Most of the trees had already shed their leaves, and the air was getting colder as winter slowly approached. It was only wise to avoid high places such as the Owlery, where the wind reached almost freezing temperatures at this time of year. And many truly did stay in the warmer parts of the castle, yet none of it stopped Miren from visiting the owls’ shelter. Most likely for that very reason. Nobody was here. It was just her, the howling of the cruel wind, and an occasional hoot of one of the feathered residents. One could say the cold was just a part of the experience.

Like the few times before, Miren found herself a spot on the floor next to the open entrance, sitting with her back against the stone-cold wall. She didn’t plan to do anything specific in the moment. Instead, the girl leaned her head back and closed her eyes, letting herself relax in the seemingly unwelcoming conditions.

What she didn’t expect was an envelope landing in her lap, followed by an unfriendly screech. One that she recognized well. It belonged to her auntie’s owl, Hermes – a vile feathered thing. She returned the hostile look he gave her before she opened the envelope and speed-read the letter inside. As expected, all the info was utterly useless and boring. Basically, a description of her aunt’s usual day and a bunch of stupid questions about the beginning of Miren’s first year at Hogwarts. Nothing worth keeping. Without thinking, Miren released her grip on the paper, letting the howling wind take it away. Maybe she will write back later. Maybe.
