A phone?
Colin, a book in one hand, a chair in the other, was quietly descending the big stairs of Hogwarts. Today, the weather is nice and the professor wanted to enjoy reading a book about the customs of the Spanish muggles, outside... A reading that was very interesting.
Arrived outside the castle, he scanned the place and spotted what he was looking for: a tree big enough to make him enough shade and strong enough for him to rest on it. It could enjoy the heat without having to suffer the sun's rays. He set up his chair against the trunk of the tree and began his reading.
But as soon as he had read three pages a student interrupted him:
" Sir... can I ask you a question? "
Colin sighed, he had already dealt with this boy and he knew that if he did not abbreviate his answers, he still had them for several hours.
" It's already done ... In short, how can I help you young man? "
The boy continued with his thin voice:
" Oh thank you sir, I'd like to know what a phone is for... "
As Colin had feared, it was not an easy question. He replied, trying to make it as short and simple as possible:
" The phone is the means of communication of muggles, we have owls, they have phones... "
But Colin was wrong to hope that this answer would suffice because the pupil went on:
" And how does a phone work? "
This question, Colin had not planned and he was a little bothered, not really knowing what he could say to the student.
" It's complicated, you know... The phones have a kind of wire with waves inside and ... Well, you understand, come on, go play with your classmates now. "
He sat back down to his reading when another voice interrupted him...

A phone?
One thing Ben struggled with ever since arriving at Hogwarts was communication with home. His muggle parents were pretty opposed to most of Wizard culture that they've seen and would not appreciate a message delivered by owl. It had been quite a while now and Ben had not contacted his family at all so far. Hogwarts was like living in a medieval times it seemed. Technology was lacking where magic was preferred. While doing a leisurely walk of the grounds he overheard a conversation between a professor and a student.
A phone? That's a new thing to them? Wow they know as little about muggle life as I do about Wizards... or worse!
A big grin appeared on the Ravenclaw Prefect's face as he decided to add his two cents after the other student was sent away. The teacher did not seem happy to be bothered by the other student, but he did seem to be knowledgeable in muggle items. Maybe there would be an iPhone in his pocket Ben could borrow...
"Sir?" he started slowly, already feeling awkward for interrupting. "I couldn't help but overhear you talking about phones... do you happen to have one? Are there any phones here?"
My mum is going to murder me if I don't contact them soon.

A phone?
The fresh air was what Bloom needed after being coddled in the castle for a few days. She needed to relax and take some time for her. Thinking of all the places she could go, she decided to just go to the grounds where there was a courtyard. There were many trees for Bloom to relax against and just take in the sunny weather.
Just carrying her wand and wearing her Ravenclaw Prefect uniform, Bloom made her way towards the courtyard by exiting the first floor corridor. Starting from the right hand side, Bloom looked from tree to tree, and she saw that each one was taken. Great, she thought to herself. She then looked all the way to the left side to find see Ben standing there with what looks like a professor.
Bloom walked over to Ben with a smile on her face. She was extremely happy to see him, especially in the day time. Lately, they were only really able to see each other at night. Knowing that there was a professor present, Bloom held off on holding hands with Ben. She looked at the professor and saw that he was reading a book quietly, having some alone time. Why is Ben bothering the professor? she asked herself.
"Good afternoon professor... Ben," she smiled bigger than before. She overheard Ben talk about a need for a phone for a second and Bloom tried to remember what those were. Phone... Phone..., she then had an idea of what they were, but she decided to not say anything. The last thing she needs was to look like she did not know anything in front of Ben and the Muggle Studies professor.
"Ben, if you need to contact your family, I know which owl is the fastest," she offered just in case the professor did not have a phone for him to use.

A phone?
" Sir? "
Colin looked up annoyed but the pupil in front of him looked so embarrassed that he could not help but smile.
" I couldn't help but overhear you talking about phones... do you happen to have one? Are there any phones here? "
Phones at Hogwarts? Colin could not help but think that the student was not very cultivated for a Ravenclaw. Anyone who knew the story of Hogwarts knew that electronic objects did not work at Hogwarts. He tried to answer the one he identified as the Ravenclaw prefect when a voice, this time from a girl, exclaimed:
" Good afternoon professor... Ben. "
The girl who spoke had with a big smile. She thought for a moment, while Colin was trying to remember his identity... Finally, he remembered that she was the Ravenclaw prefect. He had in front of him, the two prefects of the house Ravenclaw. The girl spoke again:
" Ben, if you need to contact your family, I know which owl is the fastest. "
After listening to the girl speak, Colin spoke:
" Your friend is right young man, owls are the means of communication used at Hogwarts ... And, if you had read the story of Hogwarts, you would certainly know that electronic devices do not work here. "
But Colin was not stupid and he guessed that if the student asked for a phone, it was because he did not want or could not use owls.
" Why do you need a phone, young man? "
He still hoped that the two students would not encroach too much on his time, he wanted to have finished his book before the end of the week...

A phone?
Ben blushed slightly at being called out, by Bloom of all people, about his phone question. He had not learned much yet and there was a long way to go still. No enchanted phones or otherwise would likely exist at Hogwarts. Unfortunate for Ben and his parents who wanted to hear from him. A sigh escaped before he responded.
"My parents are freaked out by owl letters," he said quietly, trying not to look directly at Bloom. "They're muggles, one hundred percent, and a phone call would work better... or an email?"
He laughed a bit awkwardly before finally glancing to Bloom. She was a great friend, a great girlfriend, and he was thankful for her attempt to help. His mum would kill him if he sent an owl but she would also kill him if he never wrote. Lose lose situation on hand for Ben here. After explaining his question to Professor Anderson he shook his head slowly.
"Sorry if it is a dumb question, Professor," he said, feeling like he was dumb. "Parents, you know?"
He better not be an orphan...
Ben almost reached to hold Bloom's hand but realized it might be weird in front of the adult. He instead stopped and simply gave her another smile. His response to her had been fairly indirect so he turned to her quickly before he could get a response.
"Thanks for the offer though, might still take it!"

A phone?
Her heartbeat was racing. She could feel the sense of urgency that was coming from Ben. It seemed that he hadn't contacted his parents in awhile since they got to Hogwarts. Will he tell them about me? she wondered, her eye catching the view of the green grass on the ground. She then looked up and at the professor.
Perhaps they were bothering the professor as he wanted to keep reading his book and kept trying to shut the conversation down. Being a bit too young and naive, Bloom was unable to gather the context clues of the professor wanting to be alone. She stayed there in the Professors way along with Ben.
"An email? Is that the owl that happens with a click of a button?" she asked, wondering if it was the click-type of mail. She remembered going with her older sister to a public library where she saw these boxes of technology in a single orderly fashioned line. She noticed that people were not only conversing with each other but they were sending mail to each other as well. She did not know it was called email. Why don't we have that? she thought, wondering why they were stuck in the middle ages here in Hogwarts.
Bloom waited patiently, hoping that Ben would be able to reach out to his parents somehow with the professor's help as owls did not seem like the best option.
