Hogwarts was turning out to be a lot bigger than Leo had expected. Sure his parents had told him a bunch of facts about the place before he arrived but it was hard to take all of them in until he was actually inside the place itself. However, this wasn't the best time to stand around marveling at the sights around him. Leo had never been the best at keeping track of time but he was pretty sure there were only fifteen minutes left until transfiguration and he had no idea where he was even going.
Normally fifteen minutes would have been plenty of time to get to the classroom but Leo had no idea where he was going and the number of doors and passages in this castle seemed to be never-ending. He thought back to the first night he arrived here when the prefects were leading everyone to the common room. Didn't they mention something about that classroom being somewhere near our common room, he thought. Oh well, better than anything else I've come up with so far, if worst comes to worst I'm a first year and kind of famous, I'll just style it out. Fashionably late and all that.
Now his only problem was finding the staircase that lead up to the fifth floor. Leo wasn't really one for solving puzzles and he hadn't had time to notice any patterns yet. He jumped on the staircase closest to him just as it suddenly began to move down towards the first floor. Oh great, now I've got to climb all the way back up these without getting shifted about to who knows where. He quickly snapped out of it and looked around him. Someone else must be heading to the same class as him right?
He moved along the corridor he'd been placed on, with a natural bounce in his step as he began to seek out another student, absentmindedly muttering under his breath. "Stupid staircases won't make up their mind, probably that creepy poltergeist trying to make me late. This class better be on the fifth floor after all this."

Nothing, absolutely nothing could have been worse than oversleeping on his first day of Transfiguration class. Ruka had planned on getting up early, grabbing some breakfast and then following some other first years to the right classroom, but he had been so tired that this morning he’d gone straight back to sleep after checking the time. Apparently that’s what a full tummy and soft bed did to you if you weren’t used to having either of them.
Ruka sighed as he ran through the hallways, slowing down whenever he heard someone closeby so he wouldn’t get into trouble for running; He’s heard it wasn’t usually approved of in schools. “Crap,” he muttered under his breath as he tried to adjust his robes while walking and keeping an eye out for the right door at the same time. So far he’d managed to find a broom closet and a room that was strangely filled with nothing but pillows. Needless to say that had only really tempted him to just lie down and go back to sleep again.
Ruka turned a corner, helplessly looking at one staircase going all the way down and another that didn’t really seem to lead anywhere except an empty patch of wall. He was already not used to being inside buildings, but he doubted anything could have prepared him for the maze that was Hogwarts.
Shaking his head, Ruka decided to take neither of the stairs since he remembered that the Transfiguration classroom wasn’t supposed to be too far from the Gryffindor common room.
He had so little time left, and all the doors he came across were either locked or actually just walls pretending to be doors.
It was hopeless.
Until Ruka heard a voice that sounded like he recognised it from the Common Room in passing. It was true; He hadn’t properly met anybody yet, let alone made any friends - He had always been happy to be there but too shy to really get involved with other kids - but Gryffindor was supposed to be his family now, and family was supposed to help each other out, right?
He curiously moved towards the voice, fumbling with the sleeves of his robe as he turned another corner.
Sure enough there was a boy he vaguely remembered seeing both in the Common Room and during the Sorting Ceremony before. “Thank God! he blurted out, slumping against the wall next to him. “I’m so lost, please tell me I’m not the only one? I need to get to Transfiguration but I keep bumping into that door down there that laughs at me everytime I try to open it?” He stared at the other boy desperately, silently begging for help. “Do you know where it is? Not the door, the classroom, I mean.”

Staircase Shenanigans
Leo spun around upon hearing the other voice, coming face to face with a boy around his age who looked as lost as he was. Finally, he wasn't stuck wandering around here alone! At least he wasn't the only one having problems finding anything in this castle. Sure it kind of sucked that this boy was lost too but two heads had to be better than one right?
"Oh no, you're not the only one, I've been wandering around these dumb stairs for about ten minutes now. I don't know how everyone else like, got the book explaining them but I sure want one." He paused for a moment when the other boy mentioned the strange door. He hadn't heard any doors laughing while he'd been looking around but if he'd learned anything today Hogwarts was a big place, who knows what kind of crazy stuff they let hang around the castle. Although he did find himself wanting to check it out after he finally found his way to class, hanging out with an ominous laughing door still beat doing any homework.
"Laughing door? Hey, you'll have to show me it later, maybe that creepy little ghost I saw earlier was possessing it or something. Either way, it sounds like it's an arse so we should go and laugh back at it, maybe that's what makes it open. Kind of like the Hufflepuff common room, I heard you have to tap on the right barrels for that door to open or a trap sprays vinegar at you. Makes me glad to be in Gryffindor though. I don't want to have to deal with my clothes being trashed or that Ravenclaw riddle thing locking me out."
Realizing at this point, that he had completely abandoned the main point of this conversation he caught himself and grinned at the other boy. The classroom was something he kind of knew about at least. "Oh I do know the answer to that one! It's somewhere on the fifth floor, near our common room. I'd probably be there right now if the stairs hadn't messed me up but at least we can help each other now. Gryffindors gotta stick together!"
He paused, looking up at the nearest staircase before speaking again. "So do you have any idea which stairs are the right ones or do you want to just jump on this set?"

Ruka sighed in relief upon finding out that this boy was just as lost as he was himself. Sure, being late would still make a bad impression, but at least he wouldn't be the only one.
"I was gonna follow everone else, but I overselpt," he explained meekly, shuffling his feet on the ground. He could feel his cheeks going red at the admission and quickly looked away, staring intensely at his shoelaces for a moment. "This place is massive, I can't believe anybody can find their way around here!"
Ruka looked back up at the other boy as he talked about going back to the laughing door, and he found himself grinning and nodding excitedly. Maybe it wasn't so bad to have gotten lost; at least he was starting to make friends around here, and God knows he was going to need some in a place like this. "Maybe it wasn't even a door," he mused, biting his lower lip to suppress a smile. Maybe it was just a part of the wall trying to pull a prank on me. After everything I've already seen this morning, that wouldn't even surprise me!" He laughed, eyes sparking gleefully as he approached the boy some more, feeling less shy by the second. This boy seemed to know quite a bit about the castle and how things worked around here, which made him think that he probably came from a magical family and had already grown up hearing stories about Hogwarts. It almost made him a little bit jealous; it must have been amazing to grow up around all sorts of magic! It sprays vinegar at you?" he asked, laughing loudly at the mental image. I'd have to change clothes all the time, I'd never get to class!" His laughter died down a bit as he took a deep breath and looked around a bit as if his classroom may have magically appeared now that he'd mentioned class.
It hadn't, of course.
However, the other boy at least had an idea of where it was supposed to be, so that was something at least. "Gryffindors gotta stick together," he repeated grinning and walked towards the nearest staircase as well. "Well, I definitely know it's not the one over there," he said, skipping past the other boy and onto the first step of the staircase. "It literally leads straight into a wall," He laughed and waited for his new friend-in-the-making to follow him up the stairs before continuing. "My name's Ruka, by the way," he finally introduced himself. "I'm so happy I ran into you, it's all a bit... overwhelming. A few weeks ago I didn't even know real magic existed, and today I've got staircases moving and doors laughing at me. Always good to have someone else with you when those kinds of things happen to you, right?"
