Saturday Evening

The evening sky was clear and there was a slight breeze. The perfect weather for an evening party in the courtyard. Perfect for Rain’s birthday party.

Rain hadn’t quite celebrated his birthday on the day of as his mother had an emergency that took her away from home so he ended up getting his school supplies with his father and getting some ice cream afterwards. He didn’t mind as he knew his parents would still have a better celebration once his mother was back.

This was a special birthday as it was Rain’s 11th and he would be going to Hogwarts soon. An exciting if not completely nerve wracking concept. Because of this Rain’s parents wanted to make this a birthday to remember.

Rain was a big fan of the stars and the different mythos associated with them. His parents made sure there would be no clouds to obscure the view of the stars while they had their celebration outside. They also had their elves decorate the courtyard with floating lanterns and Rain’s favorite constellations.


Once the courtyard was finished being decorated Rain’s parents went to go bring him out.

Rain heard a knock on his door interrupting his reading. He yelled out, “Who is it?”

His mother’s voice responded back, “It’s me and your father, darling. We have a surprise for you, may we come in?”

“Sure. I was just reading,” he said back. I wonder what the surprise could be? They didn’t seem like they were planning anything.

His parents opened the door with smiles on their faces. Whatever they had planned for him they seemed quite excited.

Then his father spoke, “Come. The surprise is in the courtyard. Your brother and sister are already there with the nannies”.

Rain nodded and placed his bookmark in his book to make his place then got up to follow his parents down. They walked out of the room and down the steps of his wing of the manor and through the back door heading to the courtyard.

Once they reached the courtyard Rain couldn’t help but gasp. It’s beautiful. Rain looked around with wonder. At the colorful lanterns and the magically conjured constellations, all of them his favorites. That’s when he spotted the table where his siblings were sitting. The table was full of all his favorite foods. Jambalaya, Wellington, even Freshwater Plimpies, something not many would eat but something Rain really enjoyed. And the sweets: Peppermint Toads, Exploding Bon-bons, and Cauldron Cakes.

He turned back to his parents and threw his arms, as much as he could, around them. “Thank you so much! I love it. All my favorite foods and the decorations are amazing. When did you plan all this?”

His father chuckled while in the hug, “Your ma and I had the plans made for earlier but because of the emergency it got pushed back but it worked out. And after we eat there’s another activity you’ll like”.

With that Rain pulled away and went to sit at the table. He couldn’t wait to eat and see the other surprise.

~Some Time Later~

Rain was stuffed. The food was delicious and he was having a great time hanging out with his family. The rest of his family was just finishing up eating too. That’s when his mother got up and went back through the door to go inside.

“Where’s Mama going”, he questioned his father.

“She just went to get the things for your surprise. This was a lot of her own planning”, his father explained.

Soon his mother came back and was carrying a wooden cart behind her. “This is filled with a bunch of magical fireworks. They’re set to show all of your favorite magical creatures. I know I don’t typically like to set off fireworks but we don’t have any creatures in sanctuary right now so I figured it wouldn’t hurt anyone to set them off”, Rain’s mother explained.

“Oh, Mama, thank you!” Rain got up from his seat and ran to give his mother a hug.

His mother explained that he could set the first one off but after that one of the house elves would set the rest off. The one Rain picked was an electric blue and yellow striped rocket. Once it was set off it flew into the sky. The resulting firework was a Thunderbird that soared through the sky. How amazing! Rain could only look on in awe. This was an amazing surprise.

The rest of the party was spent watching the fireworks. All Rain could think was appreciation for his parents and how amazing of a celebration they put on for his birthday. The best he’s ever had.
