a memory from the house that built me
may 11th - post blossom ball
By the end of the letter, his fingers shook and ink spilled over them, staining his fingernails black. What he could not say was killing him inside, minute by minute. His letters blurred together. The secrets mobbed him, dying to be put on the drying paper. But with a lump in his throat, Isaac folded and creased the scroll in his fingers, and sealed it clumsily with a ribbon. This would do.Hi Mam,
It's been a while, hasn't it? I know you must be worrying about me again, and maybe Beth is too. Or maybe she's still too busy with Natha her new drama production.
I miss you a lot. It hasn't been the same without seeing you every day. I miss rugby a lot too, and the old fall days down at Rye, and even dance class. I'd give an arm and a leg to be twirling down there again.
Brutus' School is tough, tougher than old Rye Community School, and it's dodgy at times. There are a lot of annoying kids, and some snobs. But I've met some new friends and roomates that aren't half bad. I think you'd like Ashton, and Elizabeth and Illowy a lot. Ashton's really shy, but he's a nice guy. Illowy's super tough, and Elizabeth is crazy funny. Sometimes, they remind me of my old mates back home.
How're Asimov and Katie doing? I hope she isn't too lonely without me. Tell her that I wish she were here. And don't let that fat tabby eat any more treats, or he's going to explode before summer.
I hope everything's great Mam. Say hi to everyone for me. Anddon'tbesad.
Sincerely,
Isaac
This was enough.

Hiya Beth!
Hope you haven't forgot me by now. You alright? I know you're busy with your stardom and glamour, but I hope you're happy and everything. Tell Nathaniel hi too. And tell him to shave his beard because he looks like a knockoff Santa Claus with it.
I've had the craziest time over at Brutus'. Y'know, a classroom set on fire because of this insane bloke (don't tell Mam, she'd freak out), and I ended up going to the nurse for a while. But I'm right as rain, I promise! I ended up making some friends along the way too.
There's this really serious girl named Illowy, but she's secretly nice. She's a lot like Princess Eilonwy from the movies, remember her? She invited me to go on this adventure over the summer, and I said yes! I don't know where we're going yet, but it's going to be great. I'm sure.
But you can't tell anyone about it. Tell Mam and Father that I'll be staying at school over the summer. Both of them would box my ears if they knew I was staying with Illowy's family. You know how Dad gets about girls. "Blah blah dating blah..." Bloody hell, we're just friends. Her grandma is coming along too, and maybe even her mom, so it's all fine. Besides, if you tell on me, I'm telling them all about your new wanker boyfriend, and all the snogging you've been doing.
Have you made any other friends at uni? You did tell me that you were working on it, between going to dos. If any of them are ruggers, then you better introduce me.
I really want to meet more of em.
From,
Zack the Quack

Hello Mr. Boarding School,
Why on earth did you send me an owl with a letter? Is this another one of your pranks? Christ, you never change, do you?
My play is going splendid, in fact, I'd say it's a smashing success. We've been doing traditional studies of classic plays, especially Shakespeare's masterpieces, and going over Romeo and Juliet with deep analysis has been so entirely pleasing. We're going to be creating an original play this year, and I do hope Nathaniel and I get the lead roles. We are two perfect stars, meant for the lights of the stage!
I see what you've crossed out Zack, take it back! His beard makes him look dashing, almost like a true hero. The best men in literature have had flattering beards, after all. Odysseus, Achilles, Romeo, and even the ancient Christian writer, Ambrose.
A fire? Are you sure I shouldn't tell Mother about that? And the nurse! By God, don't tell me one of your friends started this fire! I wouldn't put it past you or your chums at all. You did set fire to the playroom at Rye Academy back then, and whose to say that you would not do it again? Please be careful.
But you were so excited to come home for summer, and you'd give that up? It's really cute you care that much about this girl, Zack. My lips are sealed about this vacation (for now), but who knows - in the future I might let it slip a little. It's just too good not to tell anyone about. Really dear, I bet Kathryn would love hearing that you're going on a trip without her, with another girl nonetheless. I saw her during Christmastime, and she was looking quite mopey and alone, complaining about her new school. She misses you.
I swear to God that I won't say anything for a while at least. But if you dare say a single thing to Mother and Father about Nathaniel, then I'm going to tell them about the time you played hooky for a week, or the time you stole Mrs. Dodds phone after the suspension. Nate is my soulmate. I'm sure that he's the one for me, and you better not try and act cheeky to ruin it.
I did make a few friends over here. This girl named Eileen is a brilliant transfer student, and she's read a lot of translated texts and literature. We spend time in the library over coffee and books. Trust you to think of ruggers, of course I haven't made any friends like that! But if I do find a decent one, I'll tell you, you daft duck.
Lots of love,
Elizabeth
