Dale was "hiding" in on of the stalls of the old abandoned toilets, he usually avoided the old creepy toilets, but today he had a good reason for being there. He had been reading the chemistry textbook he brought with him and had recently become overwhelmed with the urge to do some chemistry, he wanted to see thermite.

His father taught him how to make a thermite reaction on his 10th birthday, ever since Dale had wanted to make the most powerful thermite he could. He had no iron oxide or aluminum. The aluminum was easy enough, all he had to do was ask for aluminum foil, easy. the iron oxide would be harder. He would have to find some sort of rusted object. Luckily he had the idea to look in the abandoned toilets, after all, old toilets used copper pipes. His hunch was right, he used a fork to scrape quite a bit of rust off a pipe and put it into a plastic bag. Now he had everything he needed.

He waited for a day when no one was in or around the toilets, he speed-walked in hoping he wasn't seen. To be honest, Dale was horrified that he was doing this, after all, he was sure making thermite wasn't allowed by Hogwarts, but his inner chemist was too strong. After all, it's not like a thermite reaction is very loud. So he calmed himself down and went into a stall, he laid out the aluminum out and tried to place a bit of iron oxide on it, but his and slipped, and instead of putting a bit of iron oxide he put all of it. BOOM instantly a tiny explosion happened, not loud enough for the floors above or below him, but loud enough for people outside of the toilets to notice. Dale knew he messed up, he quickly gathered all of his things and tried to rush out of the toilets, hoping no one noticed the explosion.

Fuck fuck fuck, why, not again, oh lord Jesus Christ in heaven, I pray to thee, not again. Please god let Kaegen not be destroying the abandoned bathrooms again. I don't want to have to deal with that a second time. Please lord, once was enough.

This was Elena's internal monologue as she slightly mentally screeched and raced through the second floor hallways, just barely halting to a stop in front of another student exiting the bathrooms. This one would probably know something at the very least.

She managed to croak out, "Please tell me that isn't Kaegen destroying the bathrooms again. Last time that happened a prefect was in hospital for three days and a little girl got set on a path to insanity. I don't want to be the one jumping out of a window this time."

Elena had a look on her face like this was an inevitability of dealing with Kaegen at all, let alone just dealing with his attempts to destroy the abandoned bathrooms. Elena's mind had calmed down a little bit and her instincts weren't telling her to haul ass so maybe, just maybe, it wasn't an attempted arson again.

Elena hoped that maybe this time it was accidental.

Dale briskly walked out the abandoned toilets coughing into his cupped hand, some of the gas released entered his mouth, nothing too dangerous, he would be fine in a couple of hours. The thing he was worried about was if he got caught or not. The explosion left a pretty large mark on the floor but there where many of those on the floor. If a professor or even a prefect heard that explosion he was dead for sure.

As he tried to escape the crime scene he was too absorbed in his own thoughts, that he did not see the girl with bright blue hair approaching him. Oh fuck, oh shit, I'm dead. Needless to say, he had a heart attack when she spoke, luckily she wasn't a professor and didn't seem to be a prefect.

As the girl spoke she seemed to be out of breath but she said something about a boy naked Kaegen destroying the bathrooms and injured and insane people. To be honest, he didn't know who Kaegen was, but he considered to blame this thing on him, but the good boy inside of him decided against that. Instead, he turned to look at the girl and tried to hide the plastic bag and chemistry textbook, and calmed himself down. Dale adjusted his scarf and spoke up in the calmest voice he could manage "Uhh, N-no it was j-just a, uhh, p-plumbing malfunction?" he said quite nervously and he started to sweat profusely. He could only hope he didn't look suspicious.

Elena, contrary to popular opinion, noticed a lot of things.

Luckily for Dale though, when she figured out vaguely what actually happened she was so relieved that it wasn’t Kaegen beating people up that she couldn’t quiet figure out how she was meant to care. No need to tell a prefect when it’s just someone messing around and nobody is hurt, that’s the E Jonesy pranking guarantee. It took people a while to learn that nowadays, since they forgot she herself performed pranks, when that information was taken over by her abject refusal to go out after curfew.

“Just a plumbing malfunction? Th-that’s really good, thank you. Since my brain hasn’t told me to haul ass away from here I’m going to assume you’re right on that one.” Elena panted a little from all the running as she leaned back against the wall, “I’m Elena, Elena Jones. It’s nice to meet you.”

Elena finished catching her breath and then smiled brightly at the other kid, happy to be not about to throw down with something or someone. Was Kaegen a something or a someone? Definitely a something, his pupils were weird as hell. Someone had once said dhampir, now if only she could find out for certain.

Dale felt as if a large weight had been lifted from his shoulders, Elena seemed like to be a very chill person, and she looked relieved that a person named Kaegen wasn't involved, he wondered what he had done to scare Elena so badly. He was pretty sure what he had done was not as bad as what Kaegen had done. And it's not like Dale pulled this kind of stuff often, this was probably the last time he would try something like this, probably. Well if he did something like this, he would be much more careful if he did. Or maybe he would do it outside next time, so if he messed up again, maybe no one will hear it.

