Why Not Floor Powder?
@Marla Quinlan
Los Angeles, California
Summer. Sweet summer. Koko's trunk seemed heavier than usual as she followed Victor, her adoptive father, and Holmes, her adoptive brother, off of the train platform. This was her last few hours in London before she got on an odd Muggle invention called an airplane to the American city of Tulsa, and then she would get on another airplane to Los Angeles, in California. "Victor," Koko said, catching the man's attention, "Why do we have to switch airplanes?"
Victor laughed. The muggleborn knew a lot about Muggle items and whatnot, so he was somewhat surprised that his family knew so little about it. "It's because the planes use this thing called fuel, and they need more of it because they can't go that far on one tank of fuel." Also, the pricing. Victor didn't state it, but Koko knew. They were fairly wealthy in Wizarding currency, but in Muggle currency they were very limited with their spending.
Koko's arm was beginning to ache from carrying her trunk. Why was it so heavy? The twelve-year-old didn't know for sure, but she certainly had acquired many things since the beginning of the school year. She just didn't think that they would result in something this heavy.
Koko noticed that Holmes had been awfully quiet throughout the trip to their home. "It must have been hard, choosing a parent," Koko said softly to her brother. It had been a simple decision for her, but for the boys it had taken them a long time to choose - both parents bad been kind to them, and they were only nine and a half years old. "I don't want to talk about it," said the blonde boy dejectedly.
-About an hour later-
"Kids, are you ready!?!" Victor shouted through the house.
"YES!!!" Both children shouted. They exited their rooms with trunks and suitcases packed. There was no fireplace in this place, so any floo powder they might have had on them would have been invaluable. The small family got into Victor's car, which interested the children greatly. They then proceeded to drive to the nearest airport.
If someone asked her, Koko would never admit the truth - that she was terrified of the airplane. She refused to take the window seat because she could see outside. And the air pressure... Her ears kept popping, no matter what she did. Holmes seemed equally scared, but Victor was fine with it - he had gone on many plane flights before. It was a long flight before they got to Tulsa, and while the kids were yawning, it was only three in the afternoon there. Next they had to board yet another plane and take a flight a couple of hours long to California.
Koko knew something was up when they kept traveling back in time. What was happening? She felt like she could pass out, but it was still daytime. Victor ushered the two into a rental car, and he drove them to their new home, which was a two-story house. Maybe Koko would finally have a life of acceptance... But she still couldn't shake the feeling that something was up.
ReducioFeel free to godmod Victor and Holmes throughout the thread!

Why Not Floor Powder?
[quote]This was a mistake. Marla had meant to sneak into... Well, she honestly didn't mean anything. She wasn't thinking anything. All the girl could comprehend was that she was stuck in a suitcase, and they were definitely not in Scotland anymore. How did she even fit in there? It was so hard to breathe, she felt like a deformed candy bar compressed in a wrapper. The only noises she could make out were the chatter of people and muffled voices from a man, a boy...? Or girl. Either way, they sounded young. And a very familiar voice. Most likely because she had a few classes with said person who's suitcase she was in and... OH GOD. What if they thought she was stalking them or something?! Marla should have stayed for summer camp at Hogwarts! What if they sent her back home? Marla would rather get hit in the face with a bag of bricks then go back to that hell hole. No way.
However, this could end in a... Good way. If she played her cards right. Which probably wouldn't happen. But hey! Optimism, people. She could give whoever the owner of the suitcase is a sob story about her life and maybe they'll make her waffles, or some other good food. Pesto? Pasta? Anything edible? Okay, now the girl was just torturing herself. All this talk about convincing someone she wasn't obsessive over them and what they did was reminding her of how hungry she was. And thirsty.
"It must have been hard, choosing a parent," Marla had heard from the familiar voice, though muffled it was still relatively understandable. What in the world could that mean? You can't choose your parents. If that was possible, Marla's life would be 500 times better. The young voice replied that he didn't want to talk about it, causing her to furrow her brows. What could that possibly mean? Ugh, it wasn't any of her business. But suitcases were (not surprisingly) really boring. She couldn't help but soak in whatever information or sensory things she could, because if Marla didn't she'd probably go a bit cooky in there. Hopefully she'd be able to get a breath of fresh air soon...
