A Green Thumb's Gratitude
It was the end of June, the temperature around them started to become warmer, it was a sign meaning that summer had finally arrived. During the first year in Hogwarts, Griseldis learned a lot of new Spells and a few Potions. Met a few interesting students who might become really good friends with her in the new future, but who knows. However, what surprised her was that the Professor of Herbology, Professor Bryony Davis suddenly announced her resignation in a very unexpected way. Professor Davis was indeed a very strict old lady but Griseldis truly enjoyed her Herbology lessons, there was no doubt that many students who loved her Herbology classes would miss her dearly.
When the summer holiday started, there were still many other students who still stayed in Hogwarts including Griseldis saw the Head of Slytherin Professor Jensens put up a request, asking for any volunteers willing to help do some Summer chores. There were many different kinds of chores the students could pick to do, Griseldis still had a few days before returning to her hometown. So she decided to use these days to help out and earn some money as well. Griseldis wanted to have enough money to buy her own pet owl, after all, that was her main goal from the beginning ever since she became a student here in Hogwarts, it wasn't easy to find a way to earn more money. Her Grandfather always said to her, that you will only gain the best from hard work. She looked through the list first and read it quietly to herself, "Hmm...let's see...wash the dishes, removing litter, moping the corridors, gardening..." when Griseldis saw the word gardening, it made her remember the times she had learned in each Herbology class and the way how Professor Davis taught them. Maybe I could help do some gardening to show my gratitude to the former Professor of Herbology, she thought. Finally, she made her decision and knew where to begin.Once the energetic Gryffindor girl arrived at the Campgrounds, there were a few students from different houses already started their chores at the greenhouses. It was quite sunny outside and the sky was so blue and clear, she could smell the sweet aroma from the flowers and fruits, then she felt the gentle breeze that touched her slightly tan skin. What a perfect day for gardening, I can't wait to start! She nodded with a satisfied smile.
All the equipment and tools she needed for gardening had been well provided by the staffs, she placed the basket and the water-filled watering pot on the ground. She kneeled down to peer inside what was in the basket and saw a pair of gloves, a small pouch of flower seeds, a few tiny green bulbs, a gardening shovel, and a sickle for cutting unwanted weeds. "Now, let's start with the easiest task.", She grabbed the handle of the watering pot and went to the field of lavenders that was right in front of her. While watering these beautiful violet colored flowers, it reminded her a bit of her home and lavender was her mother favorite flower.
Griseldis had very good stamina and strength so she didn't really mind the heavy labor. After she finished watering the whole field of lavenders, she went back to placed the empty watering pot on the ground again. "Watering mission complete, time to plant some seeds and bulbs.", she kneeled down again and took out the gloves from the basket, when she wore them, the gloves surprisingly fit her hands. She simply brought the basket with her and a gardening shovel in her right hand, then went on a search for an empty field to plant.
It didn't take long until Griseldis found two long rows of fresh soil, she quickly walked toward the area and began her second task. Not caring that her skirt getting dirtied by the soil, she needed to do a kneeling position so that she could work easier on the field. She used the gardening shovel to dig a hole, then carefully placed the tiny bulb in it and used both hands to cover the hole with soil gently. Griseldis repeated the same thing planting each bulb in the fresh soil, it took almost half an hour until she was out of bulbs to plant. Next, it was time to plant the seeds. She went to the second row and used the gardening shovel to dig each hole in a perfect line. When she finished, she took out the pouch out of the basket and started to plant a few seeds into the soil and she had to cover them all as she did with the bulbs. After that, she needed to water them so she ran back to fill the watering pot with fresh water and went back to water the planted seeds and bulbs. "Puh...I'm starting to feel a bit tired.", Griseldis said and used her left arm to wipe away the sweat from her forehead. She still needed to cut the weeds that grew from a few flower patch and collect come vegetables for the kitchen staffs.
Griseldis put the gardening shovel back into the basket and took out a sickle this time, she looked around and saw there was a marigold patch full of weeds. "That won't do.", she said with a frown. It took an hour for her to finish cutting all the weeds out. She gathered all the weeds and threw them away in the huge garden waste bin that was nearby.
"One mission left, time to collect eggplants.", Griseldis walked around and found the eggplant patch that was near a greenhouse. Even though she slowly grew exhausted from all the gardening work she just did but picking eggplants should be really easy and she didn't need to kneel down to pluck them at all. The eggplant was one of Griseldis's favorite vegetables because her mother used eggplants to cook her beloved dish since she was little and that would be the Cantonese eggplant casserole. But the best use of eggplant for the dish was the Chinese eggplant and not European eggplant, they were thinner and longer than the one she picked in her hand. I wonder what kind of dish are the kitchen staffs going to cook with these eggplants tonight?
Griseldis successfully finished her summer chore for this month and went back to return the items and gardening tools in the greenhouse. She picked up the basket that was full of fresh eggplants and turned around to look at the beautiful garden one last time before heading back to Hogwarts.
On her way back, she couldn't help but feel proud of herself.
