it had started to slow down but now it seemed like he was hiding something. It truly was not her business if he wanted to skim over the things that made him sad by stating that there were good parts. Sadness plagued his eyes and she knew he was skimming the truth but she didn’t count it as lying. “Friends are always good, and you don’t have to speak about the sad parts if you don’t want to. Just know that you can.” San was complex her personality changed depending on who she was interacting with someone like Jake brought out the kinder and more caring side in her.
He reminded her of the kids she used to visit at St. Mungos when her mother took her to work with her. Therefore although she was still a bit formal, she didn’t act so closed up. Around other people, she could be a bit more closed and colder depending on what was happening. “I’m a first-year too. It’s not easy being away from your family.” Especially when it was all you had.

Jake nodded his head when she said that he could talk about the sad bits if he wanted to. He wasn't ready to say anything else yet...he didn't know this girl, even though she seemed like she was nice. She was right though...having friends WAS nice. He didn't know if he really had one or not yet, but whatever he did have with Grace was something he had never experienced before. It was nice having somebody else to talk to - another kid. He had even managed to talk to Santario which was more than he had managed to do with others before he had arrived at camp. Maybe one day he would even be able to talk about when he was feeling sad, but for now he didn't want to risk crying and he knew that if he talked about it he just might.
It was hard though when she talked about being away from family.
Jake looked down at the ground. "Yeah. I never went away before," he admitted shyly. Even though he didn't say much his voice revealed just how hard it had been for him. He looked up again and met Santario's eyes and then felt suddenly embarrassed. "I...um...I'm gonna go draw." he said, looking up towards the area that she had directed him to. If she was right, he would have a nice spot to spend the afternoon. Their conversation had been going for a while and he wasn't quite ready to talk to a stranger for so long. He was happy that she had told him a nice spot though and he didn't want to forget his manners. "Um, th-thank you. For...showing me where to go."
