It was too early in the morning. Jennifer pushed her hands deep into the front pockets of her hoodie and slouched along one of the winding paths in Central Park. The morning sun had just risen in the sky over Manhattan, casting golden streaks of sunlight that filtered down through the trees. It was a beautiful day if you didn't happen to be Jennifer Lin-Wang, who was definitely in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"I can't believe I actually agreed to do this," she muttered under her breath, nudging a pebble off the path with her foot. She sighed dramatically.
"Six in the morning on a Saturday," she continued, looking up and around at the bustling park.
Runners dashed up and down the sidewalks, dogs and their owners happily walked by, and riders swerved past on their bikes as if they had somewhere important to be. Jennifer glanced up at them with the expression of someone who had just seen something utterly bizarre.
"Whoever thought that getting up early and working out was a good idea," she mused aloud.
Of course, this was all her mother's fault.
It all started half an hour ago, when her room curtains had suddenly been yanked open by someone determined to wake her up.
"Jennifer. Up!" "It's six in the morning," she groaned into her pillows. "Exactly." "Mom, it's a Saturday!" "Normal kids like you should go out." "Normal kids don't wake up at six in the morning." "You are going to Central Park. Get some fresh air." "I have been!" Jennifer nearly shouted, peeking out from under her blankets. "Going outside to the mailbox counts as getting fresh air!" Her mother just raised her eyebrows in response. "One hour." "Mom, it's New York! The air isn't exactly 'fresh' here," she tried once more. Her mother gave a short laugh. "Go then." Jennifer didn't budge.
And now here she was, traipsing around Central Park and having to stifle groans of disappointment. The trees were nice, and the birds were pretty, and the city wasn't quite so busy yet. "I love this," Jennifer said sarcastically under her breath, purposely sticking her legs out to trip a squirrel. It yapped at her reproachfully and scampered up an oak tree. "This is so much better than sleeping in."
"I still blame my mother," she muttered to herself after a moment's pause.

Despite the early time period, Devon was glad to see the sun already in full bloom. She absolutely loved the summertime, when the days were long and bright. The sun would rise in the morning nice and early, and set in the evening late in the day. It was absolute and pure bliss for the young teenage girl, as she felt full of vibrant energy when her green eyes locked on the light.
As it was such a beautiful day, Devon knew she had to take advantage of it. She was already plenty wide awake, and frankly, already filled with energy. This was to be the start of another exciting day. At least, she hoped it would be exciting. Then again, part of making it happen was believing it would. And Ms. Wallen was definitely an optimist.
Although she was a teenager, ah the wonderful benefit of being fourteen, Devon still checked in with her family before departing. Er, that was not entirely accurate. She notified her parents, who were getting ready for their jobs. As for her two older brothers and older sister, she simply sent them a text message. Even though she enjoyed being awake during these early mornings, she tried to be respectful with her family and not cause them to have to wake up. Or at least make as little noise as possible. It wouldn’t be right, in her opinion, to wake up everyone just because she wanted to go outside. She liked to think that she did a decent job of thinking about others. Well, decent enough for a teenage girl during the summer.
The young Horned Serpent stepped off the subway and beamed as she gracefully glided to the street above. As noisy and crowded as the streets could be, Devon enjoyed the hustle and bustle (and she enjoyed the fact that there always seemed to be some type of activity happening, no matter the time. Shhhh, don’t tell her family that she knew of that fact). It certainly helped that she visited Central Park a lot, and lived in an apartment complex not that far away.
So far, the morning wasn’t too busy … yet. But that morning rush would certainly come.
As she entered the park, Devon began to quietly hum. It was a song she played just last night on her violin, American Pie. Her walk was graceful, as she slinked around. A smile crossed her lips, as she saw a girl close to her age nearby. And perhaps familar? Maybe this girl also went to Ilvermorny? Ah, but that wasn’t a question she was going to shout in public around no-majs. For now, before she moved closer, she’d observe.
