It was raining. No, raining wasn't the right word for the bucket sized drops now pounding down to earth from steely dark clouds. It was so heavy one might mistake it for a waterfall. The less than ideal weather however, didn't make a difference. Ada needed to think. She needed to be somewhere were no one would bother her, and at the moment, out side in a mid summer thunderstorm seemed the perfect place to sit and think through these new, strange, and slightly terrifying thoughts that were running through her head.
...
On second thought, a nice cozy cup of coco by the fire was also quite appealing. Ada had never been more wet ever, but she didn't feel in any mood to turn back. She was bear foot as she walked across the muddy grass to the family broom shed. It was an old rickety thing built of pine wood planks, still smelling slightly Maine.
Her parent's would probably forbid her to fly in weather like this, but Ada didn't care. She had never listened those kind's of rules, and besides, she was still alive, and her parents weren't here to tell her otherwise, and she didn't want to go to all the trouble of contacting them when she knew what their answer would be.
The Shed door creaked open and the sound of the rain was muffled slightly as Ada stuck her head in, to find her broom amidst all the junk. She had to move quite a few things before finding it, tucked away in a corner, collecting dust. It was good to see it again. She looked at it for a moment. It was a good broom, rather old, but in perfect condition, it flew well and had never failed Ada in all her time of using it.
She looked up at the iron grey sky, rain pelting her face, before mounting her Nimbus 1700 and kicking off, with a squelch.
...
It was good to be back in the air, even if the weather wasn't good for flying. Wind and rain whipped her face as she sped off around the property. It was a glorious feeling, flying was. Like you had no limitations, no barriers... Like you could go anywhere, or anyone...
Ada slowed, flying high above the old stone bridge, the river beneath roaring as it flooded it's banks. There was something soothing about watching the chaos below, the rain hitting rushing water like the steady rhythmic "Chhhhhhh..." of white-noise. It cleared her head, and gave her room to think.
The questions she had been suppressing came suddenly bubbling to the surface like those jellyfish shaped air bubbles you see when you blow bubbles on your back while under water. The biggest of witch was "Who am I?" Well, I can answer that, she thought. I'm Ada. Ada Hawkins. "Really?" said another voice in her head. "Is that who you are, or is it who other people say you are?"
"I... I don't know..." She said, aloud to the storm. There was a rumble of thunder overhead, followed by a fork of lightning, illuminating the horizon for a brief moment, then slowly the rain became less heavy, until it was no more than mist hanging like a cloud over Eltham. The grey-white clouds parted and a dazzling ray of sunshine hit the earth, making everything the rain touched sparkle and shine. Ada was drenched and shivering slightly as she touched down on the rain sodden ground. At last it seamed, she knew who she was... or were to start learning at least...
As she walked back to the broom shed, she went over everything in her mind. No that's not right any more. They went over everything in their mind. Ada had come to the conclusion that they were not in fact a girl. They were just, them...
