History/Background Story:

Joy Marianna "Mari" Haynes was born on 13 March 2007 to a witch mother, Isa, and Muggle father, Ewan. She is the eldest child born to Isa and Ewan and has two sisters: Lucy (10) and Grace (4). Upon graduation from Hogwarts, Isa, who was a pure blood and fascinated with the differences between wizard and Muggle world, chose to rotate as a barmaid in both societies. It was during her tenure at Thatcher's Pub that she met Ewan, an accountant from Surrey. Isa did know that happy, half-blooded families were possible; however, coming from a pure blood family, especially one that, while saying that they accepted Muggles, did not always act as such, Isa feared the reparations of revealing herself as a witch. Smitten by Ewan's charm, she abandoned her magical pub, concealed her true identity to her husband, and limited contact with her wizard family. Shortly after their marriage (a private affair), the Hayneses welcomed Mari into their family and Lucy ten months later.

Mari is a small, biracial (black and white) girl with dark brown, curly hair and chocolate brown eyes. She has always been regarded as pretty, but her small stature makes it that people often think she is younger than her chronological age. In fact, Lucy has often been mistaken for her older sister. While close to Lucy, Mari is quite insecure about this fact and has internalized many insecurities about her looks; she is the apt to state that she is "remarkably average-looking." She is slightly above average in most all things but not exceptionally talented in her academic, sport, or artistic exploits. Mari's greatest claim to fame, in her opinion, is her sense of humor, which can be biting at times. She particularly loves reading and has recently become invested in the welfare of others. She is exceptionally protective of her youngest sister, Grace, and fears her being tainted by the evils of the world.

When Mari was four years old and playing with Lucy, a seemingly venomous (although not verified) and large spider scurried over to her younger sister and braced for attack. Mari feared for her sister's well-being and through her yelps, exhibited her first signs of magic: she made the spider disappear out of thin air. The girls, realizing Mari's action, excitedly reported the events to their father. While Ewan did not think much of the story, citing childhood fantasies, Isa, listening in the kitchen, knew she would have to explain the truth to Ewan soon. She continued to postpone the discussion until Ewan witnessed Mari clearly hover a dog to stop nipping at Lucy's heels. Ewan, unsure of what to make of this sight, asked Isa what she thought, and she told him the truth - she was a witch. Ewan was somewhat in denial and furious that Isa kept such a secret from him, resulting in one of the dark points in Mari's life - her parents' separation. As she was only four, she is still coming to terms with the magnitude of this time. Her parents reunited some years later, and Grace serves as a symbol of their reunification. Unfortunately, the compromise marking the reunification of Mari's parents was the avoidance of discussing the girls' magic; while Ewan is supportive of his children, Mari can sense conflict behind her father's eyes when discussing the wizarding world. Mari uses her humor as a coping mechanism for these conflicts.

Mari is deeply excited to embrace her wizarding side and begin independence, as though she would never admit it, she realizes her family is a great stressor on her. She is especially worried about Grace's well-being in her absence (as Lucy is not the protective type) and plans to write her notes often. She is especially excited for Charms and Care of Magical Creatures and hopes to finally acquire her own owl.

Aurelia Bezuidenhoit - Bezu - first met at the party that Mari ran away from, for fear of getting detention. Then met in the abandoned toilets, when she tried to protect Mari. Finally met at the Cabins at Blossomfest. Mari sees her as a protector and due to Veritaserum, has revealed (and received) secrets to Bezu that she has not told others at Hogwarts. Wants Bezu to teach her self-defense.


Ruka Tan - Mari doesn't know him well but her concept of a friend is so lacking that she would put him here. Helped her find a portrait that her mum had her hunt down. Mari nicely demonstrates with him her inability to interact with a boy, as well.
Lamik Fillestar - helped deliver Mari to the Hospital Wing post abandoned toilets incident
Vince Stallings - Mari so badly wants to be her friend. Did not think much of her when they met while Mari rescued Palmer from the tree, but after a potions class, Mari now thinks she's got a lot of really cool traits. She really wants to get to know Vince further.

Next, in the library, she assumed Allie was trying to be a know-it-all. Mari currently has no desire to be her friend but as she saw a glimmer of potential while she apologized in the Great Hall, Allie is merely a neutral-negative acquaintance instead of disliked.

Kaegan Deathmote - known to her as Daemon Kaegan. Stabbed her in the stomach after his toilet bomb cut her legs all up. Mari can't really call him an enemy, as she doesn't truly know him, but she is very scared of him.