The next few hours were pretty quiet, and... Lacked oxygen. Marla had a large lump growing on her head from bumping into a hard pair of shoes, like, a thousand times. She whimpered to herself, just wanting this hell to be over. This was so stupid! Oh, how she missed Hogwarts right now and its grand, big walls! And now she was in a carpet textured death chamber. Not only that, but it was gross and rumbly and her head was pounding... Plus there was this weird feeling in her ears like there was extra air. Where were they?! Underground? A train? It was driving the girl mad as she tried to put the dots together.
But before she knew it, the popping was over, and Marla was back in the hands of the owner of the suitcase. She wanted to get out of there desperately, but at the same time, it felt like impending doom. What would she say for an excuse as to why she was in their suitcase? It seemed like they were almost ready to unpack, since Marla felt a thump on her head as they went up a few stairs and went through a door. And that was when she had enough.
"Let me out of here!" She yelled, kicking her small legs on the zipper of the suitcase in desperation to get out. The air was spoiled and hot from hours of the same breath, causing her to be damp with sweat. It was maddening, and she needed to leave before she went haywire. The zipper had a small opening to which Marla stuck her fingers out and pushed the zipper until it opened, peeking her head out and taking a deep inhale of fresh air. "Oh my god." She mumbled in relief with a sigh. Looking up, Marla saw an extremely familiar girl. What was her name... Kokonut? Nah. Something like that. She was a Slytherin and they had encountered each other for the first time at the library, though not so eventful that it was something to remember. Giving the girl an equally awkward and apologetic smile, Marla waved.
"Hi." She remarked plainly (and pathetically), in hopes that they wouldn't call the police or anything.

Why Not Floor Powder?
@Marla Quinlan
Koko had barely had time to make it to her room before her trunk started... Jumping? Shouting? What exactly was it doing? She hardly had time to look over at it before a girl popped out. "Holy shit!" Koko exclaimed. "Y-you're that girl from the library!" Koko's golden eyes were wide, but also wary. "What the hell do you think you're doing!?!"
Yes. What the hell did this girl think she was doing in Koko's house!?! Her brand-new house, by the way, that she hadn't even lived in for a day yet. What did this girl think she was doing here? What was her name again? Mala? Malala? Something like that. Koko couldn't remember, and at the moment, she was too pissed off to remember.
Actually, now that the girl thought about it, she wondered how this girl had managed to survive that plane flight if Koko and her siblings had been terrified. Koko glanced over at her barely made bed and furrowed her eyebrows. Damn. She'd have to fix it. "H-How did you get here?" Koko stammered. She couldn't believe that she had carried a girl her age - well, rolled her. Rolling was easier than carrying. Always.
That plane ride had been like hell. Obviously. Even though Koko didn't hate heights... She had to sit by her brother, and that made it all worse. "I-I didn't catch your name. I'm Koko. Uh..." Uh...? What, Koko, did you want to say? Don't be shy! Words rushed through her head as her porcelain face blushed and her eyes turned downwards. Shit. She hadn't meant to embarrass herself.
"If you don't mind getting out of the suitcase..?" The blonde prompted, raising a small eyebrow but not making eye contact with the other girl, the one in her room. She didn't want to. She was too paranoid to care. "I need to unpack." The room was well-arranged, and it was also quite well-suited to her needs. It had a dresser on one side, a queen-sized bed pushed up against the corner of the room, and a nightstand made of birch wood next to the bed. The bed was made with a red quilt and soft pillows, and there were three doors leading out of the room - one to her closet, one to the rest of the house, and one to the bathroom that she (thankfully) did not have to share.
The girl wore a scarlet coloured blouse with airy sleeves and a soft material that she could sleep in. She wore navy blue jeggings on her legs and black ankle-length boots to cover her feet because of course, she hadn't had time to change shoes. The girl's eyebrows furrowed as she bent down, still not making eye contact with the girl in her suitcase, and she took off her boots to reveal the white woollen socks underneath. She also quickly took those off because, well, they were annoying. And really hot.
