James tried to wiped away his tears as he sniffled through the long corridors on his way up to the Ravenclaw Common Room to meet up with Lark. He didn't want the other students to see him in this state but he couldn't help the hot anger welling up inside him.
There'd been a lot of awful things to learn at this school so far. All this about Dark Lords, and muggle haters, killing curses and wizard slurs. It was a lot to take in.
And then there was Savannah and her awful friend. He felt like he hadn't represented himself well in that library. He still felt strongly about the whole Statute of Secrecy issue and he'd felt like Tatiana hadn't helped his case much. He wondered if she was pure blood. At least Maggie had been kind to him... not all Gryffindors seemed to be quite as unpalatable as Savannah.
He stopped for a moment trying to collect himself but the dam broke and he felt the rush of tears erupt again, as he began to blubber loudly. Brilliant. What a total weirdo.
He leaned up against a wall and sat down on the hard stone, tucking his knees under his chin, unable, now to control the tears any longer.
A portrait of a Centaur laughed at him from across the hall. "Yes! Cry in your defeat, traitor! You have insulted the Centaur King and you will suffer for you crimes!"
"Oh... shut up!" James snapped at the portrait as a high-pitched *twing* signaled an onslaught of painted arrows. One of which landed in the portrait of a knight who loudly retorted with a "Do you mind!?"

Amelia wasn't one to wander new places by herself often, but as the week progressed she found herself doing it more than once. She had taken almost every chance she could to either spend her time in the library or out wandering the courtyard, doing her best to make friends along the way. However, today made something about her venture different. You see, she had already managed to get herself lost. She knew she was somewhere near the library but other than that, she truly didn't know where she was. Not that it bothered her, really. She knew she would find her way back to the commons room at some point, but the books in her hands were really starting to toll on her.
So was something else, but she didn't want to touch on that right now. So instead, she smiled brightly and quietly made her way down the mostly empty corridor. Soon enough, she began to hear voices. It seemed like friendly banter at first, but the closer she got she realized it was quite the opposite. She found herself standing in a corridor she hadn't been through before; paintings covered every square inch of the place, some reaching from the ceiling to the floor, others covering a small space on the wall.
"Yes! Cry in defeat, traitor! Yo have insulted the Centaur King and you will suffer for your crimes!"
Her gaze flit to the centaur painted on the wall and she frowned softly, wondering just who he was talking to before her eyes flit to a figure sitting nearby. She nearly dropper her books from being so startled but took the moment to regain herself and assess the situation. The boy sitting nearby was obviously distraught, which immediately bothered her. Surely the paintings knew better than to harass students?
"Oh... shut up!"
She nearly flinched at the sound of his voice but composed herself long enough to look up at the Centaur King, her eyes narrowing ever so slightly. She wasn't sure why, but she felt the need to defend the boy sitting nearby,"You should be ashamed of yourself! A King! Picking on a student. What would the others think of your behavior!"
The Centaur opened his mouth to say something but she glowered at him, smiling to herself when he fell quiet. She sighed and turned her back to him before she carefully made her way over to the boy, biting her lower lip before she gently sat next to him,"Are... are you okay?" She asked softly, unsure of what to do or say, but seeing another student like this nearly broke her heart.

James laughed through his tears as the girl scolded the portrait. And stood slowly, dusting himself off.@Amelia Boux (Sorry for the late reply)
"No- um- I'm not really ok," he said softly, "But it's got nothing to do with him... he's more an annoyance really."
James gestured to the portrait and waved a hand at it dismissively.
"Let's do this later Your Majesty... meet me in the portrait of the Owl in the hallway outside the Ravenclaw Common Room and we'll talk"
The Centaur glowered at the boy but nodded in frustrated acceptance and disappeared down the hallway.
He met the girl's kind eyes and something inside him wanted to tell her everything. He paused for a moment.
"It's just..." he walked up to the large, ancient windows and stared out across the gloomy Scottish highlands, "I found out today... about that war. The wizarding war, and Harry Potter. I learnt about the killing curse and that there are some Wizards that just hate muggleborns and muggles too. I learnt that there's a- word.... a really horrible word for us, about our blood. And I read this book that said that the war happened in London.... and like my Dad was there when it happened and he could have died. And then I was talking about it to this Gryffindor girl in the Library, and she just starts yelling at me, telling me that all muggles are ignorant and dangerous... that they'd destroy the wizarding world. And I couldn't help but think about my Mum and Dad and all my friends back home, how they'd feel if only they new what some wizards here think about them, you know?"
He paused, and realized he'd completely bombarded this stranger with a description of his terrible day.
"You're not- you don't feel like that do you?" he asked, "Do you think I deserve to be hated because my Mum and Dad can't do magic?"

