The early morning sun sweeps across the stone archways of the Hogwarts courtyard, painting warm patches of light along the gravel paths and chasing away the crisp autumn chill. It is Sunday, September 13th, just three days before Minju’s twelveth birthday. Near the center of the lawn, the atmosphere feels remarkably clam, bathed in gentle sunlight and framed by the towering ancient architecture of the castle.
Adjusting the dark velvet bow pinned neatly in her shoulder-length, silky black hair, Minju stands beside a sturdy wooden table draped in a soft, red-colored linen cloth. Free from her heavy robes for the weekend, she wears a tailored, high-collared knit dress that falls gracefully past her knees—impeccably ironed, tasteful, and modest, carrying the unmistakable touch of her mother , Sun-he's strict sense of high-society poise. Her posture is naturally upright and dignified, refined by years of strict lessons in London. She takes a quiet, slow breath, looking down at her polished shoes. Accustomed to grand ballroom galas, stifling banquets, and rigid pure-blood etiquette dinners, this small, outdoor gathering in the open castle air feels deeply unfamiliar—yet undeniably peaceful.
"The silk ribbon on the gift table needs to face directly forward," Minju's older brother, Dohyun, remarks as he strides over, inspecting every inch of the arrangement with a sharp, critical eye. He reaches out to carefully adjust a polished wooden box containing a pristine set of silver quill accessories sent early that morning via family owl from their parents. "Even on a Sunday, and even without school robes, hosting something in the open space means we are on display. It still needs to reflect properly on the House of Jeong."
"It looks perfectly lovely, Dohyun. Please stop hovering," Seo-yeon says gently, cutting in before her brother can over-think the placement of the napkins. She steps up to the table and sets down a delicate glass vase filled with pale, freshly cut poppys right in the center of the spread. Smiling reassuringly at Minju, she reaches over to lightly smooth the shoulder of her sister's dress. "Everything is set up just right. You don't need to worry about a single detail today, Minju. Just focus on enjoying yourself."
Minju gives her sister a small, grateful nod, her guarded and normally unreadable expression softening for a fraction of a second. Though her brother's high standards always remind her of the intense pressure to remain a perfect lady, Seo-yeon’s quiet presence brings a familiar comfort.
Minju reaches into her pocket and checks her silver pocket watch. The hands point steadily toward 9 am. While her mother’s watchful eye is miles away in London, the courtyard feels like her very first step into something of her own. Turning back toward the archway entrance, she folds her hands neatly in front of her dress and waits quietly to see who might drop by to celebrate.
