A Recipe for Sabotage
It hadn't been long since the school year in Hogwarts started, at least not long enough for Kevin to remember the names and faces of everyone in his year. One would expect the classes in a school of wizardry to be captivating for a young student, but it soon started feeling even more tedious than a public muggle school for a certain, unmanageable boy. As the subject of the class shifted to the recipe for a potion, his mind was already getting flooded by the same thoughts that appeared each time his math teacher back at home mentioned geometry.

Why do I have to learn this?
This will never be useful in real life.
I wonder how many minutes are left until this class is over.
Only once the other students in class started picking up ingredients and mixing them in cauldrons did Kevin notice how distracted he was. Not wanting to admit that he didn't listen to most of the steps, he decided to silently observe what the other students were doing and simply copy their steps.
That's when he noticed a girl on the row in front of him, a blonde Slytherin who seemed to be minding her own cauldron. She looks smart enough, right? It must turn out fine if he just copied what she was doing.
Okay, take that thingy in the jar, crush it in the mortar… That was easy enough. Wait, don't get to the next step so fast! His thoughts raced.
It seems that not listening to the instructions first was really making things hard to follow. At that point, Kevin felt a sense of annoyance and, almost, jealousy. After all, it was just a beginner-level potion, how could he fail right away while everyone else seemed to be doing just fine? There had to be a way to avoid being the only one who messed up.
With what seemed like a brilliant plan in his mind, he silently tore a page from his textbook and folded it into a paper plane. He filled the folds of the paper plane with a little sprinkle of every ingredient that was on the workstation in front of him and sent it flying towards the cauldron of the Slytherin girl, who had done nothing wrong so far to be targetted like this.
He watched the paper plane fly with excitement, hoping it would fall right into the mixture and mess up her brewing. A boyish, playful grin appeared on his face, giving away that he was holding back laughter.

The very beginning of the school year and Locket was already excited for classes. At least the ones where she would have to count, use logic, and be precise. After all that’s what she did best, after her parents were so adamant about sending her to science camps and after she volunteered at the observatory. She loved all kinds of sciences, and even though she did not yet know what they would be like in the wizarding world she was excited to find out.
Today she had potions class right after breakfast, so she made her way to the already slightly familiar dungeons. In class they would be making a potion, so she prepared her cauldron and also laid out all of the ingredients she would be needing. This was her element. As the professor told them to begin she wasted no time. She pretty much knew what she was doing, she followed the steps that the professor had explained precisely, and even though this was all very new to her, it wasn’t so different from a science experiment she would do back in her own school.
All this was until a certain thing didn’t mess her up… She really wasn’t being that annoying that day, and she even raised her hand in class to say her answer instead of saying it without raising it. She really didn’t know what she did wrong, as a paper airplane, armed with what seemed to be scraps of ingredients from the recipe, landed right in her cauldron, before she could even react. She gasped and quickly tried to take it out. She needed to use her spoon to scoop out the bits of unneeded ingredients that were now brewing in her otherwise perfect potion.
As she was doing so she angrily whipped her head around, to look for who would have committed such a heinous act. And right behind her, in the desk behind hers sat a boy who looked very guilty, and like he was about to laugh. Having an older sister she knew exactly how a person who’d just committed a prank looked.
“Hey, you!” she said loudly, with agitation dripping in her voice, as a few students around them turned to stare curiously. “Did you throw this airplane? You know that could’ve ended really badly! Weren’t you listening when the professor talked about caution?!” she fumed.
Who does he think he is? I’ll make sure to teach him that this is not right! Then, with confidence, she took a handful of dried nettles and threw them into his potion. Take this, little devil!

It must have been a lucky day for Kevin, judging by how successfully his not-so-planned-out prank had worked. Seeing how the girl, whose potion he had messed up, gasped and hurried to take the paper plane out of the cauldron was enough to make Kevin burst out laughing, as if it were a hilarious scene.

