It had been bothering him since the day before when the girl who had introduced herself as Jo had commented on his mention of his mother doing work as security like her parents did. He really didn't know what his own parents did for their jobs. Or, at least, he didn't know what their job titles would have been. He figured he knew enough about what they actually did because they were training him to follow in their footsteps...but if that was the case, wouldn't they have told him exactly what he was supposed to be when he grew up?
Maybe they just did everything because they took on any sort of job that came their way. Didn't people who did that have a title for that too, though? Perhaps the next time he wrote to his parents, he could ask them because it had never really bothered him before. Not until the other kids had started asking about it.
Maybe before he had to write to them and bother them with such questions, however - since he suspected they were very busy and probably thought the subject to be trivial if they hadn't brought it up before - maybe he could ask someone else. Since Jo was the one who seemed to know so much about adult jobs from what he'd heard her saying, she seemed the most promising person to talk to about it.
And she didn't seem quite so hostile or unapproachable as some of the other kids in his cabin. At least...well...she hadn't shoved anyone like that sunglasses-wearing dark-haired guy, right? Even if...the first real thing he remembered Jo saying to him directly was meant to imply his mother had stolen his broom instead of bought it. She had a way with words, that one.
Swallowing his anxiety, the blond kid closed the book he had been looking through regarding potential positions one could take up in the Ministry and put it back on the shelf where he'd found it. Then he went through the cabin in search of its sole female resident.
"Jo?" he called, peering through open doors and peeking around tall furniture. "Are you here?"

Parental Occupations
The first day of camp had been quite the busy one for Jo. What with all the excitement of the introductions the previous day, the welcoming feast and her unsuccessful attempt at breaking into the school, she was rather knackered. Matters weren't helped by the persistently damp weather or the lack of scheduled activities to get her going. As a result, it had been a languorous sort of day so far, spent mostly lying around (on couches or in bed, depending on the mood) sifting through the books in their little makeshift library and the ones in her trunk--her new schoolbooks--which she hadn't yet tired of perusing.
When Strike found her, she was huddled up on her bed, their Charms textbook propped on her knees, as she tried to memorise both incantation and wand movement for the extinguishing charm. She didn't yet have the ability to set anything on fire to actually practice it, so she couldn't know if she was getting it quite right, and it wasn't even the the most interesting kind of charm to begin with, but she figured it was worth trying to learn it anyway. Her experience with Jeremy's incendiary rune had taught her the value of being prepared.
She wasn't exactly surprised when Strike's blond head poked into her room. Not because she had any sense of what was on Strike's mind or why he had sought her out. He'd just seemed friendlier than most of their cabinmates. That they would one day have a conversation had seemed more or less inevitable. And Jo was perfectly happy to have it. The boy was a bit of an oddity, and she was curious about him; about what his parents really did that he could afford a Firebolt, and about the reason behind his apparent running habit--a habit that seemed uniquely strange for an eleven year old.
Maybe he was a Quidditch prodigy, doing his five years of mandatory schooling before zipping off to sign with one of the league teams.
If that was the case, Jo very much wanted to know.
"Yeah," she replied, eyebrows raised at the needlessness of the question. "Why?"
