--- ------Summer was a time of boring fun. The heat and humidity was one part of it. For the last couple of weeks Guinevere had been in Asia, she was entirely sure she had not seen a single cloud in the sky to shield her unfortunate warm-blooded species from the vicious sun. Her mother, Hana, was an avid enjoyer of outdoors adventures and liked to bring the unsuspecting siblings out on walks and hikes, herself seemingly never feeling the heat. If only Guinevere could take out her wand and cast glacius on herself, or even ventus, even if the wind buffeted her onto the frying-pan-hot ground. Small handheld fans became one of their staples: a muggle device to propel wind at the holder. Guinevere was in awe of how muggles constantly were coming up with new gadgets to make their lives easier. The only thing bringing her amusement was seeing Will take the temperature even worse than she was: he would grimace and grumble every time a slice of sunlight hit his reddening skin - his wish for a golden tan was not granted by the sun gods, or rather the gene gods - and constantly requested to sit in the shade and guzzle down a bottle of water.
---The second part was how often Hana arranged things to do. It was her homecoming to the muggle world, and she intended to make every second of it worth, especially without her husband complaining about the lack of magic. Stranger yet, these things were all activities Guinevere liked too, but in this heat she simply could not find the strength to fully enjoy it. However, it was certainly a relief whenever they entered any air-conditioned space, one of which was the Songs’ manor in Gangneung. It was a nice waterside place, though its proximity to muggle society forced Guinevere and Will to quickly switch their vernacular to something more muggle-y.
---It was an oppressively hot day- a “dog-day,” as she learned they were referred to. It was an allusion to how dogs stuck out their big purple tongues on days like these, and up till now Guinevere was not very familiar with the canine species. The siblings were quite honestly doing nothing- lazing around, as these days brought out the sloth in everyone- when Hana burst through the doors with significant energy to announce that they had a spontaneous change of plans. “Get up,” she said without bothering to soften the blow of the prospect of an otherwise mellow day gone, and then asked if they remembered a Clara Sato. Without waiting for a response, though both teenagers gave shakes of their head, she plowed on. “Oh, well. She’s my high school friend, and her daughter is a witch too. Turns out you guys are pretty common, huh? Anyways. Her and I are catching up, and you two are coming too, since you’re being so lazy.” She frowned disapprovingly at the cluster of plastic wrappers and snack crumbs around Will’s feet, then at Guinevere’s bad sitting posture, and finally at the phones they were both enraptured in. Summer was their homecoming to cellular devices, and they too intended to make every second of it worth. Her mother turned and left, with a final “Be ready in about ten minutes, and dress nice for once!
---Guinevere believed this was an unnecessary statement, as she usually was quite well put together. Her outfit of choice was an army green top and gray shorts. After joining the snake house, it seemed that green became her most-used color, and clearly Will had similar tendencies, as he emerged with a green tee and jean shorts. “Viv, you copied me,” he said, rolling his eyes. Guinevere ignored this comment and headed for the door. Despite not being allowed any magic herself, she had enchanted her shoulder bag ahead of time, at Hogwarts, so that it could contain more. She wasn’t actually sure if this was allowed either, but she assumed that muggles would be none the wiser.
---Hana drove them to a section of the beach, where a nice, upscale restaurant sat facing the water. They were ahead of time, obviously; Hana loved to be early. A bored server led them to their table, where upon being sat Guinevere and Will immediately went back on their phones.

