Harlin's day out
Like most days at Hogwarts it was mostly cloudy with the sun peeking out every now and then. As summer approached rather quickly, warm winds blew through the usually cold campus. By all accounts with the way the wind spread the fresh smells of the wilderness around. It could be classified as a perfectly perfect day to enjoy. The crisp smell of the pines on the wind wafting over any passerby's nose like the calming touch of one's mother.
It was relaxing, soothing, and most of all comforting. Sadly not everyone thought this to be true. In this most symphonic display of nature, there was a major dissonance that was quickly quelling the harmonious balance. Tall, imposing, and troubled a large figure swiftly stalked through the grounds heading for a small outcropping of large pines close to the castle itself.
Dark-red auburn hair bobbed quickly in rhythm to their pace and movement. It was cut in a fringe style leaving much on the front and top. It was quite, curly and wavy which was unusual for someone with his type of hair, yet unique. Their jet black school robes, were open for a change and looked massive on him. Despite this and possibly purposefully so, this is also hid his own large size. Their chest was already barrel sized practically and arms that were visibly were packing some muscle to them.
He was lean and strong not scrawny and tall it would appear. As they stalked into the trees, high-pitched almost desperate laughter could be heard escaping their lips. This freckle covered giant was in fact a student, and furthermore was the young prefect of Hufflepuff Quinn Ignatius Healy. One would wonder what they were laughing about, why did they look so troubled, so angry, so...scared?
Stopping in the middle of the outcropping, the young Irish lad leaned again a tree. It's rough bark feeling surprisingly good against their back. Lifting their head up, their softened emerald-blue orbs looked up at the pine needles above. Where various beams of sunlight were able to shine through. "Hehehe...what fun what fun...my dear Queeny. You're just too nice. You're too plain you should let your other half shiiiiiine~" The voice didn't sound like him at all. It was high pitched, whimisical, and unhinged. "Nae ah can't let ye out. Naet again. They nearly found us out. You've always been there for me Harlin, but you know full well why ah can't let ye out." He spoke seriously. Was this seriously a 12-year-old? Now the current voice sounded like Quinn, it was a bit deeper and noticeably strained but it was him.
The freckled boy had numerous emotions passing over his face, but one thing was completely constant. That was a neigh permanent and wide tooth grinned plastered on his face. "Oooooooh? Care to elaborate Queeny, because as you know your memory is quuuuuuiiiiite unreliable hehehehe!" To anyone not looking at him. One would assume that Quinn was having a conversation with a completely different person. In fact it was actually just Quinn himself, talking with well...himself.
Unhealthy yes, concerning yes, disturbing yes, weird...definitely. "Oh why don't ye shove it up yer hole Harlin. What do ye want anyway? Ah thought ah buried ye." The giggling ensued once more, this much louder, more giddy, much more unhinged in both manner and tone. "Tsk tsk. Queeny it's simple. It's because you buried me with everything that I'm here. You bury everything. Because of that I'm simply here to...hehe knock some sense into you. I am you after all and you need me tooooo~" The voice in his head whimsically said, with an unknown undertone lining its word like a deadly poison.
In response Quinn simply grunted, still staring up at the sun. A since of utter confusion washing through him. Why was Harlin here? Why now? Why was he trying to break free. Quinn didn't want to go back to the institute not again. He hated it there, could he even go there considering what he was. Questions questions and more questions. Never enough answers. The laughing continued though now it was simply in his mind and not out loud. He didn't believe a word Harlin said. How could he after the incident with Donnigan.
His unhinged grin slowly faded as he sunk deep into his own thoughts. The now dangerous whispers of Harlin echoing throughout his own mind. One word constantly remembering. "Remember." At first it was neigh imperceivable, but rather quickly as the minutes ticked by it was grew louder and louder. The voice seemingly multiplying, followed by that haunting, decrepit laughter that would make even a seasoned sailor pale with fright.
He squeezed his eyes tighter putting his hands to his ears and screaming out for Harlin to shut it. He slumped down to the ground and images started to play through his head. They were broken up at first, but soon they were slowly starting to become clearer. It was as if they were memories he suppressed, which they were. After nearly 15 minutes of agony, he gasped loudly the memories flooding back into him....he remembered.
His eyes fluttered open and he started to walk through the memory of months passed. Right after the incident with Donnigan and right before he was sent off to the psychiatric hospital. Quinn began to curl up as he remembered more and more of what he did. It felt horrible he wanted it to stop, he wanted the memories to stop but they wouldn't. All the while he kept hearing Harlin in his head. "Don't stop now Queeny. You need to remember it all. You caaaan't run. This is for your own good." All those sentences and more kept echoing through his head. He wondered why Harlin was trying so hard. Why did he even care? "Oh Queeny because I promised you didn't I. To always protect you no matter what right? An maybe have a bit of fun along the waaaay~"
The voice spoke louder this time. It was honestly kind of touching. The memories painful but he was glad that Harlin for his hand. Even he just barged his way in after seemingly being so much more tamer the last few years. It was in this moment of weakness, in the middle of his remembering that everything suddenly felt like nothing.
