Amanda entered the library, a pile of books that needed to be returned nestled in her arms. She had had a reading craze recently, and was, in fact, still experiencing this particular craze. Most of the books that she had checked out were actually in French, also, as Amanda was looking to teach herself more of the language in an attempt to impress her mother’s side of the family. Plus, it made her feel extremely intelligent to be able to speak another language almost fluently. She had spent many a night poring over the foreign texts, and her hard work was finally beginning to pay off as her French lost its rusty edge. After she handed the books that she had brought in to the librarian, Amanda hurried over to the shelves in search of more challenging books to devour.
Amanda’s fingers brushed lightly against the spines of the books as she browsed the selection that was available to her. The Hogwarts library only had a few books that were in French, and most of them were accompanied by English translations. Originally, Amanda had avoided the ones with translations, but she had quickly breezed through the others and was forced to give up her preferences. As she walked past the books that she had read before, Amanda realized with a dejected sigh that she was running out of new ones. Grabbing what few unread French books remained, she then made her way over to a table to read.
Amanda opened the first book that she had picked out, which was titled “Le Comte de Monte-Cristo”, or in English, “The Count of Monte Cristo”. She had seen this book before, collecting dust on one of her grand-mère’s many shelves. Apparently it was a classic, and just by looking at the amount of pages, Amanda could tell that this novel was going to be a long and difficult one. C’est la vie, she thought to herself as she opened to the first page.
TRANSLATIONS
“C’est la vie.” — “Such is life.”
“Oh, I may be on the side of the angels, but don't think for one second that I am one of them.”

The library was a sanctuary, even if it seemed like everyone enjoyed nothing more than a loud chat inside the high book filled walls. It was still more homey than anywhere else in the castle, and any excuse to get out of the common room was a good one. Elena had finished her homework much earlier and was now just drifting, staring at the books as she walked past, eager to find something interesting.
The Silmarillion was sitting on the bottom shelf of the fantasy section, so the girl grabbed it. Griffith had said she should read it after all, so why not grab it. On the way back past to her comfy chair, there was a ravenclaw with a good prefect, reading a book in another language. Elena stared for a moment, trying to decipher what language it was. In the end the girl assumed it was French, since it seemed to have an overabundance of vowels.
"Wotcher, thought I'd rabbit to you and ask 'bout that Captain there." Elena pointed at the book, "I Adam and Eve it's a Robin."
The cockney rhyming slang was indecipherable but Elena was feeling a bit pissy at Ruka Tan for calling her status as Amazingly Trustworthy Friend™ into question. So she was going full cockney right now, "Perhaps I'll have the Donald to pinch a new China!"
Translation
"Wotcher, thought I'd rabbit to you and ask 'bout that Captain there.": Hello friend, thought I would come and talk to you, mostly to ask about that book you have there.
"I Adam and Eve it's a Robin.": I believe it's a good one.
"Perhaps I'll have the Donald to pinch a new China!": Perhaps I'll have the luck to steal a new friend!
I'm weak my love.