Korea was nice. And hot. Very hot. Like Hainan China that were were just in. Switzerland never got this hot in summer but we can’t compare that. I had gotten a tan. And you know what? I was quite used to not whipping my wand out for everything and managed to stay cool in muggle ways. Collette was holding up fine against the heat. Not whining much. Our hotel was air conditioned so we spent the hotter days there or at the beach.
Except for today. I was up at 6am before anyone was awake, just to read up on some of my school subjects. Then at around 7am my mom opened the curtains. ”Today, we’re meeting my friend from High School! Her name is Hana Song.” She said in an overly cheery voice. Especially for 7am. ”Olivia...You do know her daughter’s a witch too.” I jumped up from my book. ”Mom you’re not supposed to tell-” I said before flopping back into my chair with my book. I knew the lunch was at noon. My mom mentioned it yesterday. I suppose we were up earlier because i’ve got a sister aged 10 who's sometimes quite difficult. ”Dress nice we’re going to a nice restaurant.” She declared. Eyeing Collette who was already at her suitcase choosing something relatively nice. At eight we ate breakfast and at 9 we were getting ready. I chose a pink flowy flowery dress with white heels. I just did my hair in waves. Honestly we didn't look like a clownfest so that was a plus.
We then arrived at a fancy restaurant overlooking the ocean, my mom went in first. My dad looked at the both of us. ”Girls, today is a day for your mother, don't mess it up. I’ll take you to ice cream later ok?” He said with a smile. I smiled and nodded. ”We’re going to be the best people on the planet!” She said then skipped in.
Once we got to the table, my mother and Hana were already deep in conversation. And Hana’s children were on their phones. It was kinda rude but to be fair, technology didn't work in the wizarding world so... I took out my phone and tapped on it with my nails.
”Olivia! Introduce yourself.” My mom said. I was already involuntarily placed next to new people, why was I being forced to talk to them. I mean the girl seemed nice but she was definitely older than me. ”Um...Hi my name’s Olivia...” I mumbled barely loud enough to hear but loud enough for her to hear. I started tapping on my phone case again.

THEY SAY IT'S HAPPY HERE, HAPPINESS IS FIGUATIVE

---It was funny how muggles (she says as a half-blood) could come up with such bizarre things without having magic. Or perhaps it was precisely this lack of magic that forced to create things so un-funny it was ironically funny. Guinevere was knee-deep in the muddy waters of a thing called "Insertgram Real" when a chair was pulled out next to her with a faint squeak of wood upon wood, and a brunette sat down. She was young- much younger than Guinevere, that was for sure, and for a supposed witch, she had never seen her at Hogwarts before.
---She was about to pry, but glanced over to notice that this girl had seemed similarly preoccupied with her phone. Guinevere then noticed that Hana had immediately stood up to greet Clara and was in animated conversation. Will, obviously, was playing crosswords. So much for an intellectual, freshly graduated from Hogwarts.
---Subtly, she placed the glowing rectangle face-down on the table to look around. Outside the window, the sun had just began to follow its downward trajectory into the ocean, filling the upper part of the sky with a pleasant gray-blue and the lower with gold. Waves crashed softly onto the sandy beach, and despite being inside, Guinevere could feel the warmth of the late afternoon. From her seat, she could only hear the enthusiastic chatter of her mother and her friend, but it was not hard to conjure up the sound of seagulls going KWA KWA KWA incessantly up

and down the beach. Guinevere wondered if it would be nice to be a seagull. It was about that time when her fellow classmates started learning the art of Animagi, and for a moment she had considered joining in too; bandwagon fallacy was one of the hardest ethical weak points to beat. She was easily deterred by the lengthiness and volatility of the whole process. But evidently that train of thought was meant for another day, as Hana and Clara's conversation diverged towards their children. She heard Clara nudge her daughter to introduce herself, and Hana gave her rat daughter a glare to say, Minji-ssi, stop contemplating, because philosophers don't make money, and talk to the girl.
---"Good to meet you," she responded levelly whilst smiling. "I'm Guinevere." She glanced at her rat brother, seeing that he was not keen on responding, and did not press further. "What year of school are you entering?" There; that was a good starting question to ask. It was a classic, one she'd asked many times, and would help her narrow down if she'd seen this girl before.
---Olivia's nails sounded a light tak tak tak sound on her phone case. Guinevere glanced down at her own nails, suddenly reminded that it would do her well to seek out a salon and get them done. At Hogwarts, for herself at least, aesthetics often were put aside for most, due to the excessive amount of hands-on work, but summer was a time to let loose.
