Being bored was truly a horrible thing, especially for an eleven-year-old child who had a knack for letting her curiosity get the best of her. And Raine Titania Sage was definitely a curious child. The firstie walked through the corridors on her floor searching through empty rooms before deciding to take the stairs up two flights to the seventh floor where the Astronomy tower and Headmaster's office were located. She attempted to open some of the doors on that floor, but while a handful of the doors opened and she was able to see the dusty or used classrooms beyond, most of the doors were locked. She even dared to touch the door that led to the Astronomy tower. No one was allowed up there but the young Gryffindor also didn't plan to get caught. Unfortunately, the door was locked and, with a sigh, Raine continued walking through the corridors.
She was lucky that it wasn't after curfew. It was just a little past six in the evening and everyone was still chowing down in the Great Hall when Raine took it upon herself to leave dinner to get a headstart on her homework. However, while sitting on her bed doing her Charms work, the girl suddenly lost interest and chose to walk the corridors with her secret present in her pocket.
The corridors weren't so dark, as the castle was still lively and professors and students were up and about. She passed by a few ghosts and some portraits of old people definitely did peer at her with suspicion, but Rain just continued her walk and observing everything her little mind could take in. She opened a door on her right and it opened straight into a brick wall. Raine put her hand on the solid wall and wondered if there was a spell covering up something secret or if it was meant to be there in the first place. Looking back down the hall, she counted the doors that led up to this particular door and made a note of it. She didn't know what she would need to know this information for, but she had it stored now as one of the many unimportant discoveries. Continuing down the hall, she happened to come across a set of stairs that seemingly continued to spiral up and up.
These must lead up to the Headmaster's office. she surmised.
Craning her head, Raine tried to see if the stairs would ever stop, but then she heard footsteps coming from a separate hallway and quickly ducked behind a set of armor. Ahead of her came a fifth-year Hufflepuff Prefect who was holding onto some papers. They began their journey up the staircase and Raine took it upon her self to tip-toe behind the older student, taking the stairs much slower than the other student was.
I remember overhearing some of the older students discussing the riddle to the Headmaster's office one day in the common room. One of them apparently couldn't answer the riddle and something happened to him. Does that mean that the Headmaster's office is locked with only a riddle? The girl thought this as she continued to walk slowly and carefully behind her upperclassman so as to not alert the boy to her presence. He soon reached the top, and Raine was following quickly behind him. Curiosity enveloped the girl's face when she saw that the boy didn't have to speak or even said anything as he entered the office. She followed right after him and hid behind one of the ancient pieces of furniture in the office, waiting for the Prefect to walk back out of the room. She was quite surprised that when the boy left the room, the door stayed open.
That's curious. Why wouldn't he close the door behind him when he left?
Thinking herself alone, Raine looked around the room. It was filled with a lot of old furniture and the girl had to wonder if this was what all old people liked to have in their homes. Her grandparents on her mother's side also like having old furniture everywhere. Walking around the room, she looked up at the ceiling, taking in the large telescopic items/ On the wall were all of the portraits of the older Headmasters of Hogwarts. Walking over to the left-hand wall, she saw the sleeping portraits of two Headmasters from nineteen years prior to now. Her mother had the pleasure of being taught by one of them and having the other as her Headmaster before she graduated. She would tell Raine all sorts of stories about the two men as a way to entertain her daughter that constantly fought her bedtime. She wished that they were awake so that she could ask them questions or just talk to them in general.
It's getting a little toasty in here. Raine took off her school robes and hung them over her small arm. Moving over to the Headmaster's desk, she saw a few knickknacks on his desk and reached out to pick up an odd looking object, only to pull her hand back at the last second. "Daddy always said to look with my eyes and not with my hands. I shouldn't touch what isn't mine, even if it looks interesting,"she whispered to herself as she looked at the small, strange, sword-like object on the desk. Moving to the other end of the room, she could hear the gentle breathing of the Headmaster's pink Pygmy Puff and smiled as she saw the little ball of fluff move up and down in rhythm. She wanted to pet it, but she wasn't sure if it would be shocked away and bite her.
That would be a lovely conversation to have with the nurse. 'Miss Sage, how did you get hurt?' 'Oh I just snuck into the Headmaster's office and touched his Pygmy Puff. No big deal.' she thought wryly and she moved away from the cute little animal.
The Headmaster's chair was empty, of course, and Raine was a bit tired from her wanderings, so she figured she would just sit down for a moment to relax her legs. Placing her robe on the desk away from the paperwork, the Gryffindor sat in the high backed chair and sighed in relief.
What she didn't expect was the sudden voice that would sound like an echo around the office.

