The moment everything changed with @AngelFyre McCubbin

"No.... No.... No," Simon murmured as he drew out his wand with an incredibly shaking hand, nearly dropping it. She couldn't be gone. She wasn't gone. She wasn't gone! She just......needed him. The future healer in him finally made an arrival to the scene.

"Episkey!" Simon waved his wand in an upward curve across the length of most of her body. Nothing seemed to happen. Still maybe there was a chance. Perhaps there was hope. Simon immediately drew back to check her breathing and then her pulse. He needed just one breath, one heartbeat, one reason to keep believing that he hadn't lost her.

He knew deep within his heart that this was just a minor healing charm to be used for trivial injuries, not like this one. But he still found himself performing it again. Again, and again, and again. Each time he was more determined and more desperate. "Please.....," he whispered, unsure if he was speaking to AngelFyre or with God.

He checked for breathing and a pulse again. Was he wasting time? He really didn't know advanced healing magic yet so he resorted to muggle methods of CPR. He performed it, several rounds but still nothing.

As Simon slowed down he realized the silence around him - not the stillness in that white humming noise but the absolute dead quiet of the night that surrounded him in the forest. Simon touched his chest where the physical mark of his binding mark rested. "AngelFyre, my love? Please talk to me," he said through it. But it was then that his fingertips sensed that it didn't feel the same beneath his fingers. Simon tore open his shirt to see that the area where the binding mark had been was now scarred over. He was unable to think. He was unable to understand. And for the first time, Simon realized he couldn't feel her anymore.

Simon dropped to his knees, needing to pray. He needed to pray harder than he ever had. He needed to pray harder than anyone had ever prayed. He leaned over her, his head in a downward position but it didn't come. He couldn't seem to remember how. His hands were shaking and his breath was uneven. "Father...." he finally found the words but then anything to follow failed to find him and his voice collapsed. There were no words.

Simon opened his eyes to see her lying there on the cold dark forest floor. There were was dirt on her shoulder and a leaf had fallen onto her. She shouldn't be here, she shouldn't be lying on the ground. He needed to get her somewhere more secure, more comfortable. "I've got you," he whispered," as Simon picked her up into his arms and thanks to his dhampir strength effortlessly carried her back to the tent at their campsite. Her body rested motionless against his chest. He carried her back to the campsite and brought her into the tent, carefully placing her down on the blankets and adjusted them around her making sure she was warm and comfortable.

Simon sat there next to her and took her hand into his own in very disbelief at what was happening. It couldn't be. AngelFyre was a seer and she had said they'd be together, that she had heard him ask her to marry him in the love locket he had given her. There were countless times that their "at least twelve children" were brought up in conversation and discussions of where they might live and all the other things that came with a full and happy life. This wasn't happening! Those futures couldn't simply vanish in one night. Their future had been one that they prayed together about - countless times when God allowed them to dream their dreams together.

Don't let her leave. A voice within him seemed to say. Simon wasn't sure what to make of it. He learned to her and kissed her forehead before holding her close to him as he sobbed so violently he could barely breathe.

Her hand was held in his and he was holding it so tightly he was afraid he might hurt her. He pulled back upon realizing it. "Your hand always to my heart," he whispered and looked down to her hand. It didn't move. Not too long ago had it brushed against his chest and rested there but now it was motionless at her side. "Your hand always to my heart, love," and he took her hand and brought it up to his chest for her.

"Remember that? My heart is breaking. I can't do this without you. Stay with me. I can't live in a world where you don't exist."

And then a thought quickly fell and silenced his tears for a moment. He felt something else in all the pain....a possibility - a terrible, impossible, desperate possibility.

Protect her. Simon had stepped between her and the knife to try and protect her that night and now the only enemy keeping her from a fulfilling life was death. Simon just so happened to have a remedy against that - at least temporarily. There was one remedy he knew that would offer one chance.

"Please forgive me if I can't let you go. We still have more time together. We have to. You've seen it. I refuse to believe this is where our story ends."

And Simon brushed aside her long hair to one side so her neck was visible. The color had drained so much from her but she still was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen, even in this moment. She was still AngelFyre. She was the most beautiful person he had ever known. His fingertips trailed against her skin, quivering as he did so. He wasn't sure how to do this and wasn't sure if he would do it correctly but he needed to try.

His hands trembled and he wasn't certain if this would work but he knew with absolute clarity that he could not simply let her go. He sunk his teeth down slowly into her neck, piercing the skin and causing the blood to trickle down her neck and into his mouth.

Simon pulled back and when he did so he stayed frozen. Watching. Waiting. "I'm here," he whispered. "I'm still here." If there was even the smallest chance that she could hear him, the smallest chance that some part of her was still fighting her way back, he needed her to know she wasn't alone.

Nothing happened. There was no sign. There was no miracle. There was no sudden breathing. What if this didn't work?

Simon slipped his hand down to take hold of hers again. What if this didn't work, he thought again? And then another voice inside of him hit.

Let her go be with God.

Oh, God....what if it did work?

If AngelFyre had been somewhere else, somewhere peaceful, somewhere beautiful, somewhere she belonged. If so, what had he done? He had spent this time in the back of his mind begging God not to take her but what if God had already welcomed her home? What if she hadn't been lost and he had just pulled her away?

It began to set in as he heard a sound come from outside a tent. It was a bark. Hillary. She had returned from whatever adventure had pulled her away, unaware that the world had changed while she was gone.

Another bark.

Simon closed his eyes. He couldn't let Hillary find AngelFyre like this. He couldn't the dog who loved AngelFyre so completely see her lying there and not understand why she wouldn't wake up to greet her?

"Hillary, girl," he said following a third bark that was now closer. She trotted into the tent. "Hillary...." the name came out in a sob.

The realization hit him. Simon would have to live in a world without AngelFyre. Hillary would have to live in a world without AngelFyre. Her parents, her friends, her classmates. Everyone who had every heard her laugh, felt her kindness, or been changed by the way she loved them. All of them would have to wake up tomorrow in a world where AngelFyre McCubbin no longer existed. That thought was simply unbearable. His fingers tightened around AngelFyre's hand as though he could still keep her anchored to this world and with his other arm he reached for Hillary, pulling her close against him.

Be kind to one another. (*iNPC is Miles Thatcher)
