Violet Elwood - First Year - Slytherin

Violet's father was always a bit embarrassing, the way fathers can be. He was an accountant, he made terrible puns, he cheered too loud in the applause part of her dance recitals. Her mother, though - while she was a touch mad, matter-of-factly believing every legend their native Ireland had to offer, she had a charm and grace that always drew Violet to her nonetheless. Sometimes she could be moody, and she always seemed sort of homesick. Violet had often wondered if her mother was part fairy, though she wasn't sure what that made her.

But when Violet blew out the candles on her ninth birthday the smoke turned half a dozen colors before floating in the shape of a butterfly up to the ceiling. She quickly learned the truth: Violet's mother was a witch. And now that she knew her daughter could do magic as well, she shared as much of the wizarding world as she could with her daughter before Violet's letter to Hogwarts came as she turned eleven.

Violet loves the arts, and along with the aforementioned dance class, her first trick with the smoke hinted at something of an artist's eye. She's often sketching something and has started to dabble in watercolors as well. She dearly loves magic and wants to learn as much as she can, in order to do all sorts of fantastic things.

But she's also inherited her father's solidness and a clear-eyed sense of her own self, of right and wrong. She's able to look at a situation, consider it, and do what needs to be done - and while of course she's hurt as much as anyone by failure or hurtful words, she has the patience to get back up again and push on towards whatever her goal might be.

History: Violet's father worked his way through school in the midst of all manner of Muggle problems: the edge of poverty, the tumultuous climate of Northern Ireland at the time, and two rather unkind parents of his own. Meeting Aibreann, the witch he'd later marry, felt like finding something beautiful at the end of a long dark tunnel. Aibreann was fascinated by all folklore, magical and Muggle alike, and she was as drawn to Daniel Elwood's solid kindness as he was to her playfulness and inquisitive mind. Even after they got to know each other, learned past the ideal of each other, they became true partners. They vowed to give their only daughter a happy, loving home where she'd be encouraged - witch or not.

Of course, that also meant keeping an entire world secret until they knew for sure. In Aibreann's mind, magical folk were notoriously unkind to people without their abilities, something she'd learned the hard way when her choice of partner was met with confusion and judgment. She'd thought the Wizarding World had grown past these prejudices - but then, prejudice doesn't often die, just change. So the couple resolved that their daughter wouldn't be open to the same scorn, not until she was proven to be a witch herself.

For all they were a marriage of opposites, this was the cause of most of the pair's bickering, as it grew harder to hide the nature of a world Aibreann had known all her life - and she was far more homesick than she thought she'd be. Violet often felt like there was a piece of herself missing, something that made her different from her peers and from the world around her. When she blew out her candles on her ninth birthday, when the first sign of magic emerged from her, it didn't just mean understanding that magic was real. It meant understanding that she was magic. It meant knowing she was full of the kind of potential she could never imagine. And she kept that close to her heart, every day until she could go to Hogwarts and learn more than just what her mother could show her.