Stone walls on every side of this circular room bore the faces, some sleeping and some curiously watching, of the former Headmasters of Hogwarts. Their esteemed faces were warmly lit under a candlelit chandelier and a crackling fire in the hearth. The sorting hat sat on a high shelf, one too high for a child except perhaps in a few years Prefect Lowe could reach. The sorting hat would start to sing a song almost every child knew:
in entertainment of itself. Otherwise the room was silent less the whir of unmarked and ill-defined silvery and coppery devices that stood on spindle-legged tables scattered about the room. The room had not changed since Headmaster Winslow and Blackburn had left, the only mark Solomon had made was the tiny, furry critters that scampered underfoot. There was not one but a dozen or so, with their little glassy eyes that peered with a curiosity at the snooper. The Headmaster had a soft-spot for Pygmy Puffs -- both purple and pink, and like an infestation confined to this singular space little eyes would peer around massive tomes and various mystical and mundane baubles.
The Headmaster was not there, but he often kept his office unattended. There was little to fear for the Headmaster, between the witnesses hung upon the walls, the distant descent to a non-staff room and the fact that he was usually not very far.
While Raine might not have pet the Pygmy Puff, the Pygmy Puff had taken a keen interest in her. It would wobble and roll a bit in her direction, let out a small disquisitive noise before it would stop as close as the surface of the desk would allow it to Rain. Then without warning its tiny little mouth would open, much like a frog's tongue a long, slender, sticky tongue would shoot out and attempt to lodge itself in Raine's nose. Then wiggle about before retrieving a fantastical golden nugget from the young Gryffindor.
This would garner the attention of the other Pygmy Puffs, they would topple and roll, some with a bit of bounce in Raine's direction. Yes, the puffs were hungry it would seem.

Raine screeched and quickly put a hand to her nose in shock. Eyes wide she backed away from the desk. The Sorting Hat had already startled her horrendously but then the damned pygmy puff decided it wanted to snack on her nose? If she was ever going to get a pet it definitely wasn't going to be one of those things now!
"Ugh...that was so...gross!" the girl cried and shuddered as she wiped at her nose. She saw a box of tissues on her Headmaster's desk and reached for one, using it to wipe the inside of her nose from all of the slimy tongue juices. She turned to walk out of the office but tripped over something, falling onto her hands and knees with a short shout of alarm.
"What was that?" she groaned as she looked down at her feet. There, sitting there in its full out puff glory, was another pygmy puff. And it was staring at her with its beedy eyes that still made it look cute. But Raine was more nervous about it since the one on the desk attacked her nose. She looked up at the desk to give that one a glare only to see...
That it was gone.
"Where..."
A squeak near her head had her look up again and see that two pygmy puffs were in front of her. Gasping, the Gryffindor crawled on her hands and knees away from the creatures. Turning to face the approaching fluff balls, she didn't see when her hand inched closer to a fourth one. Gasping again, Raine stood up quickly. The pygmy puffs on the floor began their little waddle-roll like walks toward her and Raine held her robe closer to her person. She still had yet to realize that the robe was upside down. The little 'present' in her pocket was slowly being dislodged and inching its way toward freedom, but not yet. It was snagged on a piece of thin fabric inside of the robe pocket.
Backing away from the creatures, Raine ended up against the wall near one of the old bookcases. "How many of these things does one man need?!" She thought frantically as she looked around to see more approaching her person. She didn't want to harm the creatures by accidentally stepping on them in her haste to escape...they were still cute and they were the headmaster's pets after all. But she also didn't want her nose to be attacked again!
The thought of that had the girl put a hand up to her nose as protection, and she looked at the open door, hoping that the Headmaster or a teacher would return to save her soon.

The first Pygmy Puff slurped a delicious booger and cooed with delight. It wanted more. With a rolling, bouncing gait as Raine recoiled in disgust and tried to back away, a tissue to her nare it would strike again attempting to retrieve a second pot of gold from the young Gryffindor.
The Pygmy Puff's delighted noise only drew the attention of the others, little spheres of purple and pink that squeezed from tight and narrow spaces, little cozy nests throughout the office. It was not just a handful, it was a veritable swarm. She would trip over one, eye level with a particularly fluffy rascal that would bob and tip to the side eyeing her with curiosity. She would look back to find the hungriest of all Pygmy Puffs had disappeared.
Yes, she was being stalked.
The other Pygmy Puffs would be abuzz, some made little noises more akin to a high-pitched purr. They would approach but keep their distance, the stress that emanated off of Raine was a detractor. They would converge upon the unfortunate youth. The bravest, the instigator, would emerge looking like a clone of the others on either side. It's long stick tongue would shoot out and miss the girl. However, Greg was not alone. The other Gregs would unleash a hailstorm of tongues, apparently boogers were a delicacy but there was also earwax.
And of course some of these terrible monsters just wanted to cuddle.