"Anyway, how did you get in there?" Koko asked, finally making eye contact with the girl. How did she get into Koko's suitcase? It was a question that had to be answered. "And what do you plan to do now that you're here?"

Why Not Floor Powder?
[quote]Flinching as the girl sweared loudly in fear, the color drained from her face. Girl from the library? What the hell was she getting at? When did she go to the libra... Oh. Oh. The day in February. When that weirdo fell on the ground. Kokonut, or whatever her name was, began to interrogate her. Marla didn't blame her. She would be scared too if someone popped out of her trunk like a Jack-In-The-Box on steroids. "I– I don't know!" Her voice was shaky and quick, obviously as panicked as the blonde in front of her. Looking at the ground in complete awe, she shut her eyes tight. Maybe this was all imaginary? And if she opened them the heaving breaths from the Slytherin would be gone, replaced with the low hum of excited students chattering about the summer. Opening them, she was still there. In this... Place. Oh god. She wanted out. She needed out. To go back to Hogwarts. Hyperventilating, she stared at the ground in an attempt to calm down. It wasn't working. No. This was not happening. She was not, under ANY circumstances, going to have a panic attack in front of a fellow student who was practically a stranger. No. No. No.
Distracting her from the feeling of impending doom, Kokonut had asked how Marla got into the suitcase. Oh, if only she knew. Honestly, the lion simply took her chances and hopped into the first bag she saw, hoping it was someone she knew. In a way, she had come across someone she knew, though honestly not anyone she had in mind. She was hoping for someone like Emile, Ruby, Lamik, or Meenauh... People that got her. The only thing this other girl got was pissed off at Marla for... Breaking and entering. Which was fair enough! Marla would be pissed too. Didn't make her want to leave any less by trying to rationalize the situation. "I don't know." She repeated, looking down at the floor. Her mind lacked any other words as if it morphed into a broken record in sheer terror. Honestly, from the lack of air in the plane, she wouldn't be surprised if it physically did flatten.
Surprisingly enough, miss Kokonut seemed to have calmed down, or at least became a little more keen on the idea of having a pet lion for at least a bit of the summer. She introduced herself as Koko, which for some reason took a huge weight off of her shoulders. Or her mouth? For some reason, the tip of her mouth felt like there was something heavy on it, as if the blonde's name was on the tip of it. Literally. "I'm Marla. Quinlan." She stated, saying her full name in two very awkward seconds. As if it couldn't get even more cringy, right? She was wrong. This was awful. Ugh. Home sounded great right about now. If only she had one. That would be great right about now, thanks. Stupid uncle, not letting her stay in the gorgeous meadows of Scotland. She had stayed there for three months after running away from her grandmother's house, who was a complete prick, mind you. And Marla was low maintenance! Couldn't he just... I don't know... Floo powder her to anywhere but here?
Holding back a snicker, Marla stepped out of the suitcase as Koko had requested. Yes, the circumstances were... Shitty, but the suitcase was in a way her safe haven. Even though it was cramped and gross (and after spending so many hours in there, frankly, it smelled), she'd rather be in there than the scary house of miss Koko Kokonut's family. However, maybe it wouldn't be so hard to adjust, she suspected as she scanned the room's surroundings. What truly stood out was the bed. A soft looking warm red comforter that was just calling Marla Quinlan's name. God, did she need to sleep anywhere but in a suitcase again. She'd take the floor, even. The trash bin. Anything but that stupid zipper torture chamber. Fighting back the urge to jump on that bed and fall asleep, she stuck her eyes on Koko. "It looks nice." Exclaimed the redhead in an attempt to clear the air. It probably wouldn't work, but it was worth a shot. She stretched her legs, releasing a built-up tension in her joints that had come from being in the fetal position for such a long time. It felt like heaven to spread out, take as much space up as possible. To make her mark. To not be hidden. A smile tugging on her lips, she twiddled with her thumbs to direct her equally nervous and giddy energy somewhere other than her voice.