Amelia watched the interaction with the boy and the Centaur closely, her eyes alight with a soft glint of anger, but when he told her that he wasn't the source of his problems, but it was a Gryffindor girl, surprise flit across her features. She hadn't really met anyone from the house yet, but hearing something so awful from this boy made something stir in the pit of her stomach, especially since she herself was born from a muggle family. She took a minute to gather her thoughts, her eyes gliding across the walls of the corridor as she considered the boy's words.
"Of course I don't believe you should be hated. Its not something you can control,"She hesitated a moment and played with the edge of her robes, trying to cool the anger in her tone so she didn't upset the boy any further. She wasn't sure how to respond to the information he presented her but found herself rambling anyway,"My mum and dad are muggles, but that doesn't change the fact that I can do magic. And yeah, I get that they might not always be the best people but... they were so excited for me when they found out I actually had somewhere to go, somewhere to learn, and the fact that some families pride themselves on the fact that they're pure blood... Its despicable. Nothing changes the fact that muggles as human as the rest of us."
She really didn't understand the ideology. Muggles weren't all bad, as wizards weren't all good, and vice versa. Even the thought that one was more superior than the other made her mouth taste sour. For a moment, she found her thoughts drifting to some of the general things she had learned in history class during her time at a muggle school. Chills swept down her spine at the thought of someone evil having access to the kind of power wizards do, but as the boy had said, the Dark Lord had been born a wizard, and he was what she would describe as evil incarnate.
Without her realizing it, she had balled her hands into fists. She released her grip some and drew a soft breath before she looked over at the boy again, her eyes kind despite the spill she went on,"I'm sorry, I got carried away... but... all I'm trying to say is, you're just the same as the rest of us; the same as me. We're in this together, okay?" She extended her hand and smiled sheepishly,"My name's Amelia, Amelia Boux."

"I'm James! James McMurtrie. It's really nice to meet you." He gave her a big grin, the kind girl had sated his anger and hurt somewhat and he appreciated that very much, "Ah- Savannah Rose, her name was and she hangs around with a Ravenclaw girl called Tatiana Crane. You know... just in case you run into them in the hall - you'll- ah- know what your in for."
He smiled, and then laughed pointing to the Centaur painting, pacing menacingly at the end of the hall.
"I - uh- I can never find my way around here... I got lost this morning trying to get to the Owlery and asked that Centaur for help. He - um- well he wasn't super helpful so - I -um - it's embarrassing - but I lost my temper and called him a rude name so... I'm now the enemy of all the Centaur paintings in the school. They've been following me around for most of the day..."
He shifted uncomfortably, he'd become so comfortable around Lark that he'd forgotten about how nervous any extended conversation with a girl a would make him.
"I - uh - do you want to be friends Amelia? I'm - uh- you seem really nice and -I - um - I want to surround myself with as many nice people as I can while I'm here."

Amelia listened patiently as he spoke and made a small 'o' shape with her mouth when he told her the names of the girls that had upset him so much. She made a mental note to store the names in the back of her mind, wondering if she would have such a bad first impression on them as well if she ever met them.
She smiled as she listened to James speak, however, her eyes dancing with amusement as he went on to explain the story behind the Centaurs. She couldn't help but laugh at the thought of the boy outwardly insulting the King, and wondered if she too should apologize later for snapping at the painting so easily when she herself didn't know the situation. It was amusing, of course, that the boy was led astray by a Centaur, but it was easily just as amusing thinking from the Centaur's point of view on the matter.
But the moment James called her nice, Amelia felt herself swell with pride. She didn't think of herself as that nice of a person, I mean sure I do nice things but does that really constitute being a nice person? She figured it was something she would have to dwell on later as the boy had offered his friendship.
She couldn't help but grin at him before she shrugged her shoulders, very obviously being theatrically dramatic about the question,"Would I like to be friends?" She pondered aloud, tapping her chin with her pointer finger,"Hmm... well, James, I don't think I would like to,"When the boy's face dropped she quickly continued,"No, I believe I would love to."

James wiped his eyes on the back of his sleeve and grinned.
"Brilliant!" he said with a glint in his eye, "Yeah- that's- that's awesome. Thank you, you've made me feel way better."
He looked at the girl, and noticed a kindness in her bright blue eyes. He also thought that she was very pretty and he felt his stomach begin to shift, as he had the strange and slightly unfamiliar urge to tell her. He shook the thought from his mind. Perhaps it was simply a result of the magic in the air and the flood of emotions that had erupted from him in such a short amount of time.
James realized, that if he didn't get back to Lark soon, she'd have to leave without him, and he'd wanted the chance to talk more with her. He realized all of a sudden that he had no idea where to go. It was as if somebody had sapped his memory away completely. He didn't even know if he could make it back to the Library successfully.
James may have been good at a few things, but directions were his greatest weakness.
"Uh- I've got to go - but I just realized I'm completely lost. Do you have any idea how to get to the Ravenclaw Common Room?" he scratched his head and looked down each side of the long corridor, "I- uh- I honestly don't even know which way I came from".

