River walked steadily down the many staircases of the grand castle, thinking of how nice it was to not have any homework for the day. Sure, she was supposed to finish her transfiguration by the evening, but she was nearly done and expected she’d be able to finish it by tomorrow morning. A little bit of free time was desperately needed, and she would get some time to relax, and think.

As River had peaked out of the common room window that morning, her spirit lifted slightly as she saw the current weather conditions. Cloudy, but no rain, absolutely perfect for some time outside. On her way out, she had grabbed hold of her favourite book, and a green hoodie which she threw over her torso on her way out of the great doors leading out to the grounds outside.

She stopped for a second, to feel the fresh breeze brush across her pale skin, and her red hair moved with it like the waves of water. Clouds, what a perfect day, River thought to herself, as she begun striding acroos the grounds in direction of the Great Lake. It was the perfect spot to get some time to think, read her book, and simply enjoy the sight of the beautiful water where magical creatures lived beneath the surface.

River knew where she was going, her favourite tree of the entire grounds. Perhaps it’s peculiar that I have a favourite tree...
She could see it, swaying slightly in the distance. It was a very large tree, with a grand trunk and a mighty crown. In case of any sunlight, the leaves would perhaps shield most of River’s body from the strong rays of the sun. That was the plan anyway.

She went over to the lake-side by the large tree, and sat down. Her back propped up by the mossy wood, and she tilted her head back, closed her eyes and simply sat there in silence for a moment.
River’s eyes shot open by the sound of a branch breaking under the footsteps of somebody approaching. Please don’t see me, please don’t see me... River thought, as she listened carefully as to where the footsteps were headed.

“Oh, hello there! I’m not sure I know you! I’m Vivienne Nina Rose, but people call me Vivienne. What’s your name? And, why are you sitting all alone here? It must be awfully lonely. Well, you’re not alone now!” Vivienne smiled at the girl sitting by the tree. She had been on her normal evening walk, and noticed the girl. She saw her often, but never talked to her. She didn’t seem like a people person. But today, Vivienne decided to sit down next to her. Clearing a place below a nearby tree, Vivienne plopped herself down, sighing happily. She adjusted her bright yellow dress and began fiddling with a odd little pendant on her necklace.

«Oh, hello there!», a voice spoke up from behind River as her muscles clenched slightly Ugh, please say she’s talking to someone else? A girl, came walking up to her and before River had time to have a closer look at who it was, the girl continued, «I’m not sure I know you! I’m Vivienne Nina Rose, but people call me Vivienne. What’s your name? And, why are you sitting all alone here? It must be awfully lonely. Well, you’re not alone now!». River eyed the girl with cold eyes as she spoke. Perfect, she’s a talker... «Hello Vivienne, I’m River», she answered coldly, not reacing her hand out for a handshake. She simply looked at the girl, a neutral look on her face.

The girl sat down next to River, as she pushed a red strand of hair out of her blue and grey eyes. Jeez, she’s just coming over here without asking to even sit down, River thought to herself as she watched the girl sit down. She attempted to put on a pleasant face, and a slight forced smile. «And I am sitting here because I enjoy the outside, and had no one to bring with me I guess», she added, and turned to look out over the lake. She crossed her arms across her chest, pushing her book into her ribs slightly as she did.

Vivienne gasped dramatically. “I’m sorry! Did I intrude on you? I didn’t mean to. It’s just, I’m overly curious, you see.” She wasn’t being sarcastic, it was simply the truth. “Well, I suppose I should leave. Oh, but it’s so much fun sitting here talking to you. What book are you reading? Right now, I’m into reading muggle books, because I never did at home and my muggle mum wants me to. They’re quite good, actually. My favorite is “The Outsiders” by S. E. Hinton. Do you read muggle books, or are you more into wizard books? What’s your favorite book?” Vivienne sighed. “I’m sorry, I’m rambling again, aren’t I. I do that quite a lot. I try not to, but it’s just so hard! You know, I’m not always this energetic. I just get so excited when I meet a new person. I’m always looking to find new friends because I don’t have very many. Most people are too intimidated by my energy. Would you like to be my friend?” She smiled at River, seemingly oblivious to River’s slightly horrified expression. Truly, she noticed, just didn’t care very much. Vivienne was determined to have River warm up to her.

“I’m sorry! Did I intrude on you? I didn’t mean to. It’s just, I’m overly curious, you see.”, River simply looked at this girl, trying to comprehend the situation, as she felt a little caught off guard in the moment. Though, before she’d had time to even open her mouth and say anything, Vivienne spoke up again. River’s brain spaced out slightly, feeling a quite defensive feeling creep up on her as Vivienne sat there next to her. How on earth can someone have this much to say in one setting? In some strange way, River was not only intrigued, but also slightly impressed.

River snapped back t reality as she realized she’d just been asked a question. Oh no, what did she just ask? The wheels in her brain spinned quickly and hard, trying desperately to catch what Vivienne had just asked. The girl’s face went slightly blank, “I’m sorry, I’m rambling again, aren’t I. I do that quite a lot. I try not to, but it’s just so hard! You know, I’m not always this energetic. I just get so excited when I meet a new person. I’m always looking to find new friends because I don’t have very many. Most people are too intimidated by my energy. Would you like to be my friend?”, River stared at Vivienne with a slight open jaw. «Uhm... I mean, I’m not really one to make friends I guess...», she said slowly. In River’s opinion, friendship is something one earns through time, and being a friend is not an easy achievement. «As for the question of books», River started, as she remembered the question finally, «I’m equally into the ones of magic as those of muggles, but my favourite is a muggle book called Anna Karenina», she said, a very neutral and cold expression on her face. Expression of emotion was definitely not River’s strong side, sure, she felt emotions like normal, but expressing them was something she found no use in. It was a waste of time and energy, and letting others too far in on who and how you are, was never a good thing. At least not with people one barely knew.
