Under the surface, Tremaine knew, there was something remarkable. The surface was calm, rippling with the breeze, but underneath was a monster.
Tremaine had seen pictures of the giant squid, but he hadn't ever seen the real thing. Days and days of waiting for a glimpse had proven unsuccessful. Perhaps it was too cold for the quid to come out. Well, if Tremaine had to wait until the very end of the school year to see this squid, so be it. He was a lover of monsters and magical creatures, and, to be honest, very few of those sorts of things lurked in the cities of England. He knew because he had looked for them, though he hadn't been allowed to wander very much. His mother was a strict woman, and though she tolerated Tremaine's monster obsession, she didn't want him running around after dark looking for them. Fortunately, the Hogwarts teachers didn't seem to feel the same.
Sitting by the edge of the water in his winter cloak, Tremaine watched the water. He had been here for quite some time, as still as a statue, quiet as a mouse, waiting to see a tentacle or shadowy shape. No such luck. It was getting rather late now, and students were starting to go back in. Tremaine didn't move a muscle. He was still waiting, and though he would hate to miss dinner, he'd much rather see a giant squid.
Pulling his cloak around himself more tightly, Tremaine turned to watch a gaggle of students walk towards the castle, laughing and chatting. He almost wished he could be with them, but nothing could get in the way of his obsessions, not even loneliness. He wished now that he had asked one of his friends to come with him - not that they would want to. It was freezing out here, and though some of them were interested in giant squids, they had other obligations, such as homework.

Cheryl had been outside near the lake drawing any little creature that scurried by. She loved being outside, even though most days had been rather cold. She looked up from her sketchbook and noticed that it was getting late and the other students had all started to head inside. She decided that she should head inside as well since it was getting late and colder by the minute. She got up and started to head inside with everyone else when someone had bumped her arm and caused her to drop her sketchbook. She stopped and crouched down to try to find it. She finally found it after the majority of the students were gone. She stood back up and looked back at the lake one last time before she went inside. As she looked out at the lake, she saw someone still sitting by the lake. The person didn't seem like they wanted to go inside at all, even though it was late and cold. She was curious and wanted to find out why the person hadn't gotten up yet.

The girl with long curly brown hair and blue-gray eyes walked down to the lake. This girl of average height and fair skin was always curious and looking for some fun. Although she was quiet the majority of the time, she had a wild and mischievous side to her that most people didn't see. She loved drawing and making music of her own. She loved nature and playing any type of game. She was ambitious yet quiet and calm around most people. To everyone, she was a shy normal girl, but hardly anyone knew the real Cheryl.

She walked toward the person and saw that it was a boy sitting at the edge and looking into the lake as if he was waiting for something to happen. She got closer and decided to sit down next to him. She pulled her knees to her chest and looked at the boy. She looked into the lake but saw nothing, then looked back at the boy. She held out her hand to the boy and said "Hi there, my name is Cheryl. Cheryl Gorham. Sorry to bother you but I was wondering two things. How come you are still out here all alone when it is late and freezing and why are you looking so hard at the lake?" She hoped that she hadn't come off as rude or anything to the boy. She was only trying to be as nice and friendly as possible to the boy.

Tremaine's mind began to wander, thinking of all the things he hadn't done or seen yet that he would - soon. One of them, of course, was catching a glimpse of the giant squid. If he owned a camera, he would have brought it along to keep the moment suspended in time. But he didn't own a camera, and he certainly couldn't afford one, so anyone he told about his experience would just have to take his word for it. He couldn't understand why he hadn't seen it before - he had been told that it just came up whenever it pleased. Maybe it knew he was watching, and it didn't want to come up.

Straying from his giant squid thoughts, Tremaine gave the Forbidden Forest a quick scan. How he wished he could go in there. Sure, it was pretty dangerous, but imagine what he might see in there! Centaurs, unicorns, giant spiders, anything he had ever wanted to see up close. The only thing he couldn't imagine being in there was a dragon. He himself planned on owning a dragon one day. Probably an Antipodean Opaleye. They were beautiful creatures, and Tremaine could just imagine himself riding one through the sky, twisting and turning.

He was jolted out of his daydream-induced stupor by the sound of a girl's voice next to him. He jumped and looked around, trying to figure out who was talking. Next to him sat a young girl with waves of chocolate-brown hair and blue-grey eyes, rather similar to his own. She sat with her knees to her chest, and Tremaine wondered how long she had been sitting there.

