Beneath the Surface of Love
Date: 14th of July
That afternoon, the feeling from the meeting with Salim still clung tightly to Olivia. She had gone up to her room and a few minutes later heard her father coming home from the ministry, she supposed. It was good because she knew she needed to do it today, when the feeling was still in her. She would confront him.
She looked at the photograph of her and Salim, now leaning against her bedside lamp on the bedside table. She thought about what he had said to her when they had met yesterday. That she was strong and that she was special. Usually Olivia had just brushed it off as nonsense, but with Salim it was different. She wanted to believe him.
Olivia took a breath and went downstairs where she found him in the living room with today's edition of the Daily Prophet. She didn't read the headline until her father spotted her and put the newspaper down.
"Good afternoon, daughter," he said, but his voice sounded almost a little strained. He probably hadn't forgotten their conversation a couple of days ago.
“Good afternoon, Father,” Olivia said, settling into the armchair. She took a breath, it was time. “Father,” she began firmly. “I want to talk to you about something important and I want to get it over with before either of us leave this room.”
She watched her father’s expression shift as he sat up straighter. “What is it?” he asked, and now there was no warmth in his voice.
Olivia hesitated, but she knew she had to do it.
“I wanted to ask you about your past,” she said firmly. “You’ve never said anything about your family or your childhood. Why?” she asked, and before he could answer, she added, “The truth.”
Marc sighed and ran a hand over his face. “It’s complicated,” he muttered, not meeting her gaze.
“Then explain,” Olivia pressed, her voice cold as ice. “We have time.”
He took a deep breath. “I don’t want to talk about it.”
She wasn’t going to give up. “But I want to, and it actually concerns me too.”
“Fine,” Marc snorted, finally meeting her gaze. “My family practically threw me out when I married your mother. Happy now?!”
There was complete silence for a moment.

Beneath the Surface of Love
Until Olivia broke it. “No,” she said simply, the calmness in her voice a stark contrast to the tone her father had when he answered.
“Okay, so you want the whole story?!” he said, his eyes wildly wide.
“Yes,” she said just as simply and calmly.
“Sure, then you’ll get it,” he said, and now he was really upset. “On my side, you’re related to a long line of highly respected pure-blood wizards and witches who are obsessed with blood status. Your mother was Muggle-born and when we married, my family saw it as a fraud and excluded me from the family. But that didn’t matter because I had your mother. Then she died and all I had was you.”
This time there was longer silence. Olivia looked at her father with a hatred in her eyes that had never been there before.
“And all you had was me,” she repeated, now her voice shaking a little with suppressed anger.
“Yes!” Marc exclaimed, not seeming to have understood his daughter's tone. "You don't understand what I've been through!-"
Olivia interrupted him, but now her voice was no longer controlled. "You don't understand what I'm going through!" she roared, and she had stood up. "You don't understand what it's been like for me my whole life! Not feeling loved or appreciated or even cared about! To be ALL ALONE!"
Marc opened his mouth, closed it, opened it again, and then closed it one last time.
But Olivia wasn't going to let him talk. She didn't want to hear what he might say next.
"Don't follow me," she said simply, then left the room.
She hurried up to her room and pulled a backpack from under the bed, which she began to stuff into. She needed to get away from there, and not just from the room, but from the house, from London.
When she was done, she closed it and ran back down the stairs and out into the hall. There she put her feet in her shoes and left the house.
The door slammed behind her and she stood in the street, waiting in case her father would come after her. But he didn't come. So she hoisted her backpack higher on her shoulder and started walking.