Another way that would be stupendous for releasing energy would be taking a goddamn shower. Something she hadn't done in... What, a day or two? And god, she was soaked in sweat. As if she just strolled right into a water park with all her clothes on. What was previously a nice emerald green blouse was now a damp and cool mess of wrinkly rags that desperately needed to be quarantined in a washing machine. Her once fiery hair now looking... Extinguished and dull, her forehead and roots shiny with sweat. What could she say? It was hot in there. And in the summer, no less! It was Chinese water torture but with bodily fluids, which made it that much worse.
Oh, and here came the big question from Koko the Prophet: How did she get in there? It seemed that she was intent on getting an answer since she asked not once, but twice. Marla sighed, plopping herself on the floor and drumming her heels lightly on the polished wooden floors. How could she word this? 'Uhh yeah I ran away a year ago and I literally don't have a home so I just went in a random bag and hoped for the best'? Uhh... No. Nobody was finding about that fiasco. She'd just keep it vague. Leave her wanting more. Wait, no, not like that. Leave her... Ignorant? Ugh. You get it. "Uhm... I don't really have anywhere to this summer. Kind of just took a gamble with the suitcases and I got yours." She shrugged, avoiding eye contact with her piercing amber eyes. The last thing she needed was to be guilted into telling the whole story. She deserved to know, and Marla knew that, but it was too humiliating. The words would probably never come out of her lips. Ever. Unless she was threatened with her life. Hopefully, the snake wouldn't go to those lengths.
"You think I know?" Marla half-joked in response to Koko's last question. Yes, she was kidding around, but it was true. She had no idea. What would she do? Sleep on her floor? In her basement without permission? In fact, it just hit her that she had no idea where she was. Obviously not in England. Or Scotland. So where could she have been? She had never been outside of the United Kingdom, so it wasn't like the Gryffindor had any sense of culture or her surroundings. The only thing she knew were the stormy days of England and thick snippety Scottish accents. And the occasional fist fight. But that was on a good day. So far she hadn't seen a single cloud in the sky, heard a single Scot, or a complete brawl, to her dismay... Which meant that she had to ask the question."Where the hell are we, anyways?" It was reasonable, for as far as Marla knew, they could be on another planet. Another galaxy. Far away from anyone else, isolated from the world. While that was definitely not the case, the girl couldn't help being dramatic. In an idea situation, they would be close. Close enough to Scotland to hop back on a train to Hogwarts and close enough for her to simply plop into the soft, inviting bed that had laid in the Gryffindor common room for plenty of other Gryffindor girls before her. And oh, how she missed that too soft old thing. The way that she sunk into it perfectly as soon as she hit the surface. Like she was floating on water effortlessly, or a cloud. Nothing could compare. Even the most expensive of beds. All she wanted was to be back. Oh, and how she pleaded to whatever was up there that she could go back. But worst case scenario, she wouldn't. So, she asked the question that she had been dreading most of all. "...And would I be able to stay here, possibly?"
Distracting her from the feeling of impending doom, Kokonut had asked how Marla got into the suitcase. Oh, if only she knew. Why Not Floor Powder?
@Marla Quinlan
Marla. So that was this crazy suitcase-hopper's name. Koko didn't know what to think about her... Yes, she was terrifying. But Koko could put up with this type of terrified. She gazed at the girl. "Sarcasm, eh? You'll fit in very well around here." She did not answer the girl's question about whether or not she could stay, because the Prophet named Koko did not know. She would have to ask her father...
Sure enough, he was outside her room. Koko held up her index finger at Marla, signalling for her to wait a moment. "Victor!" she shouted. He glanced at her, eyeing his adopted daughter with confusion. "Yes, Koko?"
"Uh... So there's this girl that I found in my suitcase. Can she stay?" Victor's eyes widened - this was obviously not what he had expected. "Oh... Oh... Of... Sure. Does she have anywhere else to go?" Koko shook her head, and then her father nodded. "Fine," he said begrudgingly.