"Sorry, you surprised me," Tremaine said, purposefully avoiding the word "scare". She hadn't scared him. He didn't get scared. As if to prove this, to himself and to her, he rubbed some invisible particles of dust off of his Gryffindor badge. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Miss Gorham." He gave himself a moment to contemplate her answers.

"I'm out her alone for the same reason that I'm staring at the lake," he finally answered. "I'm hoping to catch a glimpse of the monster that lives in this like. Have you heard of the giant squid? He lives in this lake, and I've been waiting for him to surface."

So the boy was out here looking for the giant squid. Cheryl had heard of it but wasn't too interested in it since she thought they were all rumors. " I have heard of the giant squid but I was never too interested in it. It seems like you are very captivated by it since you are still out here looking for it." Cheryl drew her knees in tighter and shivered a little. She was cold but fairly interested in the boy's fascination with this particular creature. She thought to herself that if they did see the squid, she could draw it. She scooted closer to the boy in hope for a little more warmth. He seemed nice and like a potential friend. "Do you mind if I stay out here with you looking for this giant squid." She stared at the lake and at the boy wondering if they would actually see it. She looked around and saw nobody else outside but the two of them. She wanted to be in the warmth of indoors but wanted to stay with the boy. " I assume you like creatures. I like to draw cute little creatures and sometimes people. Do you mind if I draw you?" Cheryl pulled out her sketchbook and flipped to a new page. She looked up at the boy. "So what's you name mystery boy?" Cheryl wondered about the boy and if they would become friends. She hoped that they would.

Tremaine smiled as Cheryl told him that she had heard of the giant squid, but couldn't help furrowing his eyebrows as she mentioned that she wasn't interested. It was hard to imagine someone knowing that there was a monstrous be-tentacled monster right under their nose, and not really caring. But some people, he supposed, just weren't interested in magical creatures. Or maybe they were afraid. Well, Tremaine wasn't. That's why he was in Gryffindor.
Cheryl moved a little closed to him, obviously cold. Well, it was freezing out here. Of course, he knew what he would have to do, but he waited as she went on. She asked to stay out and look for the giant squid. So perhaps she was interested, after all. Or maybe she just wanted someone to hang out with. Either way, the more the merrier! They were the only two out here, Tremaine determined to sight this great beast and Cheryl inexplicably determined to do the same.
Turning to look at her as she spoke, Tremaine noticed that Cheryl had a sketchbook. Yes, he liked creatures. Maybe she would want to draw the giant squid. That might be why she was out here. Although the giant quid was certainly not cute. And now she wanted to draw him. There were so many artists here at Hogwarts - and every single one so far had been a girl. It was rather odd, Tremaine thought. But if she wanted to draw him, who was he to deny her?
Before he responded, though, Cheryl asked him one more question. His name. Taking a deep breath, he answered her questions one by one.
"I have no idea when this giant squid is going to come out, but feel free to sit here and wait with me. And you can certainly draw me if you want. My name is Jarrow, Tremaine Jarrow." He knew that some pureblood families had heard of the Jarrows. His grandmother had been an Auror, and his mother worked in Misuse of Muggle Artifacts. They had rather fallen out of favor since the reign of Voldemort, though, and not many families knew of them.
Seeing Cheryl gave a little shiver, Tremaine stood and took of his winter cloak, offering it up to her. "Here, Miss Gorham. Another layer never hurts."

Cheryl grinned when Tremaine offered her his cloak. She took it and put it on and started to sketch him. She looked up at him and then back down at the sketchbook. "Thank you for the cloak, it's very warm. Don't you need it though? It's freezing out here." She was pleased to know that she could stay out here with him. She was slowly developing an interest in the giant squid. Maybe it was just seeing Tremaine have such a great interest in it made her feel like there was more to this creature that what she had heard about. The thought of such a giant thing scared her only a bit. She wondered if Tremaine was scared of it or not, although it seemed like he wasn't. Cheryl wasn't scared of many things but she was scared of things that were way bigger than her. "To be honest, I really wasn't interested in the squid because it scared me a little bit. Does it not scare you the slightest? I mean that thing has to be huge right." Cheryl's eyes got bigger when she said the last sentence. She looked at Tremaine and then continued drawing. She thought about how long they would stay out here. What if the giant squid never showed up and they were out here just looking for something that they would never see. Cheryl took a deep breath and calmed herself. There was nothing to worry about. They were going to see that giant squid no matter what. Cheryl found herself determined to see this thing now. She wondered what had fueled this drive that was now inside her.