Raine looked at the little creatures in front of her and put her hands in front of her nose and mouth, leaving only a bit of space for her to breath. She definitely didn't want the little beasts to dig in her nose. Their beady eyes were gazing at her intently. Looking around, she saw some of the older headmasters and headmistresses looking on curiously at her plight. Some were even chuckling, the jerks. How could they laugh at her? They could at least help her by moving through the paintings to alert a teacher of her plight! Or they could even distract the little puff balls so that she could get away!
"You know, noses are not the only thing those creatures like," a voice said from nearby, "They also seem to enjoy-"
Raine screamed loudly in shock as a slimy, sticky tongue shot out and entered her ear canal. "OH. MY...WHAT THE HELL?!" she screeched in annoyance and disgust.
Using the sleeve of her robes, she began to wipe at her ear. Unfortunately, she had to use both hands to do this task: one to hold the bulk of the robes and the other to use the cloth for her ear. The action left her nose wide open for another attack.
"Gah!" she cried out as a brightly colored puffball sucked its tongue back into its mouth. They were all licking their lips and Raine had finally had enough.
"Screw this!" she said as she lifted her robes and put them over her head, leaving a bit of a pocket that would allow her to see the floor. She was irritated with the creatures but she still didn't wish to accidentally step on or hurt them. Hopping over the group that was crowded by her feet, Raine attempted to make a mad dash to the entrance of the office. She never realized that the dungbomb in her pocket had finally dislodged itself from where it was snagged in her robe pocket. From the height and the jostle, the little brown ball fell harshly onto the ground and instantly a foul smell began to circulate and float around the room.
"Oh for the love of..." Raine's eyes teared up from the smell as she finally made her way outside of the Headmaster's office, coughing and trying to clear her airways. She stood on the platform that connected to the stairs, looking into the room through watery eyes. She didn't intend for that to happen. She hoped that the little, annoying, disgusting, Pygmy Puffs didn't suffer from the horrid smell.

Those cute little adorable cooing, bouncing balls of joy that likes being thrown and bounced would suffer on this terrible day. It started out well and good, lounging about the Headmaster's office, keeping warm at the side of the hearth. Cozy nests throughout the office in bookshelves and beneath desks and tables. It was the best of lives with these fluffy little creatures, a steady supply of sleeping children on the floors adjacent during the night they were well fed boogers and spiders.
They swarmed young Raine. Some to cuddle, some to feast. The little girl would have the cleanest ears and nose. It was as if they had tickled her brain with their long, moist, slightly sticky tongues. From the crusts of her eyes to the lint on her clothes, it was a barrage of little Pygmy Puff tongues. The first year Gryffindor would attempt to flee, a dung bomb escaping from her pocket.
A cloud of noxious gas would bloom. Raine's clean nose and being at the epicenter of this disaster, she would get the strongest lungful. It was terrible -- like a rotted egg farted into a sulfurous vat of month old fish. Then she would hear it: this cacophony of squeaks. They were screams, the unfortunate Pygmy pulls would stop in their tracks and call to the side. Some were still twitching.

"Greg!" Solomon shouted as he scooped a few of his fallen pets. "Other Greg!" He picked up another one. "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!" Solomon shouted. There were several 'dead' Pygmy Puffs at Raine's feet.

Raine flinched and backed up further from the chaos and the angry Headmaster. She had never heard the Headmaster raise his voice before and it was quite unnerving. When she saw him pick up one of the pygmy puffs, she felt her guilt at hurting the little guys deepen. She never meant to hurt the little puff balls.
As much as the girl wanted to return to her common room and pretend that nothing had ever happened, she instead moved back into the office to stand near the kneeling Headmaster. Standing out of arms reach from the man, Raine knealt by a...Greg... that was laying on its side, twitching, and poked it gently.
"Are...are they dead?" she asked softly.
She really hoped that the little pygmy puffs weren't seriously injured...or dead. Raine wasn't a psychopath. She didn't enjoy hurting animals and she definitely didn't go out of her way to kill them. And as gross as the Headmaster's cluster of Gregs were, she didn't wish death upon them. They were cute...from a distance.
"I-I'm really sorry, Professor. I didn't mean...I mean...well..." Raine swallowed the lump in her throat. "I didn't mean to hurt them. I swear."
Raine warily watched the Headmaster and wondered what he would do to her. Would he give her detention for the rest of the term and all of next year? Would he write to her parents? Would he make her work to pay for more pygmy puffs?
Would she be told not to return to Hogwarts for her second year?
All of these thoughts swirled around in the young Gryffindor's head as she continued to watch her Headmaster and wait for his response to her dungbomb going off and harming his pets.