Once the Slytherin girl had turned to him and raised her voice, all he did was listen with a smug smirk on his face, his arms crossed. Look at how easy it is to tease someone in this school. Maybe Hogwarts won't be so boring after all! he thought to himself. He could feel the other students staring, and being perceived as a troublemaker gave him a sense of pride.
Just as he was about to open his mouth to utter some witty, annoying comeback, the blonde girl threw some green stuff into his cauldron that looked like some kind of herb he didn't know about. This unexpected retaliation wiped the smirk off his face. He raised an eyebrow and lowered his gaze to give his cauldron a blank stare for a second, only to turn his attention back to her.
"Good, now I have an explanation for why mine didn't work."
he said in a dry tone and rolled his eyes in an attempt to act nonchalant, mostly to avoid looking like he cared, even though he knew very well that he was not going to brew the potion correctly in the first place.
"Don't act like you were inventing a cure for dragon pox. It's not that serious," he added, just to further annoy the girl who was already (and rightfully so) agitated. He looked away from her and mumbled under his breath, "...nerd" a label he threw at anyone who showed even the slightest interest in school.

The smug smirk on the boy’s face fuelled her annoyment and made her throw of dried nettles into his cauldron more agitated. Seeing her action wipe that smirk off his face made her dwell in her success, with a smug satisfaction. She’d dealt with boys like him in her muggle school, and they always seemed to be the worst ones in class, so she had no mercy on him. But just as his words: “Good, now I have an explanation for why mine didn't work,” reached her ears, her smugness, alike to his, was erased from her face.
“It wasn’t gonna work either way. You’re not gonna get through this class with luck,” she sneered back. For her it wasn’t even worth it trying to look nonchalant, because her face had a mind of its own, and every single agitated expression she made at the boy was as apparent as black ink on white paper.
His next remark, specifically his phrase: “it’s not that serious” annoyed her even more. On some unconscious level of her mind, she agreed with him, but right now, when she knew that her parents had great expectations for her, and that they didn’t like this whole “witch thing” already, so she knew she had to make them proud. The boy’s statement just made her first impression of him worse. Of course it's that serious! she thought.
“Maybe I will in the future, you have no idea who you’re talking to! Maybe I’ll become a great potioneer. Besides, just because you don’t think it’s that serious, doesn’t mean the rest of us can laze through these classes without a thought in our minds!” she said, and was ready to end the conversation. He’d already taken enough time out of her lesson, and she wasn’t going to let such a smug little jerk ruin her day.
But then she heard that he mumbled something under his breath. “Nerd,” the boy said and she just couldn’t stop herself from turning back around at him. Her mind raced with all the things she could do to finally ruin that nonchalant exterior of his, since even throwing excess ingredients into his potion didn’t seem to work! He clearly cared about his reputation more than some potion, so she decided that was the best way to get back at him.
“You think you’re so cool? Well, newsflash, you just look stupid! I’m a nerd, so what? At least I’m not some idiot, who clearly doesn’t get enough attention as it is, so he decides to annoy a hard working student!” she scrunched her nose as she talked to him, as if looking at him was excruciating in itself.

Kevin was caught off guard by how much bigger the girl's reactions were getting, and by how personal they felt. For a moment, he instinctively looked from side to side to check if anyone else in the classroom was watching their argument. That's when he decided not to cause an even bigger scene. He could have easily kept pestering and annoying her, but settled for the next best thing. Was it to give a proper apology and leave her alone? Of course not.

Project, downplay, deny and gaslight. If he couldn't win the argument, the least he could do was to make it look like she was completely overreacting, as if he wasn't the one who had picked on her in the first place, and completely unprovoked at that. But how could a little harmless prank possibly be worth making such a huge fuss over, right?
"You're doing too much," he said in the dismissive tone that was characteristic of many spoiled kids their age. "You have no business calling anyone an idiot with that look on your face." His response might have sounded cool, if it weren't for the little, grumpy frown that was clearly starting to form on his face as well. "Anyone could pass these first-year classes without even trying." he added confidently, sounding completely clueless about how difficult the subjects could possibly get.
Great, now he was no longer having fun. Whatever amusement he'd gotten out of that silly little prank had quickly faded, all thanks to that girl's know-it-all attitude. He walked away from his designated spot and took a couple of steps toward to her. Not that it meant anything, other than an empty attempt to look tough, though he looked as intimidating as a puppy trying to growl for the first time. "You don't even know who I am, to be saying all that." he said, maintaining firm eye contact while still keeping a safe, respectful distance.