Elena had blue hair, Dale had never seen someone with blue hair before and her green scarf gave away that she was a fellow Slytherin. "I'm Dale, D-Dale Kurt. I was on my way to tell someone, so p-please don't w-worry about it" he said to the girl quite nervously. But Dale was interested in this Kaegen person, he must have done something huge here to scare this girl that badly. "Uhh, s-so what did Kaegen do here that shook you up so badly?".

"Dale, I like that name, it's a good name." Elena nodded in approval and smiled, "You don't have to worry, if it's that bad then the elves will fix it, and if it isn't then it's the abandoned toilets anyway."

Elena reasoned it out in a soothing manner, then tried to think of a way to phrase her exact feelings towards Kaegen and exactly what the crazy kid did.

"Not exactly shook up, it made my mind work better if anything, but I was still a bit terrified of dealing with it again." Elena leaned back against the wall in a more casual pose and began to recount the detail of the Quest, "So, basically this kid Kaegen made a bomb in the abandoned toilets, which injured some positively idiotic hufflepuffs. Then, I showed up and tried to calm him, I swear to god it almost worked too, because I know vaguely how to deal with this kid. But Aurelia decided to say she'd 'Deal with him.' So then everything went a lot worse for the team, he went mad, hit Aurelia with a diffindo charm. I dragged my friend Rowan out of there, and that's the tale of Kaegen in the abandoned bathrooms."

Dale had forgotten all about the elves that ran around the place, silent and efficient, truly amazing creatures. He was a bit too joyed to hear that Elena liked his name, he had never really received a compliment like that before! Elena seemed like she was a bit older than Dale, a second-year or perhaps even a third year. Her blue hair was striking to Dale, he could not stop taking glances at it, it reminded him of lighting and stormclouds, truly amazing.

"Oh, wow, w-when did all of this happen, I don't think I heard about it at all." Sure Dale didn't actively follow the school happening but something must have been covered in the school newspaper. Did the school even have a newspaper, Dale wasn't quite sure. "Do we even have an n-newspaper, surely something as big as that would be c-covered in there." He had heard there was a school newspaper but had never really read one, but then again he never ventured outside of his dorm and the library much, and of course the classes he had to attend. The only other time he went outside was to try to find old rusty things in the woods, sadly that did not go well.

The school newspaper had, well, neglected Kaegen's shortcomings to a point. It was a worry that the only mention had been buried in Aurelia's article on misbehaviour. Honestly, if you're putting a bunch of teenagers together in a school and ignoring them, then of course stuff like that will happen. It's inevitable that a lord of the flies situation will arise.

"There is one, but it only started in May and for some reason none of the field reporters cared to do anything on it, and it was just a crazy affair honestly. The paper is crazy too, but... yeah." Elena laughed nervously, "I'll do an article about that when school comes back, the paper doesn't officially run during summer so. Can't do much until after then."

Elena shrugged sadly, "If you ever need any advice though, I run the column, just send me an owl. I'll let you in on a secret, if it's really important then I just send back an owl so you don't have to wait."

She smiled a little, happy that she felt like the newspaper was a tool to help rather than the advice column being a tool to make it look like the newspaper was helping.

Dale thought is cool that Elena wrote for the newspaper, he would have to start reading the newspaper more next year. He also hoped he never crossed paths with Kaegen, ever. But Dale was a bit intrigued on how he managed to make a bomb, all the recipes for explosives, that had a significant amount of power, he knew seemed almost impossible to make at Hogwarts, the stuff required to make them just seemed too hard or even impossible to get at Hogwarts, or at least he thought.

"I'll have to read the newspaper more often now." It seemed like his stutter was gone now, it usually went away after he got used to talking to people, and Elena was really easy to talk to. "Its really cool you run an advice column, I will definitely use it if I ever need help!" It was nice that she used the advice column at Hogwarts was being used to help people, maybe if he knew about it earlier he would ask for studying tips, or maybe advise on how to improve his magic skills. "Well I should get going, It was nice meeting you!", Dale walked away, having met an amazing person.

Elena nodded, "It's free, I think, maybe, I've never actually bought one, I just take one off the top when they're done printing."

Not to mention that she went and read the articles after the editors were done, for fun you know, and to see if she was the victim of any horrible slander. Horrible in this case meaning slander worse than your average she set me on fire or zero out of ten, not a pureblood.

"Awesome! I pray you don't need it but if you do then I'll try my best." Elena flashed a smile, noting that Dale's stutter had retreated, probably because of Elena's natural charm.

Or rather lack thereof, she just kept talking until someone assumed they should join in. That's how you make friends isn't it? Yes, yes it was, or at least until she was just scary and foreboding or sweet enough that people came to her first.

"Nice meeting you too Dale!" Elena waved and did a strange salute to his back before retreating down the corridor, if he turned around again it would look like she'd disappeared.
