Quentin had signed up for the Department of Mysteries. The camp was government themed. The French boy did wonder why the British government had a “Department of Mysteries.” He was certain the French government did not have one of those—but it’s not like he had ever checked. He’d rather most of the government remain a mystery to him.
It seemed the British did not feel similar, and they had an entire supply chain of bureaucracy to solve their mysteries (or maybe they manufactured them?). Quentin decided to choose this department because either of those options seemed like fun. He hoped there wouldn’t be a lot of paperwork involved.
When he arrived at the cabin, he realized he was the first student to set in their assigned cabin. The list of names on the door wasn’t that familiar to him, though there were some fellow Beauxbatons, which could be a disaster or a party. He wondered where his girlfriend @Linda Ramirez was stationed. She was going to summer camp, right? To see him play Quidditch? He paused at the threshold of the cabin, realizing that they had never discussed summer camp. Their letters to each other included so much detail—how could they have forgotten that of all things?
Well, no matter, he carried his bag and his shiny Oakshaft (borrowed from his teammate @Aryaan Shamsi to kick some Durmstrang arse this summer) through the door and examined the room.
The cabin was ocean-themed. One could say tacky and Caribbean-ish. It was like they were on the inside of a cruise ship. The windows were small portholes with waves lapping across the glass; occasionally, if one looked closely, a large creature could be seen in the distance—it would dive beneath the water if you stared too long. A banner across the common area explained that this was the TerrorTours cruise through the Bermuda Triangle.
Quentin knew enough about muggle culture to spot the mystery: Boats were always disappearing in the sea near the Triangle. But he also knew enough about wizarding culture to know the cause: some giant sea monster. Wizards hadn’t been able to remove the thing or tame it, but there were a few adventure cruises to see it.
Each room branched off the common area along a slim hallway. Once in a while, the cabin would rock, in sync with the waves hitting the portholes. The rooms had one bunk bed each. They were all identical, so it was really a matter of who you’d be sharing the room with rather than the room itself.
The center of the cabin was far cozier: Big sofas and armchairs; books galore; star charts and instruments to observe the night sky—especially the types needed if one were seafaring; candles and quiet corners and writing utensils. It felt like two themes were smashed together, honestly.
Quentin plopped down on a fluffy sofa, awaiting his cabinmates and enjoying the rocking of the cabin. He hoped none of them were prone to seasickness.