It was then that Quinn wiped the tears that had ran down the sides of his cheek. A happy smile on their face as they stood up dusting themselves off. Inspecting the fabric and their current entire. "Now then Queeny you just rest for a short while. Let good ole Harlin take the wheel. Call it...an intervention~" He giggled, speaking verbally now. His demeanor completely different, he appeared very approachable and brimming with energy. Yet at the same time there was a certain...danger to him. Something unreadable and unknown behind that happy demeanor. Harlin took out their wand and inspected it carefully. Eyeing every inch of it with a careful meticulous manner. Much like a jeweler would appraise a diamond.
"Very very nice Queeny. This is such a fine wand you have here. Now if only would practice with this more. Hmmmm noooo I have a better idea. Let's have a bit of fun with him. Oh and I have the perfect idea~" A sly giggle escaped their lips, their eyes now sharp and filled with mischievous intent. Keeping the wand loosely in their right hand, the large Hufflepuff walked out of the tree outcropping and began to explore their immense surroundings.
"What fun what fun!!" They exclaimed giddily. Despite their size, there was a certain light touch to their step. A simple...pep if you will. Harlin currently had full control. For years they were only able to break out for brief minutes. So he had devised a way to get more than that. To get his freedom from Quinn. In truth he did like Quinn, cared for him a lot, but he needed to taste freedom. After all if the other one could break out so would Harlin. So off he went humming a merry, whimsical tune.

Harlin's day out
Perfect. That was the only way to describe a day like this one. Absolutely flawless in every way. Scotland was not used to the warm weather that the sun was beating down onto the fields at this very moment, meaning that not many would know what was in store when they would wake up the next day with sunburns of every kind, some so bad that they would have to be healed in the infirmary. Marla was no exception, as she strolled through the grounds, only minutes into being outside during a day this gorgeous and her cheeks were flushed scarlet from the heat. She retreated to a cluster of pine trees nearby and concealed herself in the shade, sitting down and leaning her back on the cool bark. She closed her eyes, a smile tugging on the corner of her lips. How could she not be happy? Scotland being warm? That was once in a blue moon. Even in the coolness of the shade, it felt like there was an invisible blanket wrapped around her body.
A light, almost nauseating feeling could be felt in her stomach as excitement filled her heart to the brim. She tapped the tips of her chunky sneakers on the squishy grass, clicking her tongue while she dug in her ginormous pockets for her book in a mess of candy wrappers and knick-knacks that she had picked up over the course of her days at school, eventually finding it and yanking the piece of literature out before she lost grip and never let it see the light of day. She reread the cover while tracing her fingers on the rough spine, Jiggery Pokey and Hocus Pocus. She had picked it up at the library the day before, because what was more compelling than pulling tricks? It had caught her attention immediately, not surprisingly. The minute she opened her eyes, Marla Quinlan was bound to be trouble. It was almost as if she were born to do just that: cause mischief. In all honesty, it was getting a bit out of hand. To the point where she was beginning to admire Peeves and his "work". Throwing stones at innocent students? Truly an icon.
And while in this state of mind, you could say that Marla was thriving, although it was cheesy, she was at her happiest. Buuut her appearance was not conveying so. A frizzy mess of red hair from the heat almost looked like if a cloud and a furious forest fire had combined. Even her face couldn't be spared, for her dark circles were even more evident in the darkness of the shadows. She looked exhausted, and to be frank, she was. If nobody noticed, sleep was not the lion's forte. She was never tired, and when she was? It was at the worst times. Of course, the only time she ever wanted to sleep was when she had a three-page essay to do. Just dandy. Not to mention, her posture? Awful. In a way, she kind of resembled a very grumpy grandmother. Spiritually, she probably was one. Constantly slouched over, its a surprise that she's still able to walk.
She opened the blue-covered book, sticking her nose in it as soon as she turned through the first few irrelevant pages. Well– that's what most people would do. As much as Marla seemed like one of those people who would sell their soul to get out of going to class, she was a genuinely curious person. Exploring areas for the hell of it, actually listening in class (sometimes), and, well, reading. The easiest, and in most cases, the safest way to obtain knowledge. She grew up learning pretty much everything she knew from publications of every kind, being as isolated as she was. It made sense, between her home and school life, not having many people to talk to at either, literature was really her only friend.
It was no surprise that that statement still stood, because Marla really wished that she were alone right now. For, she was rudely interrupted by another student's coarse, familiar Irish accent. She knew that voice. But from where? One as loud and personable as that, you'd think that she'd remember, huh? It seemed that the voice was talking to another named Harlin, but she heard no voice respond. Marla furrowed her brows, confused, and continued to read her book, shaking the thoughts out of her head. It was none of her business. Or, it wasn't until the seemingly Irish brute spoke again. This time with more aggression and once again: no response. And thats when it hit her that he was talking to himself. Was he mad? They didn't let actual loonies into Hogwarts, no?