Raine would not have been the first destructive youth to traverse Solomon's office. What young Miss Sage did not know was that Pygmy Puffs were the cockroach of the magical world -- not in the fact that they were vermin in need of immediate eradication but rather in the fact that they, like cockroaches were nigh near indestructible and could quite possibly survive an atomic attack. A little stink bomb was not going to destroy these little guys, they were simply intelligent little monsters and a bit of drama would lure the poor girl into their trap.
Panicked as she was, Raine was knelt alongside the allegedly 'slain' ball of fluff. She would poke it, the little guy would dramatically seize. As Raine tried to eck out an apology, the Pygmy Puff would take this opportunity to strike. Indeed, the Pygmy Puff was a wily creature, the poor girl's nose, ears, eyes and any other conceivable orifice already picked clean by the scavenger herd, Greg -- well several Gregs would do their second favorite thing. They tucked and rolled into little furry, bouncy balls and with a mighty bounce -- well bounces, they would propel themselves in Raine's direction.
For what terrible, malicious purpose?
--Snugs.
Yes, that was the end game plan of these diabolical balls of fur. Snugs. Two would find their way onto her shoulders, one tangled in her hair, another on her crown, one had grabbed hold of a pocket and was trying to wiggle its way inside.
Solomon let out a laugh. "They like you," he commented. Well, they liked everyone so the statement could be taken with a grain of salt. "And, Pygmy Puffs are the perfect pet because they are darn near impossible to kill... the perfect choice pet for a reckless youth or Headmasters with overly curious students." Yes, the Pygmy Puffs were his defense and early warning system. Nobody was getting in here unmolested. The sound of purring like a motor engine could be heard on either side of Raine's head. "I am sure they will be fine," he concluded as he casually took a seat in his large, plush leather chair. "Did you need anything or are you here to prank me?"

Yes, that was the end game plan of these diabolical balls of fur. Snugs. Two would find their way onto her shoulders, one tangled in her hair, another on her crown, one had grabbed hold of a pocket and was trying to wiggle its way inside.
Solomon let out a laugh. "They like you," he commented. Well, they liked everyone so the statement could be taken with a grain of salt. "And, Pygmy Puffs are the perfect pet because they are darn near impossible to kill... the perfect choice pet for a reckless youth or Headmasters with overly curious students." Yes, the Pygmy Puffs were his defense and early warning system. Nobody was getting in here unmolested. The sound of purring like a motor engine could be heard on either side of Raine's head. "I am sure they will be fine," he concluded as he casually took a seat in his large, plush leather chair. "Did you need anything or are you here to prank me?"

Curiosity is sometimes a stinky mess
Raine stilled as the little fluff balls began to crawl all over her, snuggling into her hair, one plopping itself down on her head, two more on each shoulder, and a final one that was struggling to climb into her pocket. With a little tap, the girl would help the little Pygmy Puff fall adorably into her pocket before it poked its little head out of its new hiding spot.
But Raine was still nervous. The last time she let her guard down around these guys they attacked every orifice on her body that was open to them. So forgive the young Gryffindor for being a bit wary and nervous about the cute yet aggressive beasts.
She did breathe a sigh a relief when Headmaster Lear informed her about the durability of the Pygmy Puff, only wincing when he mentioned"overly curious students." It was almost as if he knew that she had no business being there. And when he asked her whether or not she came to his office to prank him or for legitimate business, she froze. How would one get away with saying that she actually did plan to prank someone and his office just happened to be available? Would he give her detention for even thinking of pranking someone else? Her initial target had been to harass Professor Thurston as he was never seen unless she had Astronomy and she had wanted to at least get him to leave the tower. She never imagined coming into the Headmaster's office for the sole purpose to prank him.
But would he even believe her?

I was just bored, and then I saw your office open, so I came to look and investigate. I was just curious, is all. But my curiosity just ended up in a stinky mess."

It did not matter if it was true or not, no harm, no foul. The Pygmy Puffskeins were the perfect pet by virtue of the fact that they are adorable, curious, friendly and virtually indestructible. "Don't worry about it," the Headmaster ceded with a wave of his hand. While gross, the creatures were completely and utterly harmless. The students were a greater danger to themselves than Solomon's pets were. Professor Bonaparte was an absolute madman for insisting on the removal of these glorious creatures.
Solomon would simply find his way behind his desk and take a quill to his hand. This was the average Friday for the Professor as of late. A curious student. More curious pets. A bit of yelling. Thankfully nothing was on fire at the very least. "Dungbombs have a sudden, noxious effect that disperses anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours depending on the target and the aeration of an area," this room would likely have that rotten scent for some time. "You will almost always be caught in the crossfire," he advised. "I find glitter in copious amounts to be equally harmless but a bit more taxing to manage. You'll still be caught in the crossfire, that stuff gets everywhere... but girls your age would likely consider it to be a fashion statement." He explained matter of factly. A sense of humor or a trick? That would be for Raine to decide. "Confetti might be easier to come by because you can make it yourself," he added as an afterthought as he started to write something out on a bit of parchment.
