New Beginnings

Standing a few steps from the edge of the platform, Patrick could only stare at the open door of the train in front of him. For the past eleven years, he had lived a fairly ordinary life in Cork. No magic. No owls swooping through the letterbox with mysterious envelopes. The closest thing to magic he had ever known was the sound of music.

Now, he was stepping into a world where everything he had once believed belonged only in songs and stories was real.

It was almost as though the music he had listened to all his life had suddenly come to life around him.

His parents, Donal and Aoife, stood beside him, watching as their normally calm and collected son nervously shifted from one foot to the other. Whether it was on the sports field or performing on stage, Patrick had always been known as the composed one of the boys. But this was different. They knew how overwhelming it must have been to stand on a platform and prepare to leave everything familiar behind for a world like Hogwarts.

“You’ll be fine, lad. We both know you’ll do us proud,” his father encouraged, reaching over to ruffle his hair. “Watch the hair!” Patrick laughed, turning towards them with a small smile. “I’ll do my best, alright? It’s not like anyone in our family has done this before.”

“Well, if all else fails, there’s always the band to fall back on,” Aoife replied, sticking her tongue out playfully.

Patrick laughed, but the sound quickly faded when the whistle of the train echoed across the platform.

Both parents pulled him into one final hug.

“Now, get on before we both change our minds and try to keep you off that train,” Aoife said, giving him a gentle nudge towards the carriage. Patrick climbed the steps, then turned back to wave at them both.

“I’ll keep in touch! Just keep an eye out for an owl!” With one last smile, he disappeared into the train.

Donal and Aoife remained where they were, watching him emotionally through the open doorway. For a moment, it seemed as though Patrick might turn around and say something else. He even paused, as if the words were on the tip of his tongue.

But in the end, he stopped himself. Instead, he turned and walked down the corridor in search of an empty compartment.

This was going to be the hardest thing he had ever done.

But there was no harm in trying his best, right?