Luna Choi - neutral-negative - met first at the party when she and Bezu fought verbally. Next interacted with Mari when she was outside, embracing the first parts of spring, making Mari feel awkward. Mari feels suspicious of her and generally negative because she's a Slytherin

Brief History: Isa was born in Cuba but emigrated to London at age two. She is the youngest of four children. She anxiously awaited her Hogwarts letter and would not stop talking about it after her eldest sister got her letter; her mother was thrilled when she got her letter mainly because she would stop talking about it! Although she expected to be sorted into Slytherin, as all of her siblings were, she was sorted into Ravenclaw. She does love her siblings but has some envy that they were put in Slytherin. She over-emphasizes how mean the Slytherins are (especially to Gryffindors) to try to compensate for that envy in her mind. Isa was very studious while at Hogwarts and was especially interested in Muggle Studies. Her parents never overly encouraged the studies, but they hoped that if they were lukewarm/positive on the subject, Isa would eventually find a different passion (their choice being one in the Ministry). Unfortunately for her parents, Isa never lost her interest in learning about Muggles and wanted to continue learning in adulthood. She thus chose, as she did not want to abandon the Magical world, to pursue a career as a barmaid in both the Muggle and Wizarding worlds. Isa's solution to the problem is to simply only bring up the magical world to Ewan when absolutely necessary. It has caused some tension in the family, especially because the issue still has not been discussed.
Relationship with Mari: Isa loves Mari but vastly overestimates her confidence and security (as Isa herself has much). She is of the type who centers her focus on those who are around her and gets so caught up in day-to-day life that she forgets simple actions to acknowledge others. When Mari went on the train, Isa did not realize how nervous Mari was and instead got preoccupied with the rest of the family's emotions. She is particularly bad at writing and responding to letters, which Mari greatly depends on as she adjusts to life at Hogwarts.

Brief History: Ewan was born in Surrey to a relatively normal Muggle family. His mother was a homemaker and his father was a lawyer. In his young adulthood, he had grown fond of a nightly beer with his coworkers at the local pub; it did not take long for his motivations to go to the pub to be less for the beer and more for the cute barmaid. He was only aware that Isa did not have a close relationship with her family and, respecting her feelings about the matter, never pressed the issue further. Ewan was under the impression that he was living the perfect life with his two perfect daughters until Mari made a dog hover in front of his eyes. When he reported this miracle to his wife, Isa revealed that she was a witch. To Ewan, secrets and lying is the ultimate betrayal, and the only solution for him was to abandon his wife. He returned for a few reasons: he missed his wife, he could not bear to hurt his daughters further by leaving their lives forever, and honestly, he couldn't stand failure. However, any time that Isa tried to bring up anything remotely related to magic, irritation clouded his eyes and he immediately shut down the conversation. He is trying to adjust to the idea of having magical children, but he still cannot conceal the annoyance on his face when the magical world is discussed.
Relationship with Mari: He greatly loves Mari and has a very close relationship with her. Part of this is because Mari, knowing that discussing magic bothers her father, chooses to keep her discussion of magic to a minimum. They have lighthearted, joking conversations and have begun discussion of welfare issues in the Muggle world. Most of their mail consists of lively debate on the well-being of others and Mari's relationships with her peers.

Brief History: Lucy was born ten months after Mari but has assumed her position as the younger "older" sister with ease. She has an immense amount of confidence and is always paraded by friends and followers. Lucy has commanded that her peers be kind to Mari, but unbeknownst to Mari, has become somewhat of a bully to other children at her school. That behavior has only escalated since Mari has left for Hogwarts, for Lucy does not fear word getting back to their parents anymore. Lucy is fairly absent from and unaware of what is going on in her family; thus, she will not stop talking about going to Hogwarts. She is incredibly smart and will likely be placed in Ravenclaw.
Relationship with Mari: Due to proximity in age and needing each other to cope during their parents' separation, Mari and Lucy get along; however, they have a fairly superficial relationship. Much of what they discuss are boys. When they went to the same school, Mari was mainly in Lucy's shadow. Lucy mainly communicates with Mari frequently because she wants to know what Hogwarts is like.

Brief History: Grace was born as a symbol of Isa and Ewan's reunion. While she looks like Lucy, her general demeanor is more similar to Mari, without the anxiety. She has an immense amount of confidence and will march around any public place declaring herself Princess Grace, ruler of the unicorns. (She knows they are real; the Muggles, obviously, do not. She is particularly fond of the Muggle-imagined, rainbow unicorn.) She loves to draw and write letters to her oldest sister. She is just beginning to master putting sounds together to write and read words. Grace greatly cares about others' well-beings, much like Mari. She is also beginning to show an interest in books.
Relationship with Mari: Mari feels the deepest connection with her youngest sister, but it is in more of a motherly role. Grace loves Mari but due to her age does not realize how strong the relationship is. They write often; Grace is often the reason that Isa actually gets around to writing Mari letters.
