The rehearsal room was one of the few places at Hogwarts that Vivienne Thorne found herself returning to without a particular reason to justify it. She'd long ago deemed the piano as one of those skills—taught with expectation and learnt with resentment. After her professional course for the instrument ended a few months prior to her joining the wizarding school, she decided to never touch the keys again for good. Well, that was until a few days into the school year. She had come across the Rehearsal room, and everything inside had just fueled her growing amazement. She still remembered when she'd performed here, by herself, for the first time. The walls had listened and the paintings had applauded, with no father in sight who looked at her like playing well was the bare minimum.
Ever since then, Vivienne had been coming here in her spare time, playing an instrument she thought she hated.
Today was one of those days. Classes had been tiring, to say the least. Although she enjoyed learning because she did not know how to despise it, but it grew tedious sometimes. Additionally, her thoughts had been quite muddled the whole day. Home felt too much to keep up with, all while being away from it. Their owls confused & enraged her at the same time. Her parents' decisions about her brother's future were questionable, to say the least.
What better place to gather her scattered thoughts than the one place that had never asked anything of her? The rehearsal room was quiet when Vivienne entered, save for the faint rustling of the curtains stirred by the breeze. And here it was, completely empty, just as she'd hoped. Vivi crossed the room with unhurried steps, approaching the piano that she'd recently learnt to appreciate as more than just an obligation. And so the girl sat down, took a deep breath, and let her fingers naturally find their way along the black and white keys. The first few notes were tentative, almost absent-minded, as though she were testing whether the instrument would indulge her mood. Gradually, however, the melody began to take shape. She played passages she'd not actively thought about in months. It was a classical piece, perhaps one of the first few she'd learnt as a child.
The thoughts that had weighed on her all afternoon gradually receded, and for the first time that day, Vivienne let herself forget about everything else and simply enjoy the quiet comfort of her own company.
