Someone at the Door

It was a normal morning in the humble house in Ellesmere Port. Pyce had stayed up late, familiarizing themself with the material for the new school year. They were groggy, but otherwise awake with the sun. There was a knocking at the door, forcing Pyce to leave their room. Just as they started down the stairs, they heard the door open. Oh. Good, someone else got it. They would have been completely content to return to their room, but-
“What are you doing here?” Came the stern and familiar voice of their mother. Pyce stopped to listen. It was a shame they couldn’t see the front door from the top of the stairs.
“Don, hey. Henry called me and said the boys are in school now and-”
“And you think that gives you permission to just waltz up to my house?”
“Ah. No?” Pyce could hear their mother’s disapproving glare. “Look, if I could just-”
“No. You already know what I want first.”
“Don, don’t be unreasonable-”
“I don’t think there’s anything particularly unreasonable about my demands.” There was a long pause before either of them spoke again. “Get off my property.” The door was promptly slammed in the stranger’s face. Pyce stayed at the top of the stairs, debating on whether or not to go down and ask their mother about it. They decided against it, instead sneaking into Hecate’s room to borrow his copy of The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection, as it was the only book in their brother’s arsenal that had notes, good notes at that. Pyce would forever be unable to fully understand magic.
Book in hand, Pyce retired back to their room, a strange feeling in their gut. Whatever it was, Pyce put it aside. Summer camp, and school, would be starting soon. They could ask about the stranger another time.
