Bella was just casually walking around Hogwarts one September afternoon, bored and slightly restless. She didn't have homework, as it was only the first week of school, and she had no idea where everybody went after classes.
She looked around, lost for a second, before she realized that she wandered into the Viaduct. She peered over the bridge-like structure, letting the wind blow in her hair, and smiled at the beauty of it all -- before looking down.
Bella stumbled for a second and walked two steps back from the ledge.
"Oh...I was so not ready for that. Why is this so high up?" she asked herself. It might be an irrational fear for some, but out of all things she could have possibly be scared of, Bella was extremely, absolutely scared of heights.
It might have come from multiple times when she almost fell of bridges due to curiosity when she was younger, or just the feeling of overthinking "what if you fall to your doom?" But Bella was working on that problem.
Nervously, she stepped close to the edge again and looked down, taking deep breaths to stablize herself. That was when she heard it.
The tap, tap, tap of shoes made Bella look up, and there she saw a girl walking on the ledge, looking fearless.
"Oof. Wow. That's brave. I probably wouldn't be able to do that without freaking out," Bella muttered to herself. She knew it was okay, that she had her own strengths and weaknesses, but she wished she wouldn't freak out at the sight of tall heights instantly.
Upon a closer look, Bella realized she knew the girl who was on the ledge. In fact, they were friends!
"Wait...Xio? Oh, hiii! Isn't this all so beautiful?" Bella exclaimed, rushing over to her friend.

Bella watched as Xio crouched down on the ledge and gave her a wide, cheerful smile.
"I was just wandering around the castle, since I feel like every time I explore, I find something new! Like today, I found out that the Viaduct is really really high up but also really pretty. And also, I heard that this place has a lot of history so I wanted to see if there might be any secrets hidden here. Or mysteries! But then, I found you!" Bella exclaimed, shooting a look at the wall. Xio noticed and made a comment about how the wall isn't going to hurt her, but Bella couldn't help but give the wall -- and ledge -- a second glance.
"Yep. You recalled correctly. Heights are-- " Bella shuddered,"Ughh. Though I'm trying to get rid of that aversion because it's extremely inconvenient in times like these."
Then, Xio gave Bella a thoughtful and knowing smile. Bella backed away, "Oh, no. I know you well enough, Xio, to know what that smile means. You have something planned, don't you?"
Xio opened both hands to Bella, explaining that she doesn't need to come up onto the ledge but if she would like, her friend would be there to help.
"Umm..." Bella muttered. She looked down again, then shook her head.
"Sorry, Xio, I don't think ---" she sucked in a breath, looking around.
She saw one of the birds stop on the ledge nearby, looked at Bella in the eyes, then flew away. It was a very normal occurrence, as birds were everywhere, but to Bella, it felt like a sign. Even though she wasn't really superstitious (at least, she didn't think she was), the sign was more of a motivation than anything.
"Fine. I'll do it. But if I fall, I'm going to be really really...ughh. I'm just not going to think about looking down or falling. Nope, not falling! And I might as well just put my foot on the ledge, or I will consider quitting because every part of me is screaming that this is a terrible idea."
Before climbing onto the ledge, Bella shot her friend a halfway-terrified, halfway-excited look, "You know, Xio? Before I met you on that train, I would never have done something like this. You truly are something special." She shook her head, chuckling, as she reached over to boost herself onto the high ground.
OOC Notes: Lol, I was like hmm...the viaduct...what a random place! Something interesting must happen there, right? And then I found you walking on the ledge and I was like oh cool!

Bella couldn't believe that she did it. And she couldn't believe that she was actually having fun! It was so scary at first, but she trusted that her friend wouldn't drop her or slip and pull them both down and over.
She took a deep breath, relaxing as she answered Xio's questions.
"I know, right? It feels like I have been here for such a long time. It feels like we have been friends forever! I can't believe that I didn't even know who you were a week ago. So much has changed. And so many things will continue to change for the next few years..." Bella looked out, the wind blowing in her hair. She tensed up when a bird surprised her by landing right next to her but sighed and waved it goodbye as the bird flew away.
"Hey, thanks, Xio!" Bella looked at her friend gratefully. "This is really pretty, isn't it? It feels so peaceful, so nature-like...until I look down, at least. But I'm not looking down!" And then, of course, Bella peeked down then quickly snapped her head up. "It's so funny that I'm only not scared of heights when I'm on a broom. It makes me feel safe. But somehow, here, it feels so much more dangerous. Crazy, huh?"
"Anyways, before I came here and totally distracted you, what were you doing on the viaduct? Just exploring, or were you looking for something in particular?" Bella asked Xio, grinning.

Bella listened thoughtfully throughout Xio's confession. This time, it was her who squeezed Xio's hands in support and understanding.
"Hey...you know what? I've been a little homesick, too. I think most are," Bella confessed. "In a way, missing home is always a part of boarding schools, like this one. But whenever I feel sad or I miss my friends, I remember that they are also probably busy, that there are more things to discover. Like here? I'm glad that you feel that this viaduct is the next best thing."
Upon hearing about Xio's friend Enno, Bella turned to look at Xio.
"You know what? I don't remember if I told you about two of my friends yet. I have...had two best friends, Jessie and Liam. They are both muggles and my neighbors, back where I lived in London. They don't even know that I have magic. And I... I miss them so much. You know, you remind of a lot of both of them. You're energetic and funny like Jessie, but also kind and thoughtful like Liam. I don't even know what to write to them, because they kept asking why I was going to a boarding school. They don't know about my magic."
Bella looked down.
"And it is a big deal! I totally understand the feeling of wondering why you haven't gotten a letter back yet. It is fair! You are just being a caring friend, and there's not too much. It may just be that the owl needed more time to fly both ways, or like you said, he's busy. We shouldn't forget or lose our friends from our old lives, but we should also make new friends, too. That's what I'm trying to tell myself right now. I'm really lucky to be your friend. I'm glad to have you."
Bella reached over and gave Xio a hug and a squeeze.
"If you ever have any worries or anything that you want to say, just find me. I'm here for you, anytime." Bella smiled.
