Friend or Foe
@Remy AltoAs the partner project was announced, Maggie couldn’t help but immediately glance to her friends, who grinned back at her with just as much excitement. However, Maggie’s happiness faltered when the Charms Professor announced that their partners would be assigned. She began reading off of the list, and Maggie winced every time one of her friends was paired up with someone else. It wasn’t that she was opposed to meeting new people, she just preferred to do these kinds of things with her friends. “Maggie Parker and Remy Alto will be working together...” the Professor droned, continuing down the list without pausing to realize how this affected the students in question. Maggie had heard of Remy, and though he had friends and all, his reputation for being notoriously cold and painstakingly honest caused a little out of worr to build in Maggie’s stomach. She tried not to look too disappointed, as she really wasn’t, she was just— intimidated? She hadn’t ever used that word to describe another student before, but it really couldn’t be more fitting in this instance. Quit it, Maggie! You’re being ridiculous! Maggie swallowed her fear and strode over to her partner, a confident smile beaming on her face. “Looks like you’re stuck with me, huh?” she joked, laughing slightly.

The clock seemed to be ticking awfully slow. Tick, tock, tickety tock... He was eager to get out of this class. Why? Remy was never the kind of person to be able to sit down in one place and just look at the blackboard, trying to memorize what it was saying. Instead, his mind wandered to other realms and dimensions. What if rats were in control of the Earth? What socks was he wearing currently, and was he wearing them on the correct sides? What do ants taste like? All of those important questions ran through his head so when the professor started announcing the names, he missed a couple of the first ones.
“Maggie Parker and Remy Alto will be working together...”
Calling his name was enough to wake up the beast from its slumber as he looked from side to side. What was going on? What were they supposed to do? He could see people pairing up but still jolted when someone walked up to him and started a conversation. There she was, his savior from this awful, boring Hell! Finally, he could babble as much as he wanted to. The girl didn't even have to listen, he just wanted to get it out of his system.
He started mapping her out and drawing a picture of her in his brain. By looking at her robes, he could tell that she was a Gryffindor. It was one of the houses he could tolerate. Then again, all kinds of people populated all the four houses. Remy was a proud Slytherin for sure but often found himself clashing with one of his housemates. Maybe they were too similar after all. "Looks like so," he simply said. He liked confidence, even when it was false. Remy hated wimps and often found enjoyment in teasing the weakest links around him. Had she failed to convince him about her confidence, he would have gladly indulged in that pleasure once again.

Reducio@Remy Alto, mentions @Carson Miller and @Charlotte Cadunt @Min-seo KimOOC: sry for the late response lmao“Looks like so,” he said, his mouth noticeably not curling into a grin like Maggie’d thought it would’ve. Fine, Maggie let out a huff of air, if it’s gonna be that way, it’ll be that way. Forcing herself to think positively, she sat down next to the boy, plopping her bag down onto the floor beside her.
“Do you know what’s actually going on?” Maggie asked, leaning back in her chair and looking to the boy sideways, her bangs only somewhat obstructing her view. The drawings trailing up her forearm were a clear sign she was paying very close attention during the lesson, along with the crumpled up paper ball she and Carson had been passing notes on. She looked to him from across the room, a small smile tugging on her lips as he goofily grinned at Charlotte Cadunt, his head resting on his hand as he watched her work.
“Do you know Min? I’m friends with her— I think I’ve heard about you before from her.” Maggie said, turning back to Remy. “All good things, don’t worry.” she laughed, grinning at the boy. “But yeah, heard that your puns are great.” she shook her head, realizing the fate she’d just subjected herself to. She quickly tried to get off the topic of puns, and she hastily said, “What’s um, your family like?”

