The Stain Preptober 2026

Prompt: Something very very pink.

The Elevator Pitch
> In a paragraph: A family with strained relations starts a Monday by realising their front door has been replaced by a mysterious, bright pink stain on the wall. Confusion and panic ensues, up until one of them realises that when they wish for something, it appears through the pink stain, into their house...
> In a sentence: A pink stain appears on the wall of a family's house, whom struggle to make sense of it.

Three things I know:
- It's about being careful what you wish for, and self reflecting on what is important.
- The food they try to wish for ends up being pink goo that is either inedible, or tasteless.
- Regardless of the ending, the origins of the 'Stain' must remain a mystery or perhaps a metaphor.
Three things I haven't figured out yet:
- The family's strained relations, how the story will expound upon them, and perhaps how to mend them.
- Whether or not to add more creepy elements, more light-hearted elements, or a balance of such in the story.
- What kind of ending I want, and how to bring it about.

The Promise: "I want this story to make the reader feel drawn in with curiosity, perhaps a little creeped out at times, but ultimately pensive or reflective.."

While the mystery of the Stain itself could be somewhat explored, the idea is to initially think about what one would wish for in their stead, and why. To share in the initial jubilation that one could have anything they want, only to realise too late when the house is full of objects one no longer uses or cares for. Or are perhaps entirely made out of pink goo. That every wish they make only makes them eventually question why they wanted it, in the first place. Not to mention the eerie complications of certain, more complex wishes that the Stain may try to complete in eerie ways. Though perhaps that might start leaning too much into the horror side of things, so it might have to remain somewhat grounded in that respect.