Whether they did or not was none of her concern, because after a few more murmurs, the voice was gone. The only sounds that could be heard were the sweet, sweet echos of nature. Chirping of the birds, the faint whistling of the wind in the distance, it was peaceful. Once again, it was perfect. And so, she went back to reading, because what else was there to do? But of course, as soon as she got invested... The voice could be heard again. Though this time it was much, much different. More playful. More... Malevolent. No matter how dangerous this Harlin, Irish dude or whoever was, he was sure as hell annoying, and she wasn't having it. Marla pushed herself off the ground and turned in the direction of the squeaky voice, marching over to a... Shockingly tall individual. And then the memories came flooding back. His name was Quinn. They had met in Hogsmeade when Professor Bercegay and Browne had an equally awkward and hilarious encounter. She knew that red hair anywhere. It was him! Last time she had interacted with him, he was totally different. What was up with this guy?
Marla marched over, tapping the boy on the shoulder. Even doing so, a chill went up the arm that made skin to skin contact with him. He was radiating hyperactivity, so much that it felt like even a bit of it had been transferred to Marla. That was most likely an exaggeration, but either way it was unsettling how insanely giddy he looked. "Excuse me... Quinn, I think it was? Dunno if you remember me, but I– sorry," a chuckle escaped her lips as she rubbed the nape of her neck nervously, biting her lip. She didn't get nervous like this, only on occasion. Something was up with this boy. He was freaky. "But you're being loud, I can't focus on my reading. Could you lower it a little?" She looked over the tall boy's shoulder, trying to spot another person, supposedly Harlin, but there was nobody in sight. An uncanny feeling brewed in her gut as she looked up at the boy with a pleading glare in her golden-brown eyes. Hopefully, after this encounter she wouldn't be murdered and thrown into a ditch... But that's Hogwarts for you, huh? Full of surprises.

Harlin's day out
"Oooooooh a book a book! What sort of book is it? Is it a fun book hmmmmmm? Or is it a boring one? I hate boring." His voice was still high, and very jovial. Each word rolling off his tongue like light fluffy cotton candy. Sweet, but too much of it and it turned deadly. Not deathly, but deadly enough as is. "I've heard him talk about you. He likes you, not in a disgusting lovey dovey way but aaaaaaaaa...hehe oh I have a fun game for you!" He clapped his hands stepping closer and stared down at you. His eyes were definitely crazed, not a chaotic sort of crazy but the cold, focused kind. His eyes carried something indescribable behind them. They could not be put into words.
"Would you like to hear his biggest secrets." One hand playfully whipped around his wand, twirling it ever so casually. "If you humor me, I promise to reward you with some fuuuuuuun secrets~" He giggled like a school girl, showing his teeth from ear to ear. "So what do you say miss Quinlan are you ready, or does the cat have your tongue hmmmm?" He paused tilting his head waiting for an answer.

Harlin's day out
Brave was something that she had always prided herself on being, but in a situation like this, with a tall, insane Irishman speaking like a cartoon character towering over you? No. There wasn't a confident bone in her body. In fact, she felt as if she didn't have any bones. Her legs were practically jelly and even began to buckle before she caught herself on a tree. She glanced down at the mess of pages in her hands as the strange boy asked about her book. "I don't know, ye feckin' weirdo, see for yehself." She put the book into his hands for him to skim through, crossing her arms. Of course, the one beautiful day in Scotland had to be ruined by this creep. Then again, this could be fun if she played her cards right... Ugh, but hopefully he'd just skim the book and leave her alone.
Her attempts seemed to be futile as the boy kept talking...And talking, and more talking. It was unsettling, considering that the last time she saw Quinn, he was completely normal. No squeaky Caillou voice or anything, and now he was acting like a complete mad man. "Ah game?" Her voice was dripping with vexation, a scowl forming on her face. "Ah don't care about any game, ay? Ah just want yeh to leave so ah can read,"
However, he truly caught her attention when the word secret was mentioned. One thing that Marla could never refuse was knowledge, and secrets were the absolute best type of it. The weight that they held sometimes was great, or even deadly, but how horrible could one emotionally disturbed boy's secrets be? She crossed her arms, pretending to be uninterested, it wouldn't be fun if she made it easy for this Harlin. "Get on widdit, then. Don't be ah drag, I'm already gettin' bored of yah and this game hasn't even started," She clicked her tongue, playing with her nails dramatically. As creepy as he was, maybe this would be as he said. Fun.
This perfect day just got even better.

Harlin's day out
"Oh I like you~" It seemed to be meant as a compliment but the look he conveyed to you. The happy, cheerful smile, the almost smiling eyes with an innate deadly sharpness. It all seemed off like it was just a facade for something. It was off even though it should have been meant as a playful compliment. "Good good. I hope you like riddles. I have five. For every riddle you get right I reveal a secret. Each riddle gets progressively harder. With each riddle you solve another secret is revealed. On every riddle you get 2 guesses and no hints. A real mental challenge hehe. Get all 5 riddles right and I'll reward you with a sixth secret. A secret that he has told no one, one he might even hurt you over. Oh how fun~"
It was unclear if the words he spoke about that last secret were the truth, however with the undertones of his voice if you could notice them. They made it sound like it was possibly true. Though with the way Harlin talked it was unclear if he was just being dramatic, extra, truthful or a clever combination of the three. It seemed like with every word he spoke there was a half truth mixed in somewhere. He was hard to read and even harder to predict.