She was sure that Marla must have heard all of this, but it didn't really matter. She would still relay the information to the other girl anyway. "Yeah, it's fine with Victor. I think we have a spare bedroom or something that you can use. There's some food in the kitchen, which is down that hall and towards the left." Koko kept her steady golden gaze on Marla. "If you need anything, just tell me or my family. We'll help you." Sure, she wasn't positive about that, but it would probably work out fine.
Koko began to unpack her suitcase whenever Marla hopped out, still watching the other girl. "We're in America. Los Angeles. In California." The blonde's voice was quite devoid of emotion, something that had once been normal for her but now was absurd and uncommon. Sure, it was normal for her sister, who would be arriving sometime after the 20th of July, but it was nothing normal for Koko. She openly felt things.
The flat was open and large, and it had a moderately large backyard, which meant that it was very expensive. In Los Angeles, it was difficult to get a house like this, close to the beach, and also with a wonderful yard. Well, the yard was large for a house in the city. It was relatively small compared to, say, a house in the country, but it was large enough for Koko. Out of her window, you could see the ocean battling the sand, and then you could also view the sunset if you looked out at the right time. Koko loved having a window on the west side of the house.
"Make yourself at home," the girl sighed, diving through her suitcase once more. This mood... it was tense, and it scared her.

Why Not Floor Powder?
[quote]This fucking blowed. She cursed to herself about a million times in her head, regretting even the thought of shoving herself in a suitcase. Glancing at a small trashcan in the corner, she noted the location of it just in case she was going to hurl, because it sure as hell felt like she was going to. A weak laugh escaped her lips as the blonde mentioned sarcasm. "I hope. If I'm going to be here for a few days. Well– if you're parents let me, that is.." She trailed off awkwardly, playing with her fingers.
All of a sudden, Koko began calling for someone named Victor, to which a sudden wave of panic hit her in the face like a brick. Oh god. What if he said she couldn't stay? What would she do? Would he sell her to some rando on the side of the road? Her legs turned to jelly as she heard footsteps getting louder, and louder until a grown man was upon the door frame. "Hello." She murmured shakily, much higher-pitched than her normal voice with a small wave. Everything was a blur. Koko had bluntly asked if Marla could stay, and he just said yes? Just like that? Weird. But it was better than becoming homeless for two months. Especially if she didn't know where in the world she was.
Relief washed over her as soon as the man left. He seemed sweet, but for some reason, Marla found adults scary. She would never admit it, of course, that would make her seem weak. And she was definitely not weak. But after years of murmured judgemental remarks making their way to her ears, another sharp stab of criticism... It shattered her. Like fragile glass. People, in general, stressed her out. What if she wasn't enough? Disappointing? It was overwhelming. Suffocating. Just the thought of it made a threatening amount of bile crawl up her throat. She gulped it down quickly and cleared her throat, shaking her head.
"Thank you. Really. I mean it." She urged. This girl barely knew Marla and was allowing her to seek refuge at her house? Not many had shown her this type of hospitality. She didn't know whether to scream or to cry, but she suppressed both and just gave the pretty girl a smile. "You don't happen to have floor powder here, do you?" Waiting for her answer, she realized that she jumbled up her words and put her hands on her cheeks. "Sorry– I'm spazzing out. Floo powder. Do you have floo powder." Please say yes, she begged in her mind so strongly that it began to pound. While their house was nice, almost too nice, with the smell and heaviness of salt in the air, and just a glance to the right was a gorgeous view of the ocean and golden sand, so wondrous and bright it was an understatement to say that it could take your breath away... There was this underlying feeling in her gut that she had to leave. This wasn't home. The only place that she felt at home was Hogwarts, the usually overcast cloudy skies putting a blanket of safety around her, something that she had never felt before stepping into that ginormous magical castle.
As soon as she asked where they were, Marla knew that she was in deep shit when the girl said America. Los Angeles? California? What the hell was California? She knew what America was (she didn't live under a rock, people). But god, did she wish that she paid attention in history class in primary school right about now. The name California did.. Not ring a bell. But one thing was certain: they were not in Europe anymore. She felt all the air leave her lungs, so much that she retreated back into the suitcase. "America? Fuuuuuck." She murmured, cupping her hands over her mouth. She could really use that trashcan in the corner right about now. "Do people really live off of Cheetos and french fries here?" Her voice cracked, looking up at Koko, her golden eyes being reluctantly filled with tears. This was much, much more embarrassing than being caught sweaty and exhausted in a suitcase.
