Try To Be Normal
Coden followed his father and mother into the shop, awed by the wide array of animals before him. He was hit by the strong smell of animals; cat hair, animal feces, and the bedding that lined the animals cages. Eagerly, he scanned the room, wondering which animal would be the one for him.
There were owls, rats, toads, cats, and some strange balls of fluff that jumped around their cages. While his parents muttered to each other in hushed voices in the center of the room, he went from cage to cafe, peeking in at each animal he saw.
The owls were interesting, but he knew if he got one, Reine would hate him for it. She could barely stand near one without freaking out. He poked his fingers in the cage of one snowy owl, grinning as it nipped at his fingers affectionately.
"Coden," His mum called out from behind him, "Come here for a moment."
He made his way over to her, wondering what she wanted. "Yea?"
"Well," She cleared her throat, "Your father and I think it would be best if- if you decided on a pet that would be... more typical."
"What do you mean?"
His father stepped in as his mum looked away guiltily, "We would like it if you picked a pet that your siblings would see as normal, since they don't know about all this 'magic'."
Coden tried not to show his hurt on his face. For once in his life he was getting more attention than his siblings over something, an now his parents just wanted to act like it never happened. "You mean you don't want me to ever tell them?"
His father shook his head, avoiding looking Coden in the eyes. Coden didn't answer, turning on his heel and walking over to the cats. "Oh, uh, we can't get a cat, dear, you know your sister has her allergies." His mum called out behind him.
He ignored her, reaching into the cage to pet the orange cat that stared at him with glowing gold eyes. He heard a squeaking from next to him, and looked over to see a gray rat skittering around his cage. He drew back his hand from the cat, bending over to peer into the rat's cage.
He stuck his fingers in the cage, and the rat came nervously to him, sniffing his fingers. Coden smiled, turning to his parents, "Is this one normal enough for you?"
