I'm assuming Mom left again after I went to Hogwarts. Real shocker there, but it doesn't matter. Is Dad around? He probably should be, now that I'm gone, and he probably won't be working overtime for a while. If he's not, then I trust you can take care of yourself, or at least the babysitters/nannies/whatever can.
But really, how have you been? Are you doing okay? You do know how to cook your own stuff, right? I mean, if the babysitter/nanny/whatever could do it, that's fine too, I guess. As long as everything is taken care of, I won't bug you about it. As I said, I trust you. I'm not even going to bother asking how you're doing in your studies- you're probably just asking for extra work at this point. Keep up the good work, you nerd. Try not to bug Ms. Walsh too much about that (not that she'll mind anyway. She loves you).
As for me, it turns out I'm like Dad. I'm a Hufflepuff. Guess that means you'll be calling me a Puffball from now on (but seriously, if you do that, I'll stop talking to you forever). Knowing you, you'll probably end up in Mom's house. Either that, or it's Ravenclaw. You'd fit right in with the rest of the nerds, no question about that. But we'll see in a few years.
Life's busy these days. I'm already getting twice the amount of homework that we usually get from Ms. Walsh. Plus, magic is super complicated. There's so many components in getting the spell right, and while it looked so easy in theory, it's really not. Plus, Transfiguration is the worst. It's like Math, except there's so many equations you have to solve for, and you actually have to apply it while casting spells. How do you even do that? Wait, don't answer that. You probably don't know yet, unless you've been reading something about it. But anyway, I think once you get here, you'll get the hang of it. You're a good student, and a huge nerd. This stuff should be a piece of cake for you. Hopefully not literally.
I'm still getting used to things in Hogwarts and having to accept the fact that there are significantly less things to do outside now. Apparently they don't have any other sports and outdoor activities besides Quidditch. Oh well. At least there's lots of things to do inside. You'll probably love the library, though. There's so many books there, and you'll definitely find a lot of things to pass the time. There's also the study room, which I'm sure you'll be spending a lot of time there (for obvious reasons). There's a lot of places, really. I'm still getting lost, and it's worse because every time I go up the stairs, they keep changing. Seriously, who came up with that stuff? I swear the school is just trying to find ways to torture us.
That's it for me, I guess. I'll send a letter to Dad soon, so look out for that one. Mom probably doesn't need one, unless she can take the time off her job to read it. Hope you enjoy your alone time, by the way.

You are correct to assume that Mom left. Her job has been taxing as of late, perhaps even more than usual. At least that was what Dad says anyway. Speaking of him, he is around, yes. However, he is still needed in the hospital, and therefore he leaves others to take care of me. But do not worry about that. I am still able to properly look after myself.
I am fine. Everything is more quiet when you aren't around, but that may be a good thing. It has been tiring hearing you shout over the smallest of things and making a big deal out of nothing. That was a joke, by the way, in case you could not tell by the tone of this letter. But as you asked, yes, I can cook my own food and take care of myself. As I said, I am not completely incapable of basic tasks, you know. Still, thank you for the concern. As for my studies, I am not asking for extra work. That would be taxing on my tutor, and she already gives me enough work as is. But I am doing well so far, if that is what you want to hear. I am currently learning about the solar system, which is interesting, I suppose. I have yet to finish the unit, but I may let you know how it goes.
How intriguing. A Hufflepuff. I have yet to ask Dad about the house system in Hogwarts, but from what I heard from your conversations, I am not very surprised. You might have made a decent Gryffindor, but I suppose it is fitting that you follow his footsteps. Hufflepuffs are known for their loyalty and determined, and I would sincerely say that you would qualify as those traits. However, now I know for sure that you might actually be softhearted. It is nothing to be concerned about, though I do know how much this annoys you, so I shall bring it up to torment you. Not to worry, I will not call you a Puffball. I do not see the necessity in making fun of you with such a mediocre name. I will also be looking forward to seeing what happens once I go to Hogwarts, I suppose. I do not know for sure which house I will be in, but you are right. I may either end up in Ravenclaw or Slytherin, although I do not care which one I am sorted in. Although I anticipate that I will be harassed either way, so I will prepare myself for that.
That does sound rather complex. I have been reading about magic, and from what I have seen, magic is quite a fascinating concept. Of course, I have yet to use it in a practical sense, but I look forward to it. Good luck to you, though. You may not have been the best at Math, but you were not horrible at it either. I am sure you will get it eventually. Possibly.
And thank you. I will be sure to take a look at those particular rooms once I can actually attend the school. I will also make sure to heed your warning on the oddities of the school. As for getting lost, I suppose it will take some time to get used to the layout of the school. You were always one to find your way around things, anyway. You should be fine, I believe.
That will be it for me, as well. I do not intend to keep you from your studies, and I also do not want to distract myself. I will let Dad know about your letter, by the way. As for Mom, I suppose it cannot hurt to try. At worst, she will not be able to read it, but if you believe your time is better spent on something else, then I respect your decision.