"Can I, for the love of God, take a shower?" She pleaded in response to Krazy for Koko Puff's statement to make herself at home. She needed all this sweat and grime to go down the drain. Just a warm shower to melt all her worries away. It would be temporary... But temporary is better than nothing.

Why Not Floor Powder?
Koko's blonde hair fell in her face as she rummaged through the suitcase, biting her lower lip somewhat anxiously. She wasn't looking forward to this very much, but at the same time, she didn't care. Her golden eyes darted over to the threshold of the door where her cat was sitting, and she had an urge to go pet him. She felt quite anxious as she wondered what this would hold for her. Someone staying... At her house...
"It's fine," the blonde sighed, picking up a shirt and folding it. "Anything to help a random stranger." A wry grin crossed her face as she thought about just how odd this situation really was. This was a person that she had never met; that she did not know the name of. She didn't know this other girl's mannerisms or how she might react to something. She'd have to be careful. People seemed to take everything as an offense these days; it would be best to not speak until she was absolutely sure of what she was going to say.
The next thing that the other person said, however, was quite interesting. "Floor powder?" Koko echoed, a golden eyebrow lifting. She smirked and turned away from her suitcase, bending down and brushing her finger against the floor. She then walked over to Marla and held out her hand. "This is Floor Powder." Koko was about to burst out with laughter on the inside, but on the outside she only showed a sardonic smile. Then Marla corrected herself, and the grin finally broke out. "Okay, good," she laughed, her words breathy with laughter as the girl's chest heaved. "We might. I don't know. I've never had any need to use it."
Koko stood up straight, brought her dust-covered finger to her lips, and she blew on it, making the dust go back into the air. "Someone once said 'we are but dust and shadows'. 'Pulvis et umbra sumus.'" She said the words quietly, where Marla could hear them if she listened but it was more of a musing. "So maybe this dust... Maybe it has magical properties. One will never know." Koko strode over to the window and opened it a crack, allowing the dust to escape as well as allowing salty air to rush in, making her hair fly back in the wind. Koko inhaled deeply, her cheeks reddening because of the sudden rush of air. She wasn't used to living so close to an ocean, but it wasn't as if she didn't like it. She just wasn't used to it. Like, at all. She would be able to go swimming every day that she was at home, and that much made her smile. However, she was now nervous. She lived on earthquake territory. There could be tsunamis if she wasn't careful. Surprisingly, that didn't scare her too badly, but it was still a lingering fear.
"Cheetos?" That was what stuck out to her. "I've never eaten a single Cheeto in my life. As for French Fries... I could live off of those forever, but I would feel terrible. I almost got turned into one once, you see..." Her brow furrowed as she remembered the moment when Fridge had had the opportunity to turn her into a french fry. French fries might have tasted wonderful, but being one wasn't a good thing. Not at all. Then people would try to taste you... The salty air suddenly reminded Koko of the salt on french fries and a shiver ran up her spine, so the girl slammed the window shut. "I could probably get you some if you wanted. It's all packaged and processed though," Koko offered without looking at Marla.
Her gaze finally flitted to the redhead when she asked about a shower. "Am I going to be able to stop you? No. There's one down the hall. Uh... Kind of... Third door to the right, I think." She sighed. "I don't know my way around, either." Her real home was their old apartment in London. She missed it although she didn't miss Rosalie and Charlie very much... She wanted to go back. Koko knew she would love the temperate climate here in Los Angeles, but she felt terrible that she wouldn't get to experience the feel of London until she went back to Diagon Alley for school supplies. At least there was still a buzz of people here. That much would feel like home. A smile crossed Koko's face as she remembered. "Oh, and turn left for hot water. Right is cold. Good luck, don't burn yourself!"