He immediately took a defensive stance when he got asked if he knew what was going on. Of course not! He was too dense for anything like that! However, at the sight of the doodles on her arm, he felt much more relaxed and flashed her a sort of smile. Just a little tug on the corners of his mouth since they seemed to be paddling in the same boat. "I have to admit that I might have sort of maybe perhaps not paid attention," he smiled sheepishly and scratched the back of his neck. He then followed her gaze to see her staring at a couple of the other students. Hm, was she considered 'popular'? He wouldn't know, he wasn't too interested in stuff like that, probably the one and only mature side of him.
It took his ridiculously small, pea-sized brain a good couple of seconds to recognize which 'Min' she was talking about. Min-Seo? The gloomy but hauntingly, inhumanly pretty girl who had a knack for art but was poor at snowball fighting. He raised a quizzical brow at the Gryffindor girl, tilting his head ever-so-slightly to the side to emphasize his confusion to her. "Oh, that girl. Why'd she talk about me?" he had many questions spinning in his head now relating to Min-Seo. He wasn't too close with her, was he? Was this Min-Seo's close friend? At least the shortened nickname would suggest something like that.
Oh, right, his dumb, often dinosaur-related puns. That could be one reason to why his name was on this girl's lips now. He was then peppered by questions that made him chuckle lightly. "Woah girl, take a breather. How about telling your name first?" He technically already knew her name since it got shouted at the classroom a second ago but preferred to be properly introduced to her first.
"I'm Remy. I'm from a family of..." he started counting with his fingers, muttering names under his breath occasionally before raising up nine fingers. "Nine. That was what you were asking for, right?" he smiled again, trying to look less hostile like he sometimes did and more friendly. He appreciated being approached by someone like this.

“Oh, that girl. Why'd she talk about me?” Remy asked, as recognition spread across his features. Maggie shrugged, her grin fading away as a non-chalant expression took over her face.
“I dunno,” she began, simply, as she continued, “no reason, I guess. I think you just came up in a conversation somehow and she told us she knew you.” Maggie chewed on the inside of her cheek, rythmically drumming her fingers on the table.
She squinted slightly as the person who’d been standing in front of the window directly opposite Maggie moved slightly, causing a bright beam of light to hit her directly in the face. She shifted in her seat slightly, trying to find a spot of shadow where her eyes weren’t being burned to a crisp.
“Woah girl, take a breather. How about telling your name first?” Remy said, in response to her question about his family. Maggie jokingly rolled her eyes at him, scoffing slightly as the boy continued,
“Nine. That was what you were asking for, right?” he answered, not bothering to pause and wait for Maggie’s name.
“I guess,” Maggie replied, casting a sidelong glance towards Remy as she added, with notable humor lacing her tone, “My name’s Maggie, by the way. Maggie Parker.” a small smile tugging on the corners of her lips, despite the small seed of annoyance that’d been planted in her stomach when he told her to “take a breather”.
“Nine’s impressive, I’ll give you that, but I’m afraid that I’ve got to one-up you there.” Maggie said, smirking at the Slytherin boy. “I’ve got seven siblings, and with both my parents around, that makes a grand total of...” Maggie drummed her fingers on the table, making a small drumroll, “ten! Sorry, Rem, better luck next time.” she teased, mock pity lacing her tone.

He wasn't a mindreader let alone blessed with the gift of being able to read others like an open book, but it didn't take a genius to recognize the nervous drumming and chewing the inside of one's cheeks as a sign that something was a bit...fishy. Remy wouldn't press harder on that, he'd find out on his own eventually. Still, he couldn't help but wonder what kind of conversations the girls were having to bring Remy Alto up. Was he that interesting, relatable of a young man? Maybe so.
Despite the disturbances cast by the sunlight that hit her eyes, she managed to introduce herself.
"Maggie," he simply repeated as an attempt to remember her name. Sometimes even the stellar memory of a twelve-year-old could betray you in the moments that you most needed it. There had been many instances of Remy having to greet someone as 'dude' or 'friend' or 'my guy' while desperately trying to decipher their name inside of his pea-sized brain.
He blinked a few times, as slowly as possible to signify his surprise. Usually, Remy was the one who got the 'woah, you have a big family' but this time he was the one to mutter that sentence under his breath. The boy didn't have to feign confusion given the widened eyes. Man, how many hand-me-down's did this girl own? The numbers must have been sky-high! That was one monumental one-up for sure.
She was already giving him nicknames. He gave her a sneer. "Well, Mags, that's the more the merrier in your case, innit?" he did soften into a more gentle smile eventually.
