“You are no longer a Tavis.” - Quinn Tavis

Aelis heart hammered in her chest, her anxiety overwhelming. It’s just a family letter, isn’t it? It’s not like she’s in Slytherin when she was supposed to be in Ravenclaw. Absolutely not. She groans and burry her face in her hands. This day is going to be shit and she knows it. She enters the owlery, several other people she doesn’t know and doesn’t care to do are also there.
She search for her family owl, searching an owl in a little place surrounded by owl. A very easy task. She feels something big land on her head, “There he is.” she thinks. She taught Tairn, her family owl she named after a dragon in one of her favorite book because of how grumpy he is, to land on her head when he has a new letter. She had 9 years old when she started teaching him, finally, the little trick is pretty useful. Tairn drops the letter in her hand and fly away without a second thought. “Grumpy old man” she thinks with a small laugh. She looks at the letter for a minute, taking a big breath before opening it.
Aelis breath caught in her throat, she felt the tears welling in her eyes. Of course, what did she expect? She’s a disappointment, a mistake. Mistake, mistake, MISTAKE. All the others in the room are forgotten as she sit against the wall and let out a small sob, tears falling on the paper.Dear Aelis,
We are horribly disappointed in you. We laid all our hopes upon you and your chance to land in Ravenclaw. It is now we learn you are in Slytherin? Your grandmother almost fainted when she heard about this. You can still come to the manor, but you are no longer a Tavis. Do not expect motherly affection or fatherly care by us, we expected better from our daughter.

The Owlery was quieter than usual and was filled with the familiar rustling of feathers and the occasional soft hoot echoing through the circular stone room. Diana had come to visit Khione before breakfast and she was carrying a small pouch of owl treats tucked safely into the pocket of her cardigan.
At the sight of her owner, Khione greeted Diana with a gentle chirrup from her perch and accepted a treat before affectionately brushing her snowy white head against Diana's hand. Diana scratched beneath the owl's beak for a moment before she stepped back and had a soft smile on her face.
It was only then that she'd noticed someone else was in the Owlery and they were sitting against the wall. At first Diana thought the girl was only reading a letter until she heard a sob. Her smile faded immediately and she hesitated. Pretending she hadn't notice would've been the easiest thing. But Diana isn't that type of person. Sure she observes people but if they're upset or not in a good mood Diana will try her best to comfort them in ways that she can if they would like her to of course. Diana knew that sometimes people wanted to be left alone. But if it was someone crying, she couldn't bring herself to walk away.
Diana quietly crossed the Owlery careful not to startle the girl after a moment's thought. She stopped a respectful distance away. "Are you alright?" she asked softly. The question felt inadequate the moment it left her mouth. Clearly the answer was no but Diana still asked. "I'm sorry," she added gently. "You don't have to answer if you don't want to." Her muted grey-green eyes briefly settled on the crumpled letter before returning to the girl's face. She deliberately avoided trying to read its contents. Whatever was written there was private. Diana wouldn't like someone else reading her letter. If she wanted someone to read it she'd ask, and Diana had a feeling the girl would want that too.
Instead Diana reached into the pocket of her cardigan and produced a neatly folded handkerchief embroidered with tiny blue forget-me-nots around the edge. "My grandmother always insists I carry one," she said with a small, apologetic smile as she held it out. "She says someone always ends up needing it." She paused for a moment. "You can keep it if you'd like." There was no pressure in her voice but there was only quiet sincerity. "I'm Diana, by the way." She remained where she was instead of sitting beside the girl. Diana decided to give the girl enough space to decide whether she wanted company or to be left alone. Diana had learnt that sometimes simply knowing someone was willing to stay was enough.

Aelis looked at the girl, she didn’t know her. But the girl had a heart kind enough to talk to her… Aelis stared at her for a minute. Weighing if she should be wary or not toward the young girl. She reached for handkerchief and wiped her tears. Thank God, she didn’t put on any makeup today. Knowing someone would look at her maybe she should have. Her eye bags are pretty big these last days, she didn’t sleep well. “Thank you…” she whispered to the girl. “I am Aelis… I apologize we met in these circumstances.”
Aelis noticed that Diana was a Ravenclaw, she couldn’t help but feel a bit of envy. That’s what she should be, not… not a Slytherin, damnit. She wanted to scream. She wanted to throw hands. Everything she knew collapsed before her. But before doing something she will regret, she takes a deep breath. It’s not Diana’s fault, not at all. She folded the letter back where it was. Maybe she will burn it later… “Calm down, you damn pyromaniac.” she thought, she always loved fire. But that’s not what we’re talking about.
She looked at Diana and tried a small smile, it was probably trembling and a bit pitying, but she tried. “Seriously, thank you. It’s good to know not everyone hates me.”

Diana was relieved that the handkerchief had been accepted and she accepted the quiet thanks with a small nod. "It's nice to meet you, Aelis," she said softly. "Even if the circumstances aren't very nice."
Diana's expression immediately softened when Aelis forced a trembling smile while quietly admitting that it was good knowing that not everyone hated her. "I don't hate you," she said gently, the words leaving her without hesitation. "We only just met, but I don't think it's fair to decide something like that without knowing someone."
Before returning her attention to Aelis she briefly glanced toward one of the Owlery windows where a tawny owl had just taken flight. "I don't know what was in your letter," she continued quietly, deliberately making it clear that she wasn't trying to pry. "And you don't have to tell me if you'd rather not." She offered another small, reassuring smile. "But whatever it said it doesn't get to decide how everyone else sees you."
Only the gentle flutter of wings filled the silence between them for only a moment. "My grandmother always tells me that people sometimes say things when they're hurt, frightened, or disappointed." Diana looked thoughtfully at the stone floor before meeting Aelis's eyes again. "That doesn't always make those things true." Diana hesitated as she chose her next words carefully. "I know we don't know each other," she admitted, "but you don't have to sit here by yourself if you don't want to." There was no expectation behind the offer there was only quiet kindness. "If you'd rather have someone nearby for a little while, I don't mind staying." If Aelis declined Diana would give her space and leave the Owlery.