Amelia smiled softly at the boy's words, glad that he thought so highly of her, but she found that was she was doing was something anyone should have done. Regardless of probably being in the same year as James, she felt that if she had been in an older year she still would have gone out of her way to help him out; that was just the kind of girl she was as she knew all too well what it was like to be somewhere so foreign.
She considered for a moment where they were, and listened as he talked about not knowing where they were, and bit her lower lip. She had no idea where the Ravenclaw common room was, but she was pretty confident that she could lead them back to the library. She spent the majority of her time there after all; her nose stuck in a book as she studied to help one of her friends out with their own homework.
She told James as much as she turned her gaze to look at him,"Well... I'm not sure where your common room is, but I should be able to get back to the library. I just came from there." She gestured to the two books sitting on the floor nearby and stopped to pick them up, realizing she must have sat them down when she first got here. She turned to look at him again, and grinned softly," If you can trust my navigational skills, we could walk back together? If all else fails we'll get lost again, but I'm sure we could ask a painting for help... As long as it's not a Centaur."

James grinned.
"I'd really like that Amelia. Yeah, I think I can probably half find my way from the Library - Yeah next time I'm asking a portrait of a professor or something..."
The two started to make their way through the corridors, at one point having a short altercation with an angry grey centaur with a crossbow.
"So, what's your story then Amelia Boux? When'd you find out about your Hogwarts letter?" he paused for a moment, thinking about all his old friends from Primary school. The tricky thing about being a Muggleborn was that he had to leave his old life completely behind. He'd broken off more than a few friendships he'd completely broken because they knew he'd been lying to them about something, just not exactly what. He thought about the last time he saw Pete, about how he'd seen his best friend run off into the rain, never to speak to him again. It was with good cause too, James felt like he'd been breaking an solemn promise, by lying to his best friend about Hogwarts. But what else could he do? It was against the law, the statute of secrecy.
"I said I wanted to repeal the Statute of Secrecy... to the girl I mean... Savannah," he said quietly, "I think it's totally awful that Muggles can't know anything about this part of the world. I - uh- I think I lost my best friend over it."
He looked at her with a sad smile, and sighed.

She couldn't help but smile at his quip about asking a painting of a professor for directions before she gently folded her hands behind her back, eyes softening as she cast her gaze across the corridor walls, keeping track of where they were. She considered for a moment, remembering when the Owl had shown up with a letter in its beak. Her parents had thought anything of it, as she was always attracting animals to the house, but when more and more began to show up with the same letter was when they began to pay more attention.
She told James this as they turned a corner,"Its not that interesting, honestly."She murmured softly before she glanced at him, smiling sheepishly,"See I um.. I have a way with animals, and I always have since I was little. We would probably have a new animal everyday almost. So when the Owls first started showing up, I knew something was up but I didn't really think much of it." She laughed to herself, remembering the first time her mom had found her in her room with at least three Owls trying to get her attention. She had seemed so surprised, even though it wasn't truly out of the ordinary.
So when her dad came home that night, her and her mum had told him of what had happened. So they decided then to open the letter. All she could remember was reading it and being confused, because she thought witches and wizards existed in books, but her mum and dad were almost just as confused as she was. But they accepted it anyway with open arms, she recounted, as she remembered her dad scooping her up in his arms and spinning her around and around in circles.
She had nearly gotten lost in her thoughts when James spoke up again, this time mentioning Savannah and the loss of his friend. She blinked in surprise before she smiled softly, nodding in slight agreement,"I mean... I suppose I can see both sides of it." She murmured softly, her mind drifting to the violence in the Muggle world. She sighed and crossed her arms behind her head as they walked, her fingers raking through her hair,"I never really had to worry about losing someone because well... Kids in my neighborhood said I was too weird for them, but insisted that we were 'friends' when it was befitting of them." She considered for a moment before she looked at him, smiling sheepishly,"Either way... I'm really sorry you had to go through that. I don't think anyone deserves going through something like that."
She never had considered what coming to Hogwarts would have done to normal kids. She wasn't one of them, didn't have friends and didn't have a lot of family that would have missed her during the school year. The thought bothered her a bit, but she ignored it as she turned back to her friend, gauging his response.
